I have also been hit by this scam. Being charged the full Rm38 for a single SMS or recieving a 30s call.. with no way to opt out easily.

As a forum member above has done, we will be getting together to complain to skmm regarding this as well. And probably leave maxis, after many years of being their customer. What a shame.

stated on the webpage :

MaxisONE Plan users are automatically subscribed to MaxisONE World. All they need to do is just to switch on their roaming in their phones.

Turn on data roaming or make a call or send an SMS.
My problem is that i don't need the whole day plan... Recently travel to Singapore and every morning I only received 1 or 2 important SMS. and Data roaming is OFF.

But when i back home.. the bill put 4 days of RM38 each day... thats RM152 for few SMS i did....
*
used it in bangkok, sg and indonesia.. no issue..
it got charged as long
1. dont use and turn off da roaming before 12am
( so if ure connected to hotel wifi.. no prob)

used it in hk, taiwan, and US
no prob. same as above.

I've done my part too below after getting ripped off by Maxis over the same ridiculous charges while roaming. Please have more people raise your complaints to MCMC to stop this company from such acts of daylight roberry.

Consumer rights is very important and affects everyone.

========================================

Dear Sir/Madam,

The following is a brief summary of a complaint which you have lodged with MCMC.

Complaint ID: 0818-01-0001314-MXS
Service Provider: MAXIS
Complaint Category: Bill & Charging
Complaint Subcategory: Unreasonable Charges
Complaint Details: Please investigate the daylight robbery roaming plans that Maxis was allowed to execute to the public. I was charged a ridiculous RM20 in my recent travels to Thailand for just 1 call and 1 SMS made. When I disputed this with Maxis, they claimed that such tiered charges are applicable to 9 countries and customers have no avenues to opt out of such a ridiculous scheme. Calls made or received overseas are traditionally billed by the minute, at a premium - Which is perfectly fine and fair with me, but now that they are charged at such exhorbitant tiered rates, this calls for regulators to step in to investigate how are they even allowed to come out with such plans, which is akin to daylight robbery. My latest statement is attached and you may refer to the last page of the statement where you could see the supposed ridiculous roaming charge being levied.

Please use the Complaint ID: 0818-01-0001314-MXS for all future communication with MCMC regarding this complaint. You may use the given ID to check the status of the complaint in the MCMC

Thank you.

When is this RM38 charges start? Prior to that i nvr receive any news or notification upon user agreement. I never swtich on my phone data roaming but still charged RM38, and I turned off mobile data as well while I was on business trip oversea last month. Did a few bank transfer and received SMS for the code required. So is that why I am being charge?!

This is an absolute rip off. I kept all data roaming off, but this happens to me today when i picked up a call from the my bank regarding my credit card which i m using in SG. And when i asked maxis about the rm 38 charge and if there is anything to do about it, they are like "this is how it is". They sound like they are absolutely used to ripping off customers in this manner. I never even used one drop of their data, since i have another phone with a Sg sim card

Seriously considering dropping maxis after i go back to msia after this

Please raise a complaint via the MCMC portal. Consumers need to stand up against such unethical practices so that telcos will not get their way out easily.

Please raise a complaint via the MCMC portal so that this builds up a case against Maxis. So many people are experiencing the same predicament. Complaining here would not make any difference unless consumers all unite and fight this together.

Wait what if I just receive SMS? I don't make or receive any calls, I don't send out SMS, and don't turn on data roaming. Will I still be charged RM38? Im on Hotlink Flex Postpaid.

as long as you just receive sms and do not make a reply, you won't be charge. You should turn off the data roaming anyway , you can still receive sms.

My father went to Thailand and answered an incoming 30-sec call, immediately got charged RM10. I checked on their website, other Maxis postpaid plan's roaming rate is at RM5.80 per minute. This is so ridiculous, subscribe to high rated plan and get even higher charges???? I won't complain if the bill was charged RM5.80.

And what's worse? There are also 2 other days whereby no data/SMS/calls were being used overseas but also got charged RM10! I'm going to complain to MCMC if they can't provide me the charge details.

And I did not subscribe to this service for my father. How did it auto-activate?

Kindly refer to our FAQ for further information on how it works :

What if I just need to make a call or two when I’m abroad?
No worries. We have a few a safety tiers in case of accidental usage or if you just want to use minimal when you travel.

Tiers in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam:-

Tier 1: RM10 - Call(s) less than 3 mins, send 1-3 SMS, use less than 256Kb of data; and
Tier 2: RM38 - Call(s) more than 3 mins, send more than 3 SMS, use more than 256kb of data
However, there are different tiers for Singapore, as below:

Tier 1: RM5 – Call(s) less than 1 min, send 1-5 SMS, no use of data at all;
Tier 2: RM10 – Call(s) between 1 min to 5.59 mins, send 6-15 SMS, use less than 128kb of data and
Tier 3: RM38 – Call more than 6.00 mins, send more than 16 SMS, use more than 256kb of data.
(Note: Charging block for voice is 60 seconds)

Maxis

Glad that to know that a lot of people complained to mcmc and i am going to do so.

Same thing happened to me. Year 2017 i request to opt out from rm38 1 day pass, and to be charged per usage only, Maxis ok. then Dec 2018, suddenly i am charged back to rm38/day, reason from Maxis is because I choose the telso that come with this plan and no way i can opt out unless i choose other telco. after filed complain and investigation, they say the result is final, I have to pay accordingly.

Seriously a rip off.

yeah, I had the same issues when I was with Maxis postpaid previously. After that, I managed to get Maxis to put me in the whitelist only then I dun get the rm38 charge.

Subsequently, I switched to Celcom postpaid, again also kena the same rm38 until I discover that I can opt for this thing called “default auto roaming” which only has roaming for voice and sms but not data which is what I wan actually.

Now I am on hotlink (prepaid), ended up also kena the same thing. Even I already off the data roaming in my iPhone, I still get some unknown data roaming charges daily when I am in lion city. Only then I discovered the only solution to put my phone to on 2G/3G network while in overseas only I can avoid such charges. Super lame.

Even u dun turn on data roaming or use any data while in overseas, there is still some “handshakes” done between ur phones and telco network, thus the charge.

So do you manage to opt out permanently firm this rm38 after the complaint? Or what is the resolution in the end?

I don't think there is threshold of RM10.... already chat with the Maxis twitter guy.... there is no such thing as RM10 threshold ....

He only give me 1 advice and that is to deactivate roaming....
*
I contact maxis this is what they told me also. Either totally disable auto roaming service or rm38/day which to me is ridiculous. Imagine for those who work in lion city and travel in and out daily, how many $$ will be charged.

Celcom has this ‘default’ auto roaming service that only has voice or sms but not data. So good for those who just want to receive sms for OTP from banks or receive urgent calls from others.

Even all telcos in lion city allow disable data roaming service permanently and only allowed for voice and sms.

When are you going to SG? I am planning to visit in coming 13 May, will share you my experience, or you can share yours with me if you visit before me.

I will be there for 5 days, RM49 pass seems like a good deal with 5G

My friend is in Singapore now. Subscribed the RM49 roaming pack, but don’t know why no 5G. He is using iPhone. 13 pro max, with latest firmware and selected Singtel but no 5G available still…
