Mexican ace Nery Castillo is reportedly close to agreeing terms with Roma but the Giallorossi will have to start talks with Shakthar Donetsk first.

Castillo is currently on loan at Manchester City but the player has expressed a desire to join the Giallorossi. According to some Italian reports the two parties are in advanced negotiations.

“We will meet up during the week. At the moment we haven’t decided the exact dates and I am waiting for a call from Daniele Pradè,” said Castillo’s agent Gianluca Marino.

“Roma have more than one target and Castillo could be one of those. Daniele was talking with Luciano Spalletti regarding the technical qualities of the player and then we will discuss the financial side of the deal.”

According to Marino Shakhtar are willing to sell the player and an agreement could be found shortly. “They want to sell him and it wouldn’t take much to find an agreement if Roma were serious about him.”

A few days ago Castillo was close to Real Betis but the player, who is really excited at the prospective of playing at the Olimpico alongside Francesco Totti, has decided to stop the transfer.

“The Spaniards are waiting but Nery said he wants to play in Italy. He wants the Giallorossi because they are a prestigious side and because he thinks he would fit in well in Spalletti’s formation.

“Now he is waiting for Roma. There is not much time left, one week before the end of the transfer window, but in the next 24-48 hours we should have everything clear,” he concluded.

Luciano Spalletti concedes Roma have a few problems to work on after failing to defeat 10-man Napoli and predicts a very open Serie A season.

“Overall the team played well, but in terms of detail we have a few problems,” said the Coach after the 1-1 draw at the Olimpico.

Alberto Aquilani had given them the lead, but just one minute after Fabiano Santacroce’s red card, Napoli equalised through Marek Hamsik.

Despite playing against 10 men for over half an hour, the Giallorossi were unable to net again and repeatedly risked defeat.

“This match was open to absolutely any result. Napoli did very well to make the most of certain situations.

“At times we go in too soft and our opponents, even if less technically gifted, can punish us for that. Plus there were four new players and we have to work on those issues of settling them into the team.”

It has been an opening weekend full of shock results, as Inter and Roma were held by traditionally mid-table teams, while Milan lost on home turf to new boys Bologna.

“I get the feeling this is going to be a much more even and open Serie A season than last year,” concluded Spalletti.

Napoli’s confidence is unshakable after going through the Intertoto Cup to re-enter UEFA and earning this point despite the red card.

“In the first half Roma were really moving the ball around in their classic style,” explained Coach Edy Reja.

“We had some good chances on the counter-attack with Ezequiel Lavezzi and managed to hold up even with 10 men perhaps because of our superior fitness levels.”

Much was expected of Argentine striker German Gustavo Denis, but he disappointed on his debut.

“This was his first encounter with Serie A football, so we need to give him time. He has great potential. As for Hamsik, he is still young and constantly improving, though he has to improve his defensive movement.”
