Torino 0 - 0 Roma
shit game n shit performance from the boys. we are lucky to get away with a point. yes we played a lot better in 2nd half, but damn we were still way below par. Torino should kick their own asses for not getting the goals they deserved. seriously i give up on the scudetto race now. we juz cant play consistent enough. |

Aquilani recovers, Totti struggles
Tuesday 18 December, 2007 Roma midfield starlet Alberto Aquilani is ready to return from a long-term thigh injury, but there's less encouraging news for Francesco Totti. Aquilani has been out of action since limping off during the Giallorossi's Champions League defeat against Manchester United on October 2. The injury halted a glittering start to the campaign, which saw Aquilani hit two sensational long-range goals in the opening two games. After an agonising period on the sidelines, the 23-year-old has returned to training and could feature in Wednesday's Coppa Italia last 16 tie against Torino. However, as one key figure prepares to return to the field, another has suffered an injury setback. Inspirational captain Totti looks set to miss out on the capital club's final games of 2007 after reporting pain in his ankle. Er Pupone had returned to action with the aid of a special boot to protect his damaged foot, but it seems that he hasn't yet healed completely. Roma boss Luciano Spalletti may now opt to send Totti away for an early Christmas break and hope that he is at 100 per cent for the first game of 2008 away to Atalanta on January 13. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Spalletti expects Coppa passion
Tuesday 18 December, 2007 Roma take on Torino for the second time in a week when they square off in the Coppa Italia tomorrow and Luciano Spalletti demands a better result. The Giallorossi were held by the Granata on Sunday in a frustrating stalemate that saw Spalletti's men fail to capitalise on the dismissal of Gianluca Comotto. The capital club may struggle to find the same motivation in the Coppa Italia, but their Coach is expecting a positive response from a weakened side. "It's an important tournament and tomorrow's game will give me the chance to find space for players who haven't had many chances so far," Spalletti explained. "I'm convinced that whoever plays will give their best whether they played on Sunday or not. "My job is to keep the players focused on the things that they can change and not to dwell on the other factors." Some unfamiliar faces have reached the squad, including goalkeeper Alexander Doni's brother winger Joao Paulo Marangon. Midfield star Alberto Aquilani isn't fit enough to take any part after recovering from a long-term thigh injury and Francesco Totti has suffered a recurrence of his foot problem. Roma (squad): Julio Sergio, Curci, Zotti; Antunes, Cassetti, Cicinho, Ferrari, Juan, Tonetto; Brighi, De Rossi, Perrotta, Pit, Pizarro; Della Penna, Mancini, Vucinic » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Coppa: Recoba breaks Roma
Wednesday 19 December, 2007 Alvaro Recoba scored two screamers to stun Roma into submission as Torino won their Coppa Italia first leg tie 3-1. The two teams had only met this weekend in a 0-0 draw under the shadow of the Alps and were face to face once again three days later. El Chino has been disappointing so far this season, but within two minutes made clear this would be a game that proved a point, as his cross-shot was about to curl in from the byeline before Gianluca Curci's save. Mirko Vucinic had a couple of chances, but Recoba broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion on 13 minutes. His dummy left Daniele De Rossi for dead and he unleashed a left-foot daisy-cutter from almost 30 metres. Simone Barone went off with muscular problems and Curci closed down Roberto Stellone's counter-attack, but the visitors improved as the first half wore on and equalised in stoppages with an all-Brazilian goal. Cicinho's searching pass sent Amantino Mancini running for a low angled drive inside the box. It did not last long, as Recoba came out after the restart with a fire in his belly and beat Curci for the second time. The Uruguayan sprung the offside trap and blasted a powerful strike under the crossbar with his weaker right foot. Curci denied Recoba his hat-trick after the Toro star had shaken off Matteo Ferrari, while Sasa Bjelanovic just failed to get the decisive touch to Chino's assist. Roma had penalty appeals for a Bottone handling offence and De Rossi went close to drawing level, his glancing header inches away. Just as the Giallorossi were pouring forward, Toro snatched a third. Gianluca Comotto, who was sent off against Roma on Sunday, nodded in Vincenzo Grella's assist from a move sparked by that man Recoba. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Spalletti: We can be the Real deal
