Both the 400D and D40x is entry level DSLR. Its more about ur budget, if you can afford either those, why not? I believe both of these are great entry level DSLR.

IMHO unless if u serious with NEF/RAW pics, a D40x is a bang for buck entry level dslr for that. If you only concern about taking better pics in JPEG, i believe a D40 will do fine.
Both 400D and D40 has wide range of lens available, but do note that since D40 & D40X dont have AF, forget about getting Nikkor's older lens, but wont harm if u just start DSLR photography with the wide range of new lens suited for D40 & D40X.
