Compare with the previous software, the missing settings and features on beta v1.1 are:
1. Change aspect ratio button - Unable to temporary change aspect ratio, as the button will open "TV Settings" where once u change there, it will apply to all channels.
2. Recording Preferences
Review Buffer depth, recording start time  and recording end time extension, Hard Disk management mode
3. For PVR, you can't skip 15 mins by pressing fast forward again and again.
4. Programme reminder
4. Block channels
5. Set Favourite Channels
6. Change channel banner duration, screensaver
7. Tuner Diagnostics, Connection Info (to check transponder frequency)
8. Transponder Scan

New settings to highlight:
1. Now allow 1080p output
2. Separate digital audio output (HDMI Audio, S/PDIF) and Dolby Digital Plus.
If you previously experience "no sound when watch HD channels" issue on your TV when set to Dolby 5.1 output, well, it is now solved in this new update.
3. Experimental cloud DVR
Some channels allow you to "Play from Start", where the channel video will load from Internet instead of satellite, so that you can watch the parts you missed earlier.
4. ABR streaming on VOD content
Adaptive bitrate streaming. Slow internet, poor quality. Fast internet, good quality.

*Don't panic. Now it's just beta testing version, means it's pre-released and unfinished. Those missing features might come back in the final version.
*
For new features under no 3, the experimental cloud dvr let’s say the tv show starts earlier/ends later than the time indicated by the TV guide( Astro pvr would only start/stop record when its time) will I be able to catch up on what I missed ?

Guessing DMT 5 v2 would get it as well eventhough it's on astro IPTV( IP mode - WIFI can't be enabled)

btw, q3 2019 doesn't really make a difference

Apparently yes. Astro has the world class customer service that doesn't give a **** about customers problems. What they care is as long you pay your bills on time.

Try email them to wecare@astro.com.my along with your Astro account number for further assistance.
*
So I’ve contacted them via twitter and they replied asking for personal details so that they can contact me, I’m not free for phone call and would rather chat/ email instead.... Will they do the same for email ?

I just checked with Astro customer service via Facebook, they replied me with 2 messages:

"We are sorry to inform you that Astro will be decommissioning the Astro Go Smart TV app. We have since removed the app from LG store from downloads."

"We are updating the Smart TV app which shall include disabling the service from the LG Smart TV until further notice"
Do you have a link or screenshot of that post? I couldn't find it on Astro Facebook page.

Their 4K decoder available now??
*
It’s in beta now

https://www.astro.com.my/beta-program/cloud-4kuhd

I see that Astro have another opportunity to earn $$$$ with cloud storage and according to the FAQ, you can’t record all channel/ for some channel, the recording can be stored for a certain period of time. You can’t even access the cloud recording from Astro GO, kinda defeats the purpose of cloud PVR

Oh interesting...

Well astro is desperate now... Must find new ways to earn additional $$$..
*
I wonder how's the cloud PVR is going to work..... does this mean that you can record more than 2 channels and still watch live TV?

Not eligible for this since the minimum requirement is a 4K tv(2017 or newer) + not astro IPTV/NJOI customer

But not able to watch it on the go is kinda defeat the purpose of cloud DVR........ especially when your house wifi is down/those houses that don't have wifi/those who use streamyx

>4K UHD channel will not be available for recording

wonder if normal PVR (with slow 500GB) users is also affected... wink.gif
*
Based on the size of the decoder in the photo, I don’t think it comes equipped with HDD in it( the 4K decoder), maybe only a 2.5” HDD instead of the 3.5” desktop hdd.

Normal PVR( DMT 5v2 )doesn’t support 4K if not mistaken, therefore won’t be able to see the 4K channel ?

I wonder if astro would upgrade normal HD PVR user to the new 4K decoder in the future and say that you must connect WiFi to use PVR.

