I thought about where this thread goes for a bit. In arts and design or in here. Although HDR relies on the photographs as the base material, most of the magic happens in post production, which can change a picture significantly. Oh well, if someone decides to move this thread somewhere else, no matter biggrin.gif

Alright, First off, what is HDR?

...

You know what, I suck at explaining, I'll point you in the direction of an excellent guide.

The guide.

And I quote..
QUOTE
HDR means 'High Dynamic Range'. Using software like Photomatix you can create images with a more detail in the highlights and shadows than you can with a normal photo from todays digital cameras. Its similar to the old technique of exposure blending. Taking one photo for the sky and one for the ground, then merging them both together in Photoshop. HDR takes it a step further by increase the amount of detail in the image and allows you to create some unique photos. You can use it carefully to create natural looking photos or you can use it creatively to create atmospheric and emotive photos. The choice is yours as to how you process the end result.

To make HDR photos, you need a camera which can either shoot RAW pictures (eg; .tiff files) or take bracketed shots (eg; -2ev, 0ev, +2ev). Also, you'll need either Adobe Photoshop or Photomatix for the actual magic to happen. Personally, I prefer photomatix because the colours are alot stronger compared to photoshop. And it's alot easier.

Again, I'm lazy to explain how to do it, the guide tells you all you need to know.

That said, compared with traditional photography, it seems a little bit like cheating, but it's so damn fun.

So, some of my attempts at HDR can be found here;

Very nice, Radical. Personally, I think pictures with cloudy skies benefit most from HDR techniques. I've tried making HDR's without the sky, but that mostly turned out pretty awful for some reason.

Thanks man!

yeah same here, it really does wonders on the skies, and architecture photography, it brings out those details in buildings smile.gif but sometimes details distracts the eye, so must play safe in those cases biggrin.gif

Thanks!

Hmm, i use it to enchance the skies's detail, make it look more "3D" like. Like the 1st pic in my previous post.

perhaps because it too/over detail?
or because of the colour?

for me HDR its a great technic...but as you said..sometimes it become so over and dizzy(perhaps?)..

whatever is it..HDR still my favourite technic..

I tried every possible angle to avoid the cable.. The only way is to get out of the house and walk a lil bit.. I guess I was lazy...

Dramatic in sense that more contrast? Grey clouds and blue clouds? Will keep that in mind.. Thanks..

That's the problem with you, don't know never ask. When do wrong liao say others kid. The fact that you don't know how to use those softwares and then get frustrated and then calling other ppl names just because you didn't learn how to use it is just plain ironically lame. smile.gif

If you don't like it. Just say you don't. there's no need to go around indirectly claiming other people's pics not ori or ori. I always knew your stay in here won't turn out good anyway so no offense. rolleyes.gif

I'm not waging a war about editing your pics in software or not. I'm saying this on behalf of those who uses software to make their pics nicer. Even various traditional darkroom techniques are just similar to some of the functions in photoshop.

Ori shooting or not. If your composition salah, then it won't turn out good either.

oh! you like it ! well i find photomatix is quite easy to use , i mean just for HDR! i don't know how to use photoshop for HDR yet! anyway i notice detail is loss a bit, and the tone mapping adjustment is abit tricky!
but this picture i do HDR with just one shoot!
maybe next time i will shoot in raw , so can play with the +2/-2 exposure compensation!

Yeah its a good try happy.gif

Photomatix HDR toning is much easier than photoshop's. I don't like photoshop's 1 haha... not much control to me. Sometimes detail lost inevitable. 1 shoot of jpeg? o_O

dude, and 3 raw is better than 1 brows.gif get what i mean? biggrin.gif

sweat.gif sweat.gif I was about to ask how can u get HDR of a guy jumping when u're supposed to combine 5 pictures lol ...

