Totti ends 2007 on a high
Saturday 22 December, 2007

Francesco Totti saw out 2007 with his 160th Serie A goal and believes Roma will push Inter all the way for the Scudetto.

"I wanted to close 2007 in the best possible way," he said after a cheekily chipped penalty and late tap-in for the 2-0 win over Sampdoria.

"I am happy and thank my teammates, who let me take the spot-kick and provided such a wonderful assist at the end."

Il Capitano is increasingly the top Serie A marksman still in activity, as Alessandro Del Piero lags well behind on 141.

However, he had not scored in the League since October 20, having suffered a persistent ankle injury.

"It weighed heavy on my shoulders to be out for two months, especially as I and the team were going through a fantastic period of form," continued Totti.

"I still have a little pain, but I cannot leave the side alone at this time. For 2008 I would like to maintain this consistency and perhaps win a bit more."

The Giallorossi will face Real Madrid in the Champions League and if Inter lose to Milan on Sunday, will be just four points adrift of the Serie A leaders.

"There is a long way to go yet and it won't be like last season, when there was a 20-point gap. We will push them all the way to the end."

Totti to renew Roma vows
Wednesday 2 January, 2008

Whispers in Italy are suggesting that Roma will soon extend the contract of captain Francesco Totti.

The former Italian international is presently committed to the Giallorossi until June 2010, but reports today suggest that he'll renew that agreement for a further two more years.

Totti has been a one-club man since he graduated through his beloved club's youth system as a boy and he made his debut for the first-team as a 16-year-old.

Born and bred in the capital, Totti has always resisted the temptation to leave the outfit after Milan and Real Madrid had offers rejected for him.

The No 10, born in September 1976, is now likely to end his career with the Giallorossi before perhaps being given some sort of role at the club.

Meanwhile, Giallorossi scouts are on a German hunting mission with a view to signing a variety of players.

Speculation suggests that a new left-back is wanted with Hertha Berlin's Gilberto and Ludovic Magnin of Stuttgart both options.

Rome Sweet Home for AA
Wednesday 2 January, 2008

Alberto Aquilani is not interested in leaving hometown club Roma, his representative has commented.

The Azzurri international is widely regarded as the future of Italian football and a host of Europe's top clubs have been associated with a swoop.

But Franco Zavaglia has today assured Giallorossi fans that the capital-born starlet only has eyes for the Giallorossi.

"Aquilani has made it clear on a number of occasions already - he wants to stay at Roma," Zavaglia noted.

"Alberto, along with Daniele De Rossi, represents the future of the club for the next decade."

Inter were heavily linked with a bid for the former Under-21 international before Christmas, but the agent insists that leaving Rome is not on the player's agenda.

"The player's own desire and how much the club want to invest in him is what will determine his future," Zavaglia continued.

"The fact that the Roman public love him will not matter when we go and discuss his contract, it just depends on what both parties want.

"It's clear that Alberto is liked by European and Italian clubs, but the Inter rumours seem journalistic. I'm not aware of any Inter offer.

"Aquilani's contract expires in 2010 and there is no rush or an appointment for talks. We'll just wait for Roma to make their move as we have great faith in them."

Aquilani, who rejected Chelsea as a teen, is now hoping to regain his top form in a bid to make Italy's Euro 2008 squad

Curci demands main gloves
Sunday 6 January, 2008

Roma reserve goalkeeper Gianluca Curci has warned he won't accept another season on the sidelines.

"We know full well what Gianluca's rights and duties are," agent Beppe Bonetto told Romanews.

"The player was kept here, fully aware of his quality, because Alexander Doni (pictured) had to settle in to Serie A. That has now happened and, besides Gianluigi Buffon, he is one of the best goalkeepers in Italy."

With this in mind - and Doni's solid fitness record - Curci has barely had a look-in over the past couple of campaigns.

"Let us not forget that at this moment in time Curci is the third choice goalkeeper for Roberto Donadoni's Italy squad, so he is held in some high regard.

"We have no intention of forcing Roma's hand in this matter, as they have to deal with it in the best way, but I think we can discuss a loan as being of mutual benefit to all concerned."

Sampdoria are one of the options for Curci, although Milan are also on the look-out for a new goalkeeper following Nelson Dida's series of howlers.

"The destination is something Roma must think about, but it is clear to say that the position of reserve for Doni is a tight fit for Curci."

