obviously 400D will have the upper hand since you're like comparing a lower end model with a mid end model.

Both the 400D and D40x is entry level DSLR. Its more about ur budget, if you can afford either those, why not? I believe both of these are great entry level DSLR. smile.gif

I don't think that the 400D is the entry level DSLR, in terms of pricing I guess its quite close but the D40x is still cheaper. Does the D40x have the build-in body focusing or else that might prove to be a problem especially when using non-AFS lenses for the D40x.

400D is entry level.

pros of d40x over 400d

-better noise performace
-better awb
-better color reproduction(this is fairly objective)
-sd card?

cons

-no af with non af-s lenses..which means it shuts u out from some cheap good 3rd party lenses..
-less af points.

hard to say, there's no right and wrong here. if u understand technical jargons, reading reviews will help you alot. also, try out the cam before buying it. feel it, touch it, play with it and find out which suits you more.

also,ask yourself,

why do u want a dslr? (u said portraits and landscapes)

then i suggest u go for body only and get a 50mm with another wide angle lens. true u, will not have autofocus for 50mm in d40x but it's not tht hard to learn manual focus.

how for are you willing to upgrade?

will u still be using the camera years from now? if yes, the system does matter.

i can't make a conclusion only you yourself can make biggrin.gif cheers, hope it helps.

hmmm
like that try to take ur mind off the two cameras 1st
try to focus on - which type n kind of lenses you would want to have
now n near future

dont bother bout cam or brand, just the type of lense,
dont explore about cam specs, but lense specs, purpose of lense n all

then only u compare, whether D40x can use those lenses, or not
if D40x can, buy D40x,
if it cant, then 400D

IMHO unless if u serious with NEF/RAW pics, a D40x is a bang for buck entry level dslr for that. If you only concern about taking better pics in JPEG, i believe a D40 will do fine.

Both 400D and D40 has wide range of lens available, but do note that since D40 & D40X dont have AF, forget about getting Nikkor's older lens, but wont harm if u just start DSLR photography with the wide range of new lens suited for D40 & D40X.

Conclusion? Either go to the Evil side or the Dark side brows.gif (playing darth vader theme, so u know which want i going to recommend) tongue.gif