Anyways Radical .. 1 question here ... 2 case .. can u tell me will the result be same or not ar ? Everything same .. same composition , same camera , everything same ( except for the shutter speed of coz .. to take the 5 pictures ) :

1) -2ev -1ev 0ev 1ev 2ev
2) -4ev -2ev 0ev 2ev 4ev

Will the result come out the same ?

for your 1st question. Use 1 RAW. That's all i can say. Then go to photomatix > automate > single file conversion > tick "from low to high dynamic range" with radiance rgb. Then look for your file. then click ok.

Hmmm... Definitely will be different. If im not wrong, pic two will be darker at some areas. while pic 1 will have a more balanced shot. But still i cant be completely sure. Why not take a time out experiment it yourself? biggrin.gif

But' ill go for method 1. Then bring to photoshop for further processing tongue.gif

Good luck. smile.gif

Not very professional.
I used the guide setting and came out this. Took this in front of my house.
Using my old Canon G2 with Photomatix as it is easier than photoshop.
Like this kind of picture a lot. Need todo more research and explore in the setting to make the picture look more artistic.

my first attempt on HDR.

#1 The original image taken in RAW

converted to TIFF at +2 and -2 EV respectively and using Photomatix to generate the HDR. Map tonned, saved in JPEG 8-bit and here's the final result:

haha for infrared photography, here's some examples:
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/56038614/
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/32069871/
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/31430973/
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/49517972/
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/57123720/
(C)Gilad Benari

its pretty simple. just go and get yourself an infrared filter like hoya R72. 1st make sure your camera is infrared sensitive.

to determine that u need to do a test, here's how:

take your remote, astro's remote will do.

point it to your camera and press and hold a button.

then snap a pic.

If the pic comes out with a white lightin show inside the picture then ur camera is infrared sensitive.

hope my words are clear enough smile.gif

Im experimenting on infrared photography too but somehow i cant get the results like this fella's 1. He's damn good biggrin.gif

So... all in all... imagine doing HDR with infrared. I think the results will be awesome! biggrin.gif

actually HDR doesnt need to be "surreal". It's all about getting the perfect exposure by utilizing the most dynamic range smile.gif

R a D ! c 4 L is right. HDR is all about getting the perfect exposure IMO. HDR can help you to 'modify' the place where it's too dark or too bright..

HDR doesnt mean need to be fancy in the frame. smile.gif

Hope you all enjoy. interesting tread, i love it biggrin.gif

i think if you set your digital camera on a tripod, set exposure manually one by one, then later you can merge them all using photo matix too, but i don't know lar cuz i never tried with my digi, try and see, don't forget to show us the result !

HDR is software base, any camera shall do, as long as you can set different exposure compensation. Even without it, you can do it in PS by using layer and layer mask.

Hoongji, am I looking at 3D images without 3D glasses? Just joking. You don't necessary have to merge 2 photos to create HDR, try it with a single photo.

my hand was shaking when i took those pics. and i think those 3D effects were from my camera (canon S3IS). i feel that this cam creates alot of chromatic thingy (am i correct with the term?).

I tried handheld for this HDR below, result? Failed failed failed hahaha, train better arms first then perhaps i can attempt HDR without tripod
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i16/simm..._6c97613d21.jpg
Both pics are not taken in RAW but JPEG, RAW gives better result but the processing time too long..no patience lar

not bad leh biggrin.gif just the 1st shot the color too saturated for my taste. As for the 2nd, well you seem to know the problem yourself happy.gif

Which version of Photomatix are you all using? I tried using version 1.2.1 and when I generate out the HDR image, the image looks like that is combined. When I save the image, it ends up being like a normal picture rclxub.gif

Once I generated the HDR image, then before I save it, I went to the menu, HDR -> Tone Mapping.

But once in the Tone Mapping menu, the preview image doesn't even turn out like the HDR image generated.

You have to tweak the sliders to get the effect you wanted. What kind of HDR you're looking for? An exaggerated one or a more natural one? Both can be done in Photomatix. And once u brought the generated HDR image to tone mapping, its always different than what you see before.

the best would be at least 5 shots.

i'll do auto bracketing coz i lazy to manual bracket.

but the correct way to cover the whole range would be spot meter the brightest and darkest location, then calculate how much stop it differ totally, and shoot with +1stop every shot from lowest exposure

Questions here:

Does shooting in RAW and in 3 extreme exposures will be any difference in making a HDR?