Spalletti ready for 2008 tests
Sunday 6 January, 2008

Luciano Spalletti is raring to go as 2008 brings Roma challenges from Inter, Juventus, Milan and Real Madrid.

"Our New Year's resolution is to give more joy to our great President Franco Sensi and the fans, who we saw in 2007 celebrating when we brought home the Coppa Italia," said the Coach on Sky Sport Italia.

"I would also like to keep improving my squad, eliminating some of our little foibles. It will be important to take full points even when we don't play the champagne football that has made us famous."

This has been a real problem, as many of the seven points that separate Roma from leaders Inter were lost against smaller clubs where results have to be ground out.

"Inter have proved they are very tough and mature. The players have developed a team mentality that carries on regardless of who is in the line-up," continued Spalletti.

"Juventus will be in the Champions League again next season, as they have players of quality who are ready for a fight and that can make the difference.

"I think Milan will also finish in the top four. They have had problems in Serie A up until now and been quite unlucky, but they play great football and at the end of the day will have enough points to be in the important spots."

Roma had perhaps the toughest draw of all the Italian sides in the Champions League, as they must face Real Madrid in February's second round.

"It will be an even game," assured Spalletti. "Roma's characteristics are capable of stopping any opponent. Real know how to play with quality, but Bernd Schuster has also given them balance and substance. Today Real are a complete squad."

Spalletti denies Mancini exit
Monday 7 January, 2008

Roma boss Luciano Spalletti is insistent that Brazilian wizard Amantino Mancini doesn't have to leave the Stadio Olimpico.

The talented forward is known to be unsettled in the Eternal City and has been frustrated by the Giallorossi's recent contract offers.

Lyon have had their advances rejected on several occasions and Liverpool are believed to be keeping an eye on Mancini, but Spalletti doesn't expect the former Venezia man to quit the club.

"It shouldn't be taken for granted that Mancini will leave," the Tuscan boss maintained.

"I have never listened to the rumours that Mancini will leave. It's much more likely that he will stay and that is our main hope.

"He is a great player and he is still improving. He has such promise and he could be so useful to any team."

Mancini's uncertainty over his future has caused a breakdown in his relationship with the Roma faithful and has seen him jeered on several occasions.

"His relationship with the fans may have deteriorated and he isn't happy because he is a sensitive lad," Spalletti admitted.

"Anything can happen in the market. While you can advise a player who isn't playing to find a new club, nobody should be forced to sell. Transfers are possible, but we are calm.

"I am not expecting reinforcements. I have a really good squad and they have proved themselves this season in their results and their performances."

erm i got it from Weston in Peninsula Shopping Center, near Funan.

well well well, transfer window is now open, as usual, rumours are coming up now. but surely this 1 takes the cake :

"SGE is widely reported that ready to splash out 16mil pound for Mancini, n might include Bianchi in the deal."

holy shit this is a really tempting offer. we're having some problem renewing his expiring contract, n he wasn't really play up to his standard recently... 16mil + Bianchi for him ? hell yeah.

if we really got Bianchi, we can play our game in a different approach... of coz, that depend on Spalletti wanna try out 2 strikers system or not...

Totti plans European glory
Tuesday 8 January, 2008

Roma captain Francesco Totti isn't daunted by facing Real Madrid in the Champions League and is already planning next year's tournament.

Giallorossi fans breathed a collective gasp when their side were sent to the Bernabeu to face the conquerors of city rivals Lazio.

While Spanish champions Real represent a stiff test for the Eternal City outfit, Totti seems far from intimidated.

"I'm happy that we are facing them," Er Pupone insisted in an interview with France Football.

"I have good memories of playing against Real, like the victory at the Bernabeu in 2002. They are a very strong side, but I'm sure that we will show our ability.

"We have a side of champions and we have the right mentality and concentration, but we need to be nearly perfect to win games like this and take trophies."

While Totti is clearly focused on this season's competition, he can't help but look forward to next year when the final will be held at his beloved Stadio Olimpico.

"When I heard that the Olimpico was going to host the Final next year I immediately said that I wanted to be in it," he explained.

"I want it to be Roma against Liverpool so that we could get revenge for 1984 when we lost on penalties.

"You can say that it's not certain, but it's destiny. You wait and see," he forecast confidently.
