if you want the full bling then clear type films is a must. standard colorful switch films relevant when you have black housing like this

Thanks, that is a very nice aesthetic. Have you tried it on clear housings on a board with SMD RGB?

I have read some redditors saying that it makes almost no difference in the light transmission to use coloured films but I don't always trust it when only 1 user says that.

Anyone bought these generic switch films before?

If I have RGB, how important is it that I get clear films?

Personally have not used the stickers type before, but I've used the film type before, it would not affect the lightning as there's nothing over the LED slot.

Also, according to some of my friends whom had used the sticker type before, given the minimal price difference, they rather use the film type coz it's a lot easier to work with.

OK so I should qualify that I will not be using backlit keycaps. I'll be relying on the light diffusion effect of the transparent housing to get an underglow between keycaps.

Since the SMD LEDs will transmit its light 180 degrees, some of it will be blocked by the film. Question is, would it be enough to matter?

In my experience, none.

Never bought keyboard stuff more than RM500 at one time from Taobao, but I have bought plenty of leather and leathercraft tools that came to more than RM500 from there and have never been taxed.

if you have a plateless build, or a plated build with switch top removal support, yes.

edit: however, it's better to do switch tuning and test them out first before soldering. it's more convenient.

Oh no. I am looking at a pre-built mkb, because custom build one is so expensive.

edit: can take a look at this one ? Cant lube already right?

er what's your budget? which form factor are you looking for? the custom builds are not expensive, unless you use all those expensive parts.

there is a temporary workaround to lube switches on soldered prebuilts, but only with partial outcomes of properly lubed switches.

for switch lubing, i suggest to do it properly, with the right lube and techniques that you want.

even with plates that claim support for switch top removal, its actually a pain to do so. might, that iqunix seems to be a custom kit, why not buy it and send to a builder like grexer to do it for you?

96%. i havent looked into other form factors, so i dont know their pricing.

melody 96 kit 1 with acrylic bot (excluding switches, leds and key caps) is almost rm600 already, kit 2 full alu almost 800 LOL.

iqunix f96 KAT ~680, everything included. KAT Alpha keycap costs 100usd, but iqunix clones GMK keycaps and implements them into their products. So the KAT keycaps i think the company also copies from the original KAT alpha.

no, this one should be done before soldering.

right, i have the prying tool so it's relatively easier for me i guess. (did it before to add switch films)

yes it's better to get a kit, and let a builder build it for you.

oh ok 96%, one of the rarer form factors.

i think you need to understand something: kit 2 for ymdk melody96 is a full-metal kit, with brass weight, usb-c port, qmk-based pcb (with solderable and hot-swap options), its top-mount plate supports switch top removal. (this option should be the heftiest) it's way better and relatively cheaper than f96, just by comparing features. top-mount keyboard construction is obviously better than tray-mount for typing feel and sound.

f96 and nym96 are tray-mount.

It would not be in the way at all, to better illustrate the idea, I think a picture would do the trick. This was intentionally taken with various different colours so you get the idea better. Teal films over SMD switch over purple background.

Possible, but not ideally. Best is to get whatever tuning done to the switches before soldering.

Yeah, without the right tools, it's a bitch to remove the switch tops while mounted inside the plate. Not to mention because of the slots in the plate, it also causes the switches to be a little loose fitting within the plate.

That iQunix seems like a pre-build though. Around RM600-700 depending on where is it bought from.

Yes I can see how it would not be an issue with partially opaque bottom housings like cherry RGB switches. I'll be using Aliaz though whose transparent bottom would allow even more light diffusion.

But I guess since cherry can manage with that kind of bottom, it should be fine.
