Perrotta skips Napoli game
Saturday 30 August, 2008
Simone Perrotta and Francesco Totti are out of Roma's season opener against Napoli on Sunday afternoon.

There were some doubts over the midfielder due to a tendon problem and this evening it was confirmed he will not be part of the squad this weekend.

Totti is also sidelined after picking up a knock to the ankle during the Italian Super Cup clash with Inter last week.

He is still recovering from the knee ligament surgery in April, so Coach Luciano Spalletti preferred not to risk it.

Roma must also do without the injured Rodrigo Taddei, Mauro Esposito and Vincenzo Montella for the big game with Napoli.

The transfer has come through for Jeremy Menez, so the Frenchman could feasibly make his Serie A debut on Sunday.

Roma squad: Alvarez, Aquilani, Artur, Baptista, Brighi, Cassetti, Cicinho, De Rossi, Doni, Juan, Julio Cesar, Loria, Marangon, Menez, Mexes, Okaka, Panucci, Pizarro, Riise, Tonetto, Vucinic

finally our Serie A season kick start 2nite ! rclxm9.gif

1st game at home against Napoli... tricky match i would say, still remember the 4-4 draw laz season.

Totti, Perrotta, n Taddei are out, so most probably we'll see Baptista as AM n Menez might get a chance to play too. cant wait !

Forza Roma !!! biggrin.gif

Roma 1 - 1 Napoli

awful performance from the boys. we cant even played better than Napoli who hav Santacroce sent off. in fact, they played much better that if not of Doni made that 2 saves we would hav lost the match already.

Baptista was poor there, gave away the ball cheaply, bur struggling on the wing. Riise played well, showed some nice determination n work rate. Menez missed a golden chance to become an instant hero, but so far its positive from him. i believe he can do well if play right from the start.

Inter n us draw, AC lost... looks like this season is going to be very exciting. biggrin.gif

lol.. 1st match, ac lost edi? mm actually i expected edi that last nite game was awful. not watched it, but just have in mind that without totti and perrota, the game must be boring..
QUOTE
Luciano Spalletti concedes Roma have a few problems to work on after failing to defeat 10-man Napoli and predicts a very open Serie A season.

“Overall the team played well, but in terms of detail we have a few problems,” said the Coach after the 1-1 draw at the Olimpico.

Alberto Aquilani had given them the lead, but just one minute after Fabiano Santacroce’s red card, Napoli equalised through Marek Hamsik.

Despite playing against 10 men for over half an hour, the Giallorossi were unable to net again and repeatedly risked defeat.

“This match was open to absolutely any result. Napoli did very well to make the most of certain situations.

“At times we go in too soft and our opponents, even if less technically gifted, can punish us for that. Plus there were four new players and we have to work on those issues of settling them into the team.”

It has been an opening weekend full of shock results, as Inter and Roma were held by traditionally mid-table teams, while Milan lost on home turf to new boys Bologna.

“I get the feeling this is going to be a much more even and open Serie A season than last year,” concluded Spalletti.

Napoli’s confidence is unshakable after going through the Intertoto Cup to re-enter UEFA and earning this point despite the red card.

“In the first half Roma were really moving the ball around in their classic style,” explained Coach Edy Reja.

“We had some good chances on the counter-attack with Ezequiel Lavezzi and managed to hold up even with 10 men perhaps because of our superior fitness levels.”

Much was expected of Argentine striker German Gustavo Denis, but he disappointed on his debut.

“This was his first encounter with Serie A football, so we need to give him time. He has great potential. As for Hamsik, he is still young and constantly improving, though he has to improve his defensive movement.”

it's just the 1st match day and so much drama in the serie A. it proves serie A is jus as exciting wit the BPL, if not more. enuf said

i feel Roma need time 2 settle with so many major signings dis time around n we r still missing our Mr Roma Totti. it was an exciting match against Napoli. i still rmbr Roma drew 4-4 with Napoli in the same fixture last season...Napoli is a gud side with the likes of Hamsik(has been linked with few top clubs), Lavezzi n Zalayeta.

i still believe that Roma will do well dis season.

Just got to know mancini went to Inter? Why on earth did spaletti permit that?
He has been one of the consistent performer every season and of all club to Inter?
It's really different compare BPL where top clubs dun sell to each other.

well no, Mancini hav no prob wif Spalletti as far as i know...

Mancini left us, simply bcoz he wan a big n fat pay cheque. his contract was going to expire by end of this season, n we did offered him an improved comtract by mid of laz season, which he rejected. that left us no choice but to cash in from him rather than let he leave as a free agent.

n he's far from a consistent performer, those who watch Serie A regularly will know that. yeah sure he did hav some period where he hit the red hot form, but mostly he's a burden to the team.
