dunno what is MQA.

but your A5 should be able to play flac, wma, bdmv, m2ts, mkv and other hires video and audio files.

no need DAC, just hdmi->AVR->TV.

Thanks

I have a Hi Media A5. I would like to use it to listen to MQA and hi res files someday. All I have to do is to buy a DAC that supports these files, is it?

dont think himedia support mqa. very limited china product which support mqa.. what is your audio setup? If you serious about mqa you can buy an audio player/network streamer/dac that supports MQA and connect it to your existing audio setup.

I thought of getting a DAC that supports MQA to hook to the Hi Media box. Do you think the Hi Media + DAC ( a budget one, probably around RM500 to 600) can sound as good as an entry level CDP? My amp is Orelle SA100 integrated and speakers are Sony S-SA5 La Voce.

maybe yes maybe no.. CDP work on a constant bit rate 16 bits 44.1khz or 24 bits 44.1khz.. while android they alter the bitrate. If you are perfectionist this is something you would care about...
the other point is i dont recall HiMedia support digital out except on HDMI but i think ur HDMI should have hook to TV or AVR. If your HiMedia cannot give u digital out then your DAC will be least meaningful.

HiMedia is a budget but decent media player.. The hardware itself was strong compare to the other tv box out there with its stability. But with the price they are asking, they cannot give you hifi grade component.. you can look for another brand like https://www.zidoo.tv/Product/index/model/UH...FMcQ%3D%3D.html
They offer decent audio processing chip which support DSD and MQA. This will remove the need to have DAC bought separately.

The Hi Media box has an optical out and 2 RCA out (L&R). I don't want to spend so much money on this set up. I would like to enjoy some of the 70s and 80s songs which I have downloaded from internet in FLAC. I tried hooking up my laptop to the integrated amp and the sound quality is like $hit. So I was thinking if a budget DAC would help, at least it could get close to an entry level CDP sound quality. At the moment I am listening to the digital audio files on Hi Media via an Edifier 2,1 speakers.

Q10 pro has been around for >6 years.

it is still excellent mainly for playback as its video and audio capabilities are very good.

online streaming, unifiplaytv works fine; however aztrogo does not anymore.

chinese/asian vod, RSS player with icdrama is working good as usual.

p2p also work very well if u have an HDD inside.

other illegit apps, paid or free... can't tell u as i have given up on them.

it's a pity himedia appears not much in the biz anymore, w/o good successors after q10pro.

there is Q30 and Q100 but are not better than q10pro.

meanwhile, most other android boxes continue to focus on netflix hd, netflix 4k which is of no use to those who already have TVs with that app.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I am still using it for MKV playback and also RSS streaming.

But couldn't find any other streaming TV/movies channel.

there is one preloaded mediabox app but not all content are viewable.. need to be VIP to streaming latest movies

paid ones, u can get.

free ones - all unreliable la... u get frustrated in the end, no use... i've been there. biggrin.gif

ahem paid ones - gudluk, i will not get into them.

after a decade, i come to use boxes only for astrogo, unifiplaytv, youtube, certain asian websites - more than enuf for online streaming.

vod - playback, p2p - great video, great audio.

no need anything else. devil.gif

q10pro is a fabulous box all around - my all time fav. laugh.gif

just a pity there is no successor...
