QUOTE(kjin @ May 3 2007, 09:24 AM) 400d af motor mar you can use all the lens you want do you wanna use manual focus? if it's no prob then go for d40x more focus points, but i doubt that's a strong point, but useful but if you can afford, go nikon d80 oh btw, it's just a humble opinion from a nikon user Just curious, how many popular lenses cannot be used on d40/d40x.., the 50mm f/1.8 cannot right? How about those popular 3rd party lenses? Tamron 28-75 f/2.8?

the lens compatibility is my main concern now, after a brief consideration i think i'll go for Canon still Added on May 3, 2007, 5:09 pmQUOTE(lvyk @ May 2 2007, 10:05 PM) Here are some of the example shots on USTC comparing 400D & D40.. My friend D40 Picture Setting is Normal. 35mm f5.6 1/60 ISO800 EV+0 My 400D Picture Setting is Standard - Saturation +1. 55mm f5.6 1/60 ISO800 EV+0.7 What I like about Nikon D40 1. Colour (Maybe Canon can set like Nikon's?) 2. How they display the information of your pictures when you review 3. Nice Interface 4. Auto ISO (I'm not sure others find this useful or not) 5. Battery more power (1000 [D40] compare to 720mAh [400D]) 6. Better Kit Lens??? Correct me if I'm wrong... And hopes this help... http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/modern-exposure.htmhttp://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/users...hooting.htm#isohttp://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/users...s-custom.htm#10Edited... left is D40 And right Is 400D. Right click on the picture and save the picture on ur Desktop. Then Right Click on the picture > click Properties > Summary > Advanced. All the picture details there. also the camera Model.
I also consider to take 400D, 30D ANd D80. At last i bought D80 And i love using it now. hehehe

Correct me if I'm wrong... From my experience on D40 and 400D... The D40 metering temps to be over expose abit compare to my 400D... As you can see the exposure on the 2 pictures are more or less the same... The pics are just for reference on the colour only... No meaning to compare that Nikon or Canon is better... Peace... HHHmmm, lets say in this way... 400D +0.7EV will produce the exposure nearly like D40 +0 EV... Or like clemong_888 said under than D40's +0 EV... But that's a 35mm (D40) vs 55mm (400D). Focal length, shooting angles and other settings are differing as well... So don't take the comparison seriously... I post it for reference only...

i also newbie into DSLR and considering both models.. (D40x vs 400D, RM2500 vs RM2700 respectively)
until now still undecided which one to buy...
reason to go for D40x: 1. released on March 07, i assume new technology always better? 2. price lower 3. heard that nikkor all are AF-S lenses in future?? 4. or shall i get D40 only? do i need 10MP if i seldom develop my pic?
reason to go for 400D: 1. few of my frens using canon, so can always borrow better lenses from them? hehe 2. more focus point, is it better?? 3. more features? i think la..
so, any more comments or recommedation can give to me?
p/s: what is the best price for D40x vs 400D in KL? (kit lens + 2GB card + bag)

QUOTE(hsienming @ May 4 2007, 02:37 PM) apa la how can compare like this settings all diffrent how can u hike up the EV on the canon to +0.7 and the nikon is +0 Yup. We need to fix both camera's metering type (eg. spot or matrix/evaluative) and at 0 EV to see which cam's metering is more accurate. But basically we can tell that by hiking up the Canon's exposure, the 400D tends to underexpose. Also, the White Balance does not tally for both pictures. The 400D photo seems to be on the cold side (which may be correct, but is not as lively as the D40 picture). Saturation also should be the same for both cams. The cam with +1 saturation will almost always come up with more lively colours which may or may not be truthful to the actual scene... but the scene as reproduced as a photo is subject to the photographer's own tasteful interpretation. But funny that the Canon's pic even with +1 colour saturation isn't as lively as the D40's... but then again each manufacturer has its own definition of what is 0 saturation level. how about DOF preview button? AFAIK Canon 400D has this feature but not D40/D40x. Is that really important to have DOF preview button if i'm more into potrait photography?
