So even if you're a senior in your field with multiple experience, your averaga gpa from 10 years ago can still be used against you?

A résumé is usually 2 pages, but it is written by the candidate. Potential employers can get sceptical of it as many jobseekers fake their résumés.

So, high CGPA shown in academic transcripts + other certs may help to secure the job immediately. I always showed them to my potential employers, and I had worked for as many as 11 companies (3 full-time, the rest were part-time and freelance projects from companies), before I quit employment and set up my own biz.

Even for my biz, when I meet potential clients, I show them my credentials, like my biz is legit, this is my background etc. All these documents (certification by 3rd parties) build trust very fast.

This is a very malaysian thing. From what I've heard from my friends working in countries like the UK or Canada, companies don't give a shit about what grades you got like 10 years ago when you already have 10 years experience as a professional.
Its like universities expecting to see your primary school results when you apply for universities.

Another stupid thing about malaysian job application is expecting to see your picture in the resume. In western countries, you are in fact discouraged from doing this.

I beg to differ. I have worked in the US before and GPA matters even for your 2nd or 3rd job. My friends are working in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and GPA is still a determinant if the position you are applying for is competitive. People go to universities to get their degrees ain't for nothing

i got 2.34 cgpa and i get called up and offered by carigali twice after 7yrs working. i am a chinese

i can see if they see how relevant u are to the position u applying and how much u can offer to the company. Ur uni grade is the last thing they see if ur experience already like 10yrs, and they just want to confirm u are actually a legit holder of the degree cert.

If u can perform urself for interview, they will no see ur rubbish paper cert.

unless a few candidates and all can perform at interview, all show same enthusiast, same exp level, same location, everything same, but 1 is 1st class 1 is 2nd class, then they see result. they do also see if u are single or married, and they see the base location is near to your hometown or not or near to where u currently residing. Alot factors, but cgpa wont weight much after u 10yrs exp compare to other factors.

heck, in malaysia even working in sarawak and sabah also they see u are sabahan or sarawakian more important than ur experience lol.

I would say depend on your field and which company are you applying for.
Most of the MNC doesn't care, but local company would even want your SPM certificate.

No, it doesn't. I've worked in the US and in Europe, and the employers cared more about any possible tax evasion, terrorism or industrial espionage links than my lousy CGPA.

The only company in Malaysia I've come across that insisted on CGPA was Hilti, and apparently it was such a shitty workplace with high turnover that even headhunters complained about it.

Generally prospect’s CGPA is no longer relevant to companies wanting to hire experienced ppl over 10 years.

Thats quite encouraging to hear. My gpa very average (3.0 ngam), So I worry a bit. But theres also another poster that said in Malaysia, companies DO care about cgpa past the first job. So I guess the final answer is that it really depends on the country you're in.

i wonder shy companies in this country love to ask for academic certificate even though that person have more than 10 years experience. If i am the owner, i will focus more on skills & experiences

If you don't have enough experience, certs and grades kinda matter. It's also used often to filter what companies think are "better" candidates from the normal ones for entry-level/junior positions where years of experience is not a priority.

In most cases, HR are the ones that want to see them. It's part of the SOP to vet candidates. The truth is most hiring managers don't really care that much about grades for mid level positions and above.

For entry-level jobs yes. Its because that is the only fact that the HR can check. The rest you can bs in interview.

For managerial level jobs, grade matters less as HR got more info to draw from such as your working experience and track record. How you sell yourself in interview is more important.

For senior management level, grade becomes insignificant as Headhunters will look for you based on your track record/ referrals/ endorsements/ awards. Some take up a professional qualification or two to bolster their core skills.

For board of director/ CEO level, grade is negligible as most that reached this position can easily apply for Executive education or EMBA from ivy leagues. They can easily pay and the course normally runs for 1 year or lesser. Education part settled.

This is summarised nicely btw. But if you wanna know, i got a mediocre second class grade in my uni but what matters is the experience you have that complements your in-campus learning experience. So grade is not the only assessment criteria. This is only applicable to MNC, overseas firms though, local firms may place heavier emphasis on your grades in comparison

simply put, it is one of the variables that may be considered. it's importance varies from company to company and seniority of the position

generally speaking, grades becomes less important as the ladder gets higher, with experience and achievements taking center stage

From my observation and experience, where you graduate from still trumps the grade. Especially Malaysia companies that are quite drawn to "made in UK/US" branding.

Remember an interview is also the time for you to find out more about the company. One of the things I cannot stand is for a company (and the employees) to blindly follow policies that don't make sense, in this case requiring CGPA for candidates that are far past their graduation date.

If they're not flexible enough with these types of policies, how flexible would they be with other policies eg. package negotiations or when you're asking for a raise or promotion?

Good luck in your job search.
