Sven: I want Mancini now!
Wednesday 9 January, 2008

Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson is determined to sign Roma forward Amantino Mancini as soon as possible.

The Brazilian winger has been a key figure for the Giallorossi in recent seasons with 123 appearances since joining from Venezia in 2003.

However, the Ipatinga native - who turned 28 yesterday - is unlikely to extend his contract in the Eternal City, which expires in 2009.

"I want Mancini here immediately as he is the ideal man to strengthen my squad," Eriksson told Il Romanista. "He could become my Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Money isn't a problem for us, but it depends on whether Roma want to sell him.

"I know that contract talks have hit a brick wall, but we will have to talk to his agent Gilmar Veloz."

Reports suggest that Eriksson may have to wait until June to land his man as Roma chief Rosella Sensi is unwilling to give up on a player she rates highly.

Aquilani returns for Roma
Friday 11 January, 2008

Midfield starlet Alberto Aquilani is back in action for Roma and he wants to make an impact for the second-placed side.

Aquilani made a superb start to the campaign, but he limped off in the Giallorossi's October 2 Champions League defeat against Manchester United.

The 23-year-old's thigh injury has seen him sidelined for over three months, but he has finally returned to training and is ready to help the capital club try and claw back Inter's seven-point advantage at the top of the table.

"We must play our own campaign and not get down on ourselves," Aquilani explained to Il Romanista.

"Of course I know that it will be more difficult to catch Inter than it will be to keep ahead of Juventus. But I think that we should at least secure second place
.

"Perhaps Inter have lots of injuries, but they also have a really deep squad.

"I think that Inter have something more than the other sides - they have a close-knit squad, a great Coach and super players

"We are behind and we can only hope for them to slip up. Inter don't falter lightly but we have had blips."

Aquilani concluded by commenting on his personal ambitions for the coming year and the possibility of representing Italy at Euro 2008 or the Olympics in China.

"The Olympics are a huge experience because they give you the chance to learn a type of discipline outside football," he stated.

"As for Totti, Francesco has already said no to Roberto Donadoni and I think it's right that he doesn't go to Beijing either.

"I'm hoping to play as much as possible to convince Donadoni to take me to Euro 2008."

Spalletti looks to Totti
Saturday 12 January, 2008

Francesco Totti is "100 per cent fit" and ready to face Atalanta on Sunday, assures Roma boss Luciano Spalletti.

The captain has barely featured since spraining his ankle during a Champions League game against Sporting Lisbon in October.

"Totti is 100 per cent fit, even if the ankle still gives him a little pain every now and then," explained the Coach.

"Alberto Aquilani is also better, although he has some doubts and will need to be convinced of his full recovery by playing a real game. It is pleasing to have so many players back in the squad, as people like Rodrigo Taddei are important for our balance."

The Giallorossi need their stars in top shape if they are to defeat Atalanta this weekend and close the seven-point gap on Serie A leaders Inter.

"If we want to have ambition then we cannot just say we're going to catch Inter, we have to win the matches on the field," continued Spalletti.

"Inter have not really changed since last season, even if I am convinced they won't be able to break records again like they did in 2007. We need to put in great performances to take points off them."

Roma have traditionally struggled at the Stadio Azzurri d'Italia and face their former Coach Luigi Del Neri.

"Atalanta are an aggressive side who put a lot of pressure on opponents. If we don't prove our quality, then we could run into a lot of problems. If we lose more ground on Inter, then clearly it'll be even tougher to recover."

Manchester City transfer target Amantino Mancini is expected to start alongside Taddei and Simone Perrotta despite admitting this week that his contract renewal talks with the club are not going well.

"I spoke to Mancini and he told me he wants to stay. We have mutual respect for each other and I believe him. I saw him training well this week and the lad has an excellent rapport with the club. As for our transfer plans, if we need reinforcements then we will get them."

