Thanks! I'm quite surprised that you got the wireless router for RM150 only whereas the linksys I saw is RM200. Maybe the linksys comes with a built in adsl modem or something.
Or maybe the extra antenna is worth RM50? haha quite unlikely.

Back to the xps, what do you guys use to wipe the front casing of the laptop? The "fingerprint magnet" place.Coz mine has quite a lot of smudges on it.Not sure if I should use a normal wet cloth or any special cloth?

And for wiping the lcd screen, what do you guys recommend?
*
I think the Linksys's a bit more expensive at RM180++ in LY, but it's the one with the ADSL modem build in... But I'm happy with the Belkin, other then the fact that it gets really hot after a day of use.... People with wifi routers, is this normal?

For me, I'm using 3M's Scotch-Brite for the screen and other general wiping, followed up with the Camera Lens version of the Scotch-Brite (my bro got it for free from his Uni), for final wiping of the screen... Just wet the cloth with a litttttttttttttttttle water, just to get stains out, and wipe dry... icon_rolleyes.gif

Hey guys, just bought my XPS back in March.

Back then, everything is normal until recently, the CPU & GPU has been very hot. It runs consistently on 80C +- degrees. If you play games (well, just FIFA07), the GPU can goes up to 100C. The GPU will decrease the clock speed at this temp and everything will look like slide show. Previously, everything runs smooth, i even played Half Life 2: Episode 1 smoothly.

After much thought, i'm wondering if one of the fans is slower than it should be.
1st fan - around 4000rpm
2nd fan - around 950rpm

Anybody has any idea what happen? What's your temp while doing normal daily tasks?

Right now, 40-50C seems luxury to me.

I have 4 units of 1210 XPS running in my company. So far none of them have any issues. What I don't like about it is that it gets really hot all the time. But then my XPS is on almost 23 hours of the day. Build is OK. You definately can't compare with HP/Compaq and other brands. The Insert key is anonying. I always hit it which typing. Dunno why can Dell keep their keys location consistent like HP/Compaq laptops.

Why don't you try calling them via their 1800 number and ask thier sales people? They are pretty friendly.

Normally when I start my programming work, my laptop will act like a hand warmer. The fan will start spinning will crazy and hot will be rushing out. This is very very normal for me. At time I don't darn to carry the laptop afraid of getting burned. rclxub.gif When playing games, the GPU will top at 90C overclocked. Of course, I have a laptop cooler at the bottom when doing this.

I just downloaded NHC.The latest version is compatible with Vista.I downloaded the bugfix for Dell version. And it works ok so far.

Hmm, it says that my battery wear level is 5%.Quite surprising leh since I usually use the ac adapter.Probably use it powered with battery only for less than 10 times since I got it.

I experienced that before, after updating the logitech webcam driver.

Control Panel - Sound

What do you see?

The Speakers/Headphones should be the default one.

There's another one, Digital Output Device. In my case, somehow that was set to default. So I removed it and the music can be heard again.

Call Dell. They should have a solution.

It wobbles? get a replacement or u r gonna regret it. Please replace it even it is not mine, i already felt annoyed by that. Let us know if anything

Hello, thanks derred for feeling my annoyance.

I called DELL Customer Service yesterday (Sunday) and they told me I'd be called by someone today. She called at lunch and told me that after speaking to her manager, she was going to replace my laptop with a new one. It's good but I'm obviously scared the new one might have software/internal problems. She said usually they just send someone to fix the problem but since my problem happened on the first day, they are giving me a new one.

So far, I've been playing around with my current DELL XPS M1210 and it seems ok. Nothing too wrong wth it. Except there was this once when the system was critically low in battery and I had to plug it to a power source to resume working on it and the sound wouldn't stop ... (the resume Vista sound..) so every few seconds it'd go... "brrring..." or whatever welcome sound it makes.

So we'll see what happens. They say they hope to send it this week so we'll see.

Hopefully, I'll get a perfect system that's not a lemon. I can't believe we have to be scared to get a new system. It's weird. Most people will feel confident about getting a new system but here I am, scared the new system might have other problems.

thank god i bought the xps before i found this column.... otherwise, i would just stick to vaio...

but neway, from my own personal experience, my unit is working fine (except for that one moment when my daughter gave it a stress test) and so far the support had been exemplary.. and the technician was also pretty knowledgeable about it (lucky me sweat.gif)

Do you think they'll give me a laptop that someone had problems with before or one that's fresh from the assembly line?

So worried and scared that they'll give me old parts or something. Or someone's reject.

I say get the RAM, you'll appreciate the performance increase... And do yourself a favour and get it from outside? 1 piece of 2 GB SODIMM is only about RM500 outside, how the heck is 1GB = RM800? Choke blood one (cekik darah)... rclxub.gif

You'll have to hack open the keyboard to get to the second RAM slot though, instructions included in manual... icon_rolleyes.gif

As long as you're buying RAM with the same speeds (aka, 533+533, 667+667), they should work fine... Even diff speed also would work, but they will dual channel at the slowest speed (533+667=533 dual channel)...

Or something like that... rolleyes.gif

Haha... Yeah, so much problems floating around... I'm just thankful that my XPS is just as quirky as most, without becoming a full fledged lemon... icon_rolleyes.gif

The M1210's a good design, actually, just that Dell needs to improve their quality assurance... And talking about VAIOs, the new generation seems about just as bad as (or even worst then) the XPS in terms of build quality... Don't get me started on the SZ-44... sweat.gif

But everything else above the SZ-44 (even the Made in China C series) seems well build to me... I wonder why?

What do you guys use to check the GPU temperature?

NHC only shows the CPU and Harddisk temp.
