hi guys

coming from cherry mx black, would there be a huge difference in typing and gaming feels if i were to switch to cherry mx red or mx speed?

im planning to switch from cm quickfire rapid mx black to either ducky shine 6 red or speed, or do you guys have any other mkb recommendation that has RGB at a lower price point but close enough build quality?
*
I have used black and red. The stiffer feels on black is kinda nice for me during gaming. Coz i like to "pound" on my keys.

But typing wise, its heavy n tiring.

I miss my black kibod. sad.gif

Just wondering how big is the resale market for keycaps here.. I am so tempted to get the DSA Ice Cream on Massdrop. But am very worried that I cannot get used to the DSA profile and would like to sell it out later, but am unsure about how possible it is to sell out later.

you have higher chance to sell the set elsewhere imo. you should try mymkb fb page, reddit, geekhack, etc.

you should also try out the profile with cheaper options first.

the most obvious difference is the spring weights. the actuation force for red/speed is 45cN, while black is 60cN.

for red/speed users (me included), black is stiffer. this affects typing speed. (i touch type usually. the same force that i use on red sometimes doesn't actuate keys on black) in your case, you might misfire hehe (because red are relatively lighter to you) however it's not that obvious for gaming.

all in all, just give them a try at shops with demonstration units of red/speed.

as for the build quality, ducky users should give you better ideas.
*
ended up with ducky one tkl red. it does feel lighter, and it's sort of giving me the 'cheap' feeling when typing on it. i've had several misfires already but ill prolly get used to it heh biggrin.gif

Hmm where will you suggest that I'll be able to find some cheaper DSA profile keycaps? Taobao, aliexpress etc?

ok. not sure how red switches gave you a 'cheap' typing feel, but i guess it might be just the transition smile.gif

you should go look for these caps at taobao/aliexpress

yes taobao/aliexpress have cheaper dsa caps.

edit: dsa profile caps to me are too flat. looks nice, but need adjustments to regain speed.

Prolly cause id associate weight with build quality and them being lighter to the press compared to my black keycaps

But yea ill get used to it over time. I somewhat felt that this keyboard is also less noisy when typing than when I was using my QFR mx black

yeah i suspect so

even with the same switch, each manufacturer produces boards that have different typing noise and feels. stock red and black are supposed to sound similar. the difference is just stiffness.

Logitech G513 Carbon Mechanical Keyboard Reviewed

Ryan Shrout over at PC Perspective are taking the new Logitech G513 Carbon mechanical gaming keyboard for a spin. The G513 Carbon has exclusive linear Romer-G switches, and in my opinion, some very good looks. Oh and of course all the RGB frag harder disco lights one can stuff into a keyboard. But is it worth $150?

QUOTE
Finally, we come to the big selling point of the G513 Carbon, the new Romer-G linear switches. These switches carry through all of the positive qualities of the tactile switch, sans the "bump" indicating when you’ve triggered a character. This includes the higher actuation point and shorter overall travel distance of 1.5mm and 3.2mm respectively, as well as the 45g of pressure required to actuate (for those keeping score, that’s 25% faster actuations than a standard MX-style switch). Compared to the prior generation of Romer-Gs, this puts them much closer to a standard Cherry MX Red - or even better, Cherry MX Silent Red.

Utterly bullshit review laugh.gif
What omron did this time is introduce the linear switch romer-G, the previous only tactile.

Back to their history, their first generation blue case tactile is feel like membrane.
After POWER users feedback, they revamped the switch to remove rubber bump, and second generation black case switch feel more like a mechanical switch.
I tried the second generation, it feels like short travel Brown switch.
So what's wrong with Romer-G at this point? The switch will actuate at the very short press, which emphasise what gaming need, 25% faster.
However, the full travel is just 3.2mm, you don't feel it's good end press. Like you press nicely, suddenly potong stim. <-- (They should improve it to 3.8-4.0mm.)

Now, linear version released (first generation linear), just a simple tweak from second generation, reduce the weak bump to scratchy.
Well, I think it's great improvement. Romer-G should be in linear, so less potong stim.

Most importantly, it's no where near to Cherry MX feel. What I feel is, this switch is only viable to Gamers, but not typist.

Note: for tactile switch bump clarity; Kailh Box Brown > Cherry MX Brown > Gateron Brown > Omron Romer-G Tactile

thanks Moogle. it's a nice read. it's written by 'a huge fan of romer-g switches'. the author went on and said that romer-g's tactile switches feel 'almost exactly the same' as the new linear variant.

.. i stopped reading after that, because i was not sure if he wanted to point out that tactile romer-g is actually just scratchy linear, or something else.

i believe that romer-g linear is a good option for gaming boards. in fact they should forget about tactile and went straight to linear from the start. however they should stop screwing around with reviews like this one.

later i will try to make a gk64 with costar stabs.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

changing caps for mods are back to the time-consuming part compared to cherry style stabs lol!

like i said, gk64 is a nice pcb that helps me learn a lot more than what i need to learn hehe

60% has a relatively good ecosystem for anyone who are interested in a rich set of parts, from switches, up to cases, plates, stabs, modifications, etc. best of all, it's a fully functional keyboard. it's now a mock-up board for me to build permanent customs.