Which one is better or easier to make?

Probably not HDR at all because I just editing a Jpg file to get 3 different version and combined them together with photomatix.
GOt bored and feel like trying out how the program work.
Anyway how can I get the watermark disappear?

And perhaps anyone with a step to step noobie guide on doing different kind of frames and adding the signature?

hi..erm.. no, none of them,

i just photoshop edit the an overexposed photo.

it was like this, i wanna open long shutter for the waterfall, but i dun have any ND filters, and the sun is bright at that moment,
aperture already to the smallest, thus still overexposed,
i use photoshop to edit the levels and curves.. it turns out like this..haha sweat.gif sweat.gif

it's very simple
you shot 3 shots : 1 normal, 1under, and 1 over exposed.
or you can shot 1 file Raw with right exposed then edit exposed to 1 under and one over and export to 3 file jpeg
then you need a software
i'm using Photomatix Pro 2.5.3, if you want that soft, PM me (this forum is not allowed to post crack, right ?)

it is RAW format, ie without compression. Just shot 1 photo with accurate exposure, then adjust to -2EV under and +2EV over and combine those 3 files using Photomatix

if you're shooting moving objects, that one exposure would also help to eliminate movements so you'll have a better finished product,,,

Take the lowest exposure , Normal Exposure , then Highest Exposure of the same scene to get the same Scene but different exposure... those EV-2 EV+2,etc..

Or take A single picture by RAW...then create 3 diff post processing again the exposure.

Then use application to merge them. Adobe CS3 , Photomatrix. etc.

I dont think so, cause the color doesn't seem to appear towards dynamic range output.

I think HDR pictures very contrasty and the saturation is very distinct.

did you use any software?

HDR shots need to be done through post processing. Not just straight from camera.

Usually people use Photomatix or Photoshop's builtin feature.

Its a bit over saturated and watch out for the ghosting effects. If got moving subjects, best use one RAW file rather than three.

Good try though smile.gif

you should tell them off. I've had this experience before. And I hate it when they thought they know better, the fact is thats what you want not what they want. mad.gif

make sure nx time u go and print you tell them no matter what no to touch your stuffs. Period.

is your color profile smile.gif in photoshop. go to edit > convert to profile. Check your color profile at "source space", if its non other than "sRGB IEC61966-2.1", then what ever you upload to the internet would have lost its colors. Same thing goes to when u wanna set this certain file as wall paper. If its not "sRGB IEC61966-2.1", then go to "destination space", select "sRGB IEC61966-2.1". And then save your file. This should do the trick.

The reason why because the internet and our monitor is calibrated to see colors from sRGB instead of other color profile.

Here's the source: Read on!

don blame it on windows. it has nothing to do with it. smile.gif all you need is to experiment more and learn, use google to search for better tips, sometimes asking around here is not enough.

for your 1st question.

Good luck. smile.gif

have you tone mapped the .hdr file? You have to tone map the files 1st then only convert them to .tif so that you can view them or further enhance them.

guys..i was wondering...if i took a single file with +1 exposure..and i added another 2 by PS(increase2 n decrease2 using the base file)...when im adding file using photomatix...i shd put as +2 , 0 , -2? or +3 , 1 , -3 ??
*
An easier way is to use the automatic single file conversion in Photomatix.
Automate > Single File Conversion > RAW file into .hdr
After that just open that .hdr file and tone map it. blush.gif
Anyways here's mine. Taken from inside a car window, so it has a slight bluish cast. sweat.gif

Normally HDR is used for pictures with more contrast to bring out the details.
From your picture it's hard to see the "HDR-ness" of the picture. Also, you bumped the hues and saturation too high. The whole picture has a greenish cast around it sweat.gif
But then again, nice try wink.gif

have you tone mapped the .hdr file? You have to tone map the files 1st then only convert them to .tif so that you can view them or further enhance them.
*
but that one have to select at least 2 files which are the same but i don have it. you guys said can use single RAW file to do it right? can tell me how to do it again? sad.gif