Roma squad: Antunes, Aquilani, Brighi, Cicinho, Curci, De Rossi, Doni, Esposito, Ferrari, Juan, Julio Sergio, Mancini, Mexes, Panucci, Perrotta, Pit, Pizarro, Taddei, Tonetto, Totti.

Totti turns down Olympics berth
Saturday 12 January, 2008

Francesco Totti has said it would "not be right" if he accepted an invitation to play for the Italian Olympic squad after his international retirement.

Although the Roma star has retired from the Azzurri scene, he could be one of three over-age players invited to join Pierluigi Casiraghi's Under-21 side in Beijing.

"I don't want to go to Beijing," Totti told the TG1 news programme.

"The Olympic side and the Nazionale are the same thing and if I'm not going to Euro 2008 it wouldn't be right to go to the Olympics."

Casiraghi had said he would be interested in calling up several world class over-age players, including Luca Toni.

Meanwhile, Totti commented on the news that his former Roma boss Fabio Capello has taken on the England job.

"He was a great player and a great Coach, he will continue to be great with England as well. Wherever he has gone, he has always won."

The Roma captain has spent his entire career in a Giallorossi jersey and aims to complete that era.

"My contract expires in two years and I hope to renew it as soon as possible."

Atalanta 1-2 Roma
PA

BERGAMO, January 13 (Serie A) - Roma came from behind to beat Atalanta on Sunday and maintain their seven-point gap to runaway league leaders Internazionale.

Ferreira Pinto fired the hosts in front on 17 minutes before Francesco Totti equalised with a powerful free-kick seven minutes before the break.

Amantino Mancini put the Romans in front on the stroke of half-time and the Giallorossi held on to inflict a second home defeat of the season on Atalanta.

The win sees Roma move three points clear of Juventus, who had moved ahead of Luciano Spalletti's men on goal difference following their 1-1 draw at Catania on Saturday.

The hosts started well and Morris Carrozzieri was first to test Alexander Doni with a strike from the distance that forced the goalkeeper to dive to his right to clear.

Roma took their time to get going but managed to put a good move together on 12 minutes, Rodrigo Taddei serving an unmarked Mancini whose close-range effort was saved by goalkeeper Ferdinando Coppola.

Spalletti's men continued to surge forward and were unlucky not to break the deadlock on 15 minutes.

Taddei: Rome's where the heart is
Tuesday 15 January, 2008

Roma winger Rodrigo Taddei remains enamoured with the Giallorossi and hopes for a glorious future in the Eternal City.

The former Siena star has been a consistent performer for the capital club since his arrival at the Stadio Olimpico in 2005 and was part of the side that saw off Atalanta 2-1 last Sunday.

Although Taddei admits that it is hard to see Inter's seven-point lead disintegrating, he believes that the Lupi are a team to be feared.

I don't talk about the Scudetto so that I don't jinx it, but I'm not sure that the powers that be will allow us that joy this year anyway," the 27-year-old told the Guerin Sportivo.

"As a club, Roma has the characteristics of a championship side in the DNA and we will try and play our part.

"But we deserve respect in the Champions League, even if we are lacking a bit of European experience.

"Against Lyon last year they were laughing at us before the game, but we did the talking on the pitch."[/COLOR[COLOR=green]]

Rome has a special place in Taddei's heart and it seems unlikely that he will accept a move away from the city of the seven hills in the near future.

"Rome for me is the Earthly Paradise - the cradle of ambitions," the articulate forward continued. "I love Roman life and have even adopted the dialect in my daily life.

"Nonetheless, it is difficult to say whether I'll be here for the rest of my career, as you never know in football.

"Even marriages that last for years can end badly, but I hope that isn't the case. Roma is more like a wife than a lover so you obviously hope to stay together for as long as possible."

As he possesses an Italian passport and is yet to represent his native Brazil, Taddei has been tipped for a place in Roberto Donadoni's squad for Euro 2008, but he has ruled out any involvement in Austria and Switzerland.

