Hey,does anyone here have any idea if there are remaining seats (possibly vacant seats are available due to rejection by other candidates who have decided to go to other universities upon accepting their offers) for the Feb 2012 local programme for MBBS? I know it's so last-minute to apply now but I've just gotten my A-Level results yesterday (ABB) and want to know if it's too late to request an interview now itself, and hopefully be able to join. Am I able to appeal? Thanks in advance.

Just to check on the pms program. Apparently, the student upon registration is required to list the order of preference of the partner medical schools and when the time comes, IMU will do the matching and the student will be given its partner school. Will the student be given one choice or a multiple choice to choose from? And will any appeal be entertained? And your academic performance is no guarantee that you will get the best of the lot, rite?

And your academic performance is no guarantee that you will get the best of the lot, rite? this exercise is done at mid sem 5, not the beginning.....all students rank ALL pms, in their order of preference.... the pms also will rank the students.... there is supposedly a computer algorithm for the matching.....but it is well know, that is NOT how it is actually done..... my assessment is, they band the students....and take one from each band.....eg, if uni x takes 3 students, they band the students into 3 thirds academically......and take one from each.....that is why many good students will NOT get their choices, as you are disadvantages if you are at the bottom of that band.....someone worse, but at the top of a lower band will get the place.....happens all the time.... however, generally, if you are top 15-20%, you will get your 1st choice, as you will be at the top of the 1st band.......... appeals usually do NOT work..... this is so all unis have a spread of students.....otherwise the popular pms will always get the cream, and the lower ranked pms will always get the lousy borderline students...... |

i should add that i suspect there is also a 'black list' by some pms, particularly the oz ones.....although they never say so explicitly or implicitly.....
ie, if you have ever applied directly to the pms, and rejected, you will automatically be dropped from consideration by the uni.....as that would be considered a back door entry.....something taboo in oz.....(see the uq vc fiasco)..... |

Does it mean that IMU has the final say on where the student goes and pms does no further vetting on it? One way to avoid UKCAT, interview, medical attachment and medical related voluntary services.ie, if you have ever applied directly to the pms, and rejected, you will automatically be dropped from consideration by the uni.....as that would be considered a back door entry.....something taboo in oz.....(see the uq vc fiasco)..... |

no....the final say will rest with the recipient pms.....
however, some students will automatically be dropped from matching to some.....eg, pr's and citizens cannot match to their own country...only msians can match to canada.....people who failed any sem is excluded from some....etc... and i suspect those who had applied to oz/nz pms directly and rejected cannot be match to them again.... |

If the recipient pms does not agree, then the said student will be "recycle" until he meet his match, rite? Would there be leftovers? Or if so, would they be transferred to the local program?however, some students will automatically be dropped from matching to some.....eg, pr's and citizens cannot match to their own country...only msians can match to canada.....people who failed any sem is excluded from some....etc... and i suspect those who had applied to oz/nz pms directly and rejected cannot be match to them again.... Sorry for asking too many questions. The ppl at their booth at the education fair did not give me the right info. |

the number of pms seats is tailored to the number of pms matches available...they do take in more than available places, but about 20% will drop out/flunk out...and all students standing at the end of sem 5 WILL get a match.....
you can opt to transfer from pms stream to local....a few did that before (usually financial reasons)..... you cannot transfer from local to pms..... |

Btw to any current IMU students out there, can you all brief me as to what is to be expected from joining this uni? As in,how are classes like, what kind of extra-curricular activities do you all carry out (I'm pretty interested in joining the Swimming Club,LOL. But I hope I won't be the only 'sesat' one joining it...not sure whether there are many who have become members),what books you should purchase and learn from,etc.etc.? Yeah,I've found out as much as I could about this institution earlier on itself, but I'd like to know more. I'm pretty excited about starting this term! Your help is much appreciated in advance. QUOTE(limeuu @ Feb 5 2012, 06:02 PM) for clarification about their local stream cut off, would you mind giving us your entry qualifications?....if you don't want to display your results here, pm me..... Oh,I stated it earlier itself - I got ABB. At the interview itself, right at the beginning, one of the interviewers said to me, "Ok ABB, right? Qualified already in that respect. Now we'll just have to see how your interview progresses." Or something along those lines anyway;just paraphrasing. If I'm not mistaken, BBB is the minimum requirement right? Hmm,I guess since people are so gung-ho about entering the PMS stream, several spots are left open for those who won't mind taking up the local programme seats. Some others may even have turned down their original IMU offers in favour of those from other universities. Anyway,I don't mind doing everything locally though. At first,I was apprehensive a little about how that may affect my chances to work overseas in the future but now,I think that's okay. Still don't get why the IMU degree is not recognised overseas though. Is it because it's still a 'young' institution and the curriculum in universities abroad are more complex, detailed and rigorous in comparison? Back to the main point, I still have plenty of time to decide whether I want to stay in Malaysia and work, or go abroad instead. If I intend to do the latter,I may even have to sit for an entrance exam in that particular country or something. Right?thanks..... it is illuminating, the very fact that at this late stage, they are still accepting fresh applications..... This post has been edited by cherrychapstick92: Feb 6 2012, 12:28 PM |

If I intend to do the latter,I may even have to sit for an entrance exam in that particular country or something. Right? thanks for your candour.....while bbb is the minimum, the cut off is higher than that for many years.....this issue about recognition of professional qualifications has been discussed in this and other threads extensively in the past....in a nutshell, countries do not recognise degrees if they think the quality of graduates are not even and consistent, due to lax selection/poor teaching/lax asessments.....if you allow me equal candour, abb will NOT get you any place in uk/oz med schools.......therefore they view any med schools taking in such students with suspicion.... be very clear about this....the imu mbbs is only recognised in msia and sri lanka..........therefore you CANNOT register and hence cannot work in any other countries.....including singapore.... if you still want to, then there will usually be some exams you will have to take and pass, to make you registrable....the process is long, difficult and expensive, and few would bother.....so realistically, you will be tying yourself to msia, if you continue.....the 'go abroad' option is absent.......it is NOT something you can decide later..... if you want to keep that option open, you will need to have a qualification that is more widely recognised.....hence the popularity of the pms stream....