One way is to save 2 different HDR images then blend them together in PS.
If you took the 3 shots instead of a single RAW conversion, I think the noise problem wouldnt be as bad. laugh.gif
I just tweak the sliders so that minimal noise comes out, then use CS3 to brush away the noise. nod.gif

hmmm ok, the other way to do this is, use a RAW converter, then convert your files into 3 diff exposure values, +2, 0, -2. Then use photomatix to merge them and then tone map it. Try this.

Not necessarily. You can still produce vibrant HDR using JPEGs. It's just that some (if not most) photographers prefer to shoot in RAW format (including me).

Sametime replied. Cool..anyway, you can get a decent HDR with 3 different exposure (2 or 1 stop) JPEGs. I read somewhere, you can get more detailed HDR with 5 JPEGs/RAWs. 2 stop each is even better.

Well, basically it need 3 frames of different of exposure is enough to produce a good HDR right.

Well, how about B&W HDR,still need 3 shots of different exposures to produce more details?

You'd still need different exposures to get the best out of the HDR image.
When we talk about the dynamic range of the picture, we do not mean the colour of the pixels, we only refer to the difference between the brightest and dimmest pixels aka the contrast of the picture.
Therefore you'd still optimally need various exposures to give the maximum dynamic range. =D

Take the exact photo using 3 different exposures.
Use tripod only IF you are using a very slow shutter speed.

Set you AEB to -2,0,+2

Shoot in RAW format better.(for me)

Then use photomatix to make HDR.

Dat one is a matter of taste lah. Some people like strong (vivid sony/nikon), some like muted (neutral canon). biggrin.gif You can slide the "effects" and "saturation" slider until you like what you see. Or can try the tone compression option. More photo like dat one. thumbup.gif

Thank you Kelvin. nod.gif I didn't think I gained further dynamic range from original photo. Basically did a lazy man's method of PP. Let the HDR software PP for me instead of putting in Gimp and cracking my head. icon_idea.gif And yeah, my taste is not towards the trippy saturated HDR color effects that most people here like. shocking.gif shakehead.gif

1. take 3 pictures of the same thing. 1st pic make sure good exposure. 2nd pic u take maybe +1 stop, then the 3rd -1 stop.
2. open photoshop, File > automate > Merge as HDR. open the 3 pictures juz now n play with the sliders ;p

i think creating the HDR process is the easy part...juz dont oversaturate n beware for the halo effect (white glowing outline) like A LOT of 'HDR' pics here +_+ HDR technique is supposed to create a better picture where u dont lose details in shadows and highlights! it's supposed to look like its taken by only one exposure. HDR can make stunning images, but always midused for contrasty 'clown vomit' (i forgot where i read that phrase heheh)

The model won't be sharp right ... I don't think humans can sit absolutely still for more than 30 secs. That's why exposure slower than 1/15 usually reserved for landscape and scenery,

i think this would be a nice shot if u didnt include the model hehehe. yes the face isnt sharp (although i love the color of the jeans). or maybe have the model face away from the camera? so u'll still have a 'character' but she doesnt have to freeze her face for so long tongue.gif

May I know is it possible to make HDR photo of night scenes? Since if you take multiple shots, each shot will be different since the streets won't stay constant to reproduce the exact same photo as the previous in different setting.

Added on August 8, 2010, 9:12 pmAlso may I know do many movies utilizes HDR technique especially on the backgrounds coz they look like 3D generated images but i know they are real stuff.

For example cockpit in Stealth, control room in Avatar.

Hi guys,

I am fan of HDR photography, and was wondering how do u know how much wide to bracket your shots ? E.g. If u see a scene, how to u know weather to set 1/3 EV brakets or 1EV brakets or maybe even 2EV brakets ?

Thanking in advance and Happy ner year !n