Plus, is there still A LOT of PVR users today still do programme recordings anyway? Or they would catch up and watch their shows On Demand or Astro Go instead?
*
My mum still does that in my house and cousin still does that in my grandma's house and the house has no internet at all, no fibre (not installed) and poor cell signal

QUOTE(joshhd @ Aug 11 2019, 01:43 AM)
I think a better option for Astro is to allow external hard disk based recording to all 4K UHD box users, instead of forcing all 4K UHD box users to use only cloud recording.
They can allow the 4K UHD box user to connect their own external hard disk via USB 3.0 port to allow them to do recording that saves directly to their hard disk, as well as timeshift feature (Review Buffer Depth) to allow user to have PVR functions (rewind, fast forward, pause) without having any internet connection just like the current PVR box users. The external hard disk got to be formatted before use of course.
However, the performance, storage, reliability, etc. will be the user's own responsibility. If the hard disk is faulty, the recordings will be gone for good. Or, Astro can allow its users to do own backup or migration to another external hard disk.  biggrin.gif
All recordings are encrypted of course, and it can't be played on computer or any devices that is not from 4K UHD box.

Maybe they should allow for NAS (with raid) as well? That would allow for ( depending on user configuration) x amount of HDD to fail before the recoding is lost

NAS? You mean Astro Go users can stream their recorded shows directly from the NAS connected to their 4K UHD box to their devices. Woah that's a good idea too. It rely on user's Internet connection more. Even lesser strain to Astro servers. But I don't think many users would do that, but still a good idea. And with RAID, users won't have to worry on losing their recordings anymore, and the hard disks involved will be the expense of user's liability. But does that means their 4K UHD box will have to support RAID configuration and build up? Sounds like it's complicated...
Alternatively, they could allow user to transfer or migrate from Hard Disk A to Hard Disk B (another hard disk) in case if hard disk A is going to be faulty, hence recordings won't be lost. Not as good as RAID, but it's simpler and consumer friendly though.

*
Yup, Astro decoder streams from the NAS in their house, since with cloud PVR, it's going to use the download speed of the user so maybe a NAS in the house to cache the recording/ store on the local network. Maybe a premade NAS solution for those who aren't tech-savvy and with the NAS company to test and certify the model on the store shelf.

For the migration thing, the decoder needs to have a reliable SMART feature and warn the user if the HDD is failing and have some failsafe to preserve the HDD till the user is able to transfer the data from HDD A to HDD B

For those users who were into building their own NAS, maybe a DIY NAS with UNRAID as the OS, for example, is a good idea as well. The NAS reliability is on the user as the user pick out their own components, OS, etc

Astro Ultra.

only manage to try for a short time since i'm working, arrange with the installer to come during lunch break.  biggrin.gif

- they will change the LNB receiver
- old remote still can use with the new decoder
- use 'sim card' instead of the old smart card

My guess the function is same as the old smart card, just smaller size which is similar to sim card as we use for mobile phone. The installer use the word 'sim card' which also make me curious.  hmm.gif  I will check the manual book when I'm home.

Yes, just the LNB receiver, still using the same dish for byond.
I'm on superpack 1, RM150++

No, still use HDMI cable to connect to TV and also cable connected from power supply . The picture is from the box, I didn't manage to snap photo of  the actual decoder as I was in rush. It's very small, save space.  thumbup.gif
*
But no offline recording though as there’s no HDD built in

Inconvenient for those who have no internet / internet down

Unless the “SIM card” provides data for it

Though if there’s poor coverage it wouldn’t be useful

Blocking android TV box from accessing the internet ??

Android tv box runs android so means block android smartphone to connect to the internet ?? Also android doesn’t equal to piracy, the software that the user installed is the one responsible.

Not only that Astro is forcing its user to connect their PVR decoder to the internet with their new firmware now in beta and their 4K UHD decoder.... Some people don't have wifi or is still using screamyx.

managed to swap my laggy PVR to UHD Box without 4k tv, without 10mbps connection, without Sport package on yesterday morning. only thing is can't select the UHD resolution, nice design, smoother user interface, 1 year warranty for new box. they only change the LNB, sim card, remote control.

Astro changed it by themselves or did you register for the beta program ?