Saturday 22 December, 2007 Luciano Spalletti believes Roma can eliminate Real Madrid from the Champions League. "It depends on us, if we're at our best then we can beat anyone." The tactician admits he wasn't exactly overjoyed at the draw for the first knockout stage after qualifying in second place behind Manchester United. "On paper I would have preferred Porto or Sevilla, but when you reach this level there are always going to be difficulties," commented Spalletti. "It will all depend on us. If we play at our best, then we can beat anyone on the day." Real Madrid stuttered in the group phase, where they were held 2-2 at the Olimpico by Lazio and only secured qualification on the final day. "The team struggled a little at the start of the season, then found their path. Real focus more on the quality of their play than a physical approach." The first leg will be in the Italian capital on Tuesday February 19, but the decider is at the Bernabeu on March 5. "The order of the games is of little importance. People think that playing the second leg at home is an advantage, but it is purely psychological." The Giallorossi are in action this evening against Spalletti's old club Sampdoria and Francesco Totti is in the squad after recovering from an ankle problem. "Alberto Aquilani still does not feel secure, but Totti took part in full training, could kick the ball well and is available." Rodrigo Taddei and the suspended Philippe Mexes are sidelined, but Samp are missing former Roma starlet Antonio Cassano due to a ban. "They have earned some good results even without Cassano. He is in good shape and he came to visit us when we travelled up for the game with Genoa. "Cassano was very critical about his own behaviour, but the difference will be when he manages to turn that into action." » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Serie A Week 17 - 22/12/07 (19.30 UK)
Roma 2 - 0 Sampdoria Totti pen 18, 90 ® Stadio Olimpico Francesco Totti showed he hasn't lost confidence as his brace - including an audacious penalty - defeated Sampdoria 2-0. The Giallorossi needed all they could get from this game after falling seven points behind leaders Inter. Francesco Totti returned from an ankle injury, but Rodrigo Taddei, Alberto Aquilani and the suspended Philippe Mexes were sidelined. Samp were without former Roma starlet Antonio Cassano due to a ban - something that saw him burst into tears in the middle of last week's 2-2 draw with Fiorentina. Vincenzo Montella was also out of action. A minute's silence was held before every game this weekend after 18-year-old referee Lorenzo Moreno collapsed and died during a match in Verona today. Emiliano Bonazzoli and Christian Maggio combined to cause problems early on, but Totti tried to dribble past several Samp players in the box and eventually saw his progress cut short. Luca Castellazzi did well to parry Marco Cassetti's attempt after a lucky ricochet sent him clear on the edge of the box. After just 17 minutes the referee pointed to the spot for a Stefano Lucchini shirt tug on Matteo Ferrari as a free kick was floated into the area. Totti stepped up and audaciously chipped his penalty over Castellazzi - showing there was no loss of confidence during his long injury lay-off. David Pizarro's effort from distance accidentally hit Totti, but at the other end Max Tonetto's error sparked a counter-attack and Alexander Doni stuck out a strong hand to push Maggio's shot round the near post. Soon after a Sergio Volpi free kick curled to the back post where Lucchini ballooned over with the inside of his right foot from six yards. Castellazzi smothered Daniele De Rossi and Mirko Vucinic snapshots from 20 metres, then rushed out to close down Simone Perrotta after the midfielder had combined at speed with Totti. After the break Totti's splendid flick round the back of his standing leg found Vucinic inside the box, but the Montenegrin was charged down. Pizarro's free kick from distance curled right on to the roof of the net. Perrotta almost scored one of the goals of the season after 53 minutes. Totti flicked on a throw-in and the World Cup winning midfielder smashed a right-foot shot on the bounce that cracked against the top of the crossbar. Perrotta was on splendid form and soon after Volpi was forced to body-check him down on the counter, earning an inevitable second yellow card. From the resulting well-worked free kick, Castellazzi captured a deflected De Rossi effort. Claudio Bellucci pounced on a ricochet to turn a free header over, as 10-man Samp did not sit back, but the ball did not fall kindly for Perrotta from six yards and Hugo Campagnaro did just enough to prevent a certain goal. From the resulting corner a Perrotta scissor-kick from the edge of the box was well held, but substitute Amantino Mancini was unlucky as his shot flashed across the face of goal to take a coat of paint off the far post. The Blucerchiati weren't out of it yet and Tonetto charged down Emiliano Bonazzoli's volley. 10-man Sampdoria almost snatched an equaliser three minutes from time, as Doni performed a stunning one-handed save on Andrea Caracciolo's volley. From the corner Campagnaro ballooned over unmarked at the back post. Doni's save proved decisive, as in the final minute Totti scored his second of the game. Most of the credit goes to Cassetti, who sprinted down the left flank and rolled across for the captain to stroke home from a couple of yards. It was Totti's 160th Serie A goal. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |
