QUOTE(nles @ Dec 29 2017, 12:34 AM) I'm going to Tokyo. the heatteach at uniqlo mostly long sleeve I saw It's hard to advise because different people have different cold tolerances. For example for me if the temperature is around -5 nights and 0 daytime I won't even bother with any gloves, headgear or any base (heattech) layers, just a t shirt, vest and jacket. Whereas at same temperature my wife need to wear base layers. And my FIL need to wrap up thick thick like bakzhang. |

QUOTE(ch1ck3n @ Dec 31 2017, 06:46 PM) BIC Camera has good selection of whiskys. thanks for your info, very useful to meevery bic has different stock level, so some might have some might not. Basically japanese whisky like hibiki and yamazaki is being bought off as soon as it hits shelves by all the tourists. I got myself a glenfarclas 21 years for 10,000 yen in BIC. Which is actually a good price. Do let me know if u have quota to help me carry some back thank you in advance if you can. lol. sorry, my luggage sure very full this time, too many thing need buy.... |

QUOTE(royalz @ Dec 29 2017, 12:03 PM) hi guys...will be going Japan April 2018 (first time) It doesn't matter whether you stay all 5 nights in Osaka and do daily trip to Kyoto, or 2 nights in Kyoto/ 3 nights in Osaka. Like you said, the distance is not far. This is dependent on individual preference and whether you have a big group. If there's a lot of you including the elderly/ children, will suggest to stay put in 1 location to minimize moving around with luggage. But this is just my 2 cents. I will be going Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Nara - Tokyo 1) Will it be better to stay in Kyoto and Osaka or do day trip from Osaka daily? will be in Osaka 3 nights and Kyoto 2 nights. The thought of moving luggage from one place to another and thinking where I can store them if cannot check in accommodation early ? I checked Kyoto and Osaka is 30 mins apart so if I do day trip from Osaka-Kyoto daily will be 1 hour just for travelling. Which accomodation plan will be better? a. Stay 2 nights kyoto then 3 nights osaka b. Stay all 5 nights in Osaka 2) Plan to purchase JR Pass 7 days + Osaka Amazing Pass. Are there any better/cheaper option? Worth to get Osaka Amazing pass since I already have JR Pass? Also putting these two passes into consideration for point number 1. Thanks guys. QUOTE(royalz @ Dec 29 2017, 12:55 PM) Bought already...my current itinerary below Day 10: If you're going Shinjuku Gyoen, be prepared to spend 2-3 hours there. That's easily 1/2 day gone; so I doubt you're able to do any morning shopping. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Day 12: Tokyo Malaysia Check opening hours of Shibuya 109. Malls in Japan close pretty early eg. 8pm or earlier, unlike Malaysia's operating hours. QUOTE(PluEitaro @ Dec 31 2017, 02:07 PM) Guys, I've never been to Japan Maybe you can share if there's any specific meal you're looking for (eg. Kobe Beef). There's a highly recommended restaurant by the Japanese. Maybe you can look for more info before deciding - Premium Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi: http://japanrestaurant.net/jr/?a_type=650-2&lang=en https://www.tripadvisor.jp/Restaurant_Revie...ture_Kinki.html QUOTE(tohff7 @ Jan 1 2018, 07:24 PM) anybody got any recommendation for hotel/ryokan in Takayama? Stayed in K's House Takayama when I was there, and had a good stay. The room and bathroom isn't spacious, but it's decent. There's also a kitchen where you can cook, use their fridge facility and a dining area with TV. While airbnb ain't a bad choice but it's usually more value for bigger groups of 3-4 pax and above. You may want to check out both Hotel and AirBnB price & facilities before deciding. I think better to nail down which area of Tokyo u want to visit. Cause like from asakusa to harujuku will be a very long train ride, which will eat in to your timing. For Gotemba, if you are in to branded goods shopping. Do some minimal homework of what you are looking for and then you will know if it is worth it or not. i just got back from Japan, the fact that now Yen is cheaper , and there is Tax Free shopping at Gotemba. There are really good buys. |

QUOTE(sweet_pez @ Jan 2 2018, 09:47 AM) How many nights? Is it a quick stopover or you'll be staying for several days there? My original plan is to stay 2 days on 14-15 Apr for the Spring festival. But it looks quite impossible now with all accomodations fully booked. So, I'm in the midst of re-adjusting my itinerary and looking for alternative suggestion. For that leg, it is supposed to be Tokyo --> Kanazawa --> Gokayama/Shirakawago --> Takayama --> Kurobe Alpine Route --->Nagano/Tokyo.Stayed in K's House Takayama when I was there, and had a good stay. The room and bathroom isn't spacious, but it's decent. There's also a kitchen where you can cook, use their fridge facility and a dining area with TV. Some alternatives that I'm considering 1) Stay a night in Takayama on 13 April, enjoy the festival in 14th and take train out in the evening to Toyama. Stay the night in Toyama (14th) and ready for Kurobe Alpine Route on 15th. Staying a night in Toyama seems better than my original plan because trains departing Takayama to Toyama is less frequent (earliest train is 5.30, next is 7.40 and reach Toyama 8am and 10am respectively) 2) I also has the option to stay in a ryokan/hotel in Takayama for 12-13 Apr night, but was wondering if it's worth it. Without the festival, I think Takayama can be covered with just a night stay? Also thinking whether i should spend additional on ryokan if i'll be out most of the time. 3) Still researching other nearby places like Gero and Hida Furukawa, but of course, accommodation is quite heavily booked as well Also, are there any other interesting places to visit as well along the Hokuriku Shinkansen line? I looked at Kurobe Gorge but the route only open in May. |

Depends on what time you arrive in Takayama on 13th, or how much time you have. Wished I had at least 1 full day in Takayama to explore. If you have a full day minus the festival, it's quite sufficient to cover the key attractions. Gero is more popular for its Onsen; not sure about Furukawa. There's nothing much you can do around that time coz it gets dark early. Will suggest to do a 3 days 2 nights in Takayama so that it's less rushed. At least on Day 2 you have a full day to enjoy, then checkout on 3rd day.Starting early in Kanazawa, then travel to Gokayama/Shirakawago, then onwards to Takayama - I suppose I'll reach Takayama around evening? |