"I want to thank Donadoni for the support he has shown for me, but I will continue to hope for the Selecao call out of respect for the Italian players trying to get a place in the side," he insisted.

Taddei closed with a word on compatriot Amantino Mancini, whose future at the club is up in the air ahead of contract talks later this week.

"He is a Roma player and he has shown his dedication over the last few years," he maintained. "His professionalism is beyond reproach. I hope that things work out well and he stays with the Giallorossi."

Roma 4 - 0 Torino

w00t what a game ! this is the 2nd leg of the Coppa match n we lose 1-3 in 1st leg, so we need to score 2... n in the end we scored 4 ! rclxms.gif

the 1st half was terrible with Vucinic n Perrotta missing chances here n there (not surprising though). Giuly n Totti then came on for 2nd half, n bom! it paid off. Mancini scored the 1st, Totti added another 2, n Giuly grab 1 for himself.

to make things better, Totti now had scored 200 official goals for us. notworthy.gif

fantastic result... Forza Roma !!!

Coppa: Totti's 200th ends Toro dream
Wednesday 16 January, 2008

Francesco Totti's brace - his 200th career goal for the club - inspired Roma to overturn a 3-1 first leg defeat and thrash Torino 4-0.

The Giallorossi knew they had a mountain to climb after losing the first leg 3-1 in Turin, but also had to rest players for their Serie A commitments as well as trying to defend their Coppa title.

Mirko Vucinic wasted a good chance created by Simone Perrotta and Amantino Mancini had an effort from distance, but Toro started to take control after the opening 20 minutes.

The visitors had the best chance to score in the first half, as David Di Michele went on a slalom inside the area that brought two tough saves out of Alexandre Doni as the Roma defence was a shambles.

Alvaro Recoba, Vucinic, Perrotta and a Philippe Mexes' header also had scoring opportunities before the break.

Ludovic Giuly was thrown on for the second half in a last ditch bid to keep Roma in the competition and he went on a fine solo effort before aiming for goal rather than cutting back for a teammate.

They needed more and Francesco Totti replaced a jeered Vucinic on the hour mark. Moments later Perrotta sparked a Giuly counter and this time the Frenchman was generous in setting up Mancini's simple side-foot finish from eight yards.

Just 120 seconds afterwards Totti completed the comeback to make it 3-3 on aggregate. Giuly's miss-hit shot was redirected into the net from six yards by the captain.

Spalletti's Coppa contentment
Thursday 17 January, 2008

Roma boss Luciano Spalletti couldn't hide his delight as the Giallorossi thumped Torino 4-0 to secure a place in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.

The capital club had it all to do after losing the first leg 3-1, but a remarkable second-half rally saw the holders hit the net four times to stun the Granata.

"When you play a game of that intensity and you're looking to overturn such a big deficit you need to give everything, but we were coming off the back of a break that has allowed us to put a number of things right," Spalletti explained on La7.

Francesco Totti was the hero as he turned the game around with a quick-fire brace after arriving as a substitute in the 58th minute, but the Lupi tactician ran over to Ludovic Giuly as soon as the final whistle sounded.

"We know that Francesco Totti always scores goals, but I didn't even know that Giuly would play as he has been suffering from 'flu' and he was perfect after coming off the bench," the Tuscan Coach explained.

"In the second half he gave us a push and then scored a great goal.

"I want to congratulate everyone because Torino were a tough side to get past," Spalletti concluded.

Torino's Walter Novellino insisted that the score-line flattered Roma, but believed that Totti's introduction took the game away from his men.

"From the chances that there were I wouldn't have thought the game could have finished 4-0," he lamented.

"Totti had a hand in everything. In the first half we played very well, but his quality made the difference.

"It's a shame that we are out because we had chances in the first period and I think we are going through an unlucky spell, but I don't want to take anything away from Roma," he said.
