Really love D80. My GF and I loves photography eventhough we are newbie. Wanted to buy D80 but my GF say very very heavy for her. Now with 18-200 VR attached to D40 also she said very heavy.

Sigh cannot buy now. Hahahaha

Wait till she says, " Sayang, why D40 cannot do this and cannot do that" and " Sayang why 50mm f/1.8 have to focus manually ler, the green dot so hard to stay stagnant". Hahahaha

Then only I poison her for D80. " Darling, D80 can do this and that, and can Auto Focus on ur favorite 50mm f/1.8. " Hahahaahah

By the meantime, D40 is the best solution.

seriously, the D40 thread was started AFAIK for newbies who are interested to know about the pros and cons of D40.

really depends on what u're shooting. i might prefer a 12-24 + 70-200. anything in the middle can be covered unless u're working from a stationary pt.

the approximate number is stated on the screen, why do u need to check? further, it depends on how you use the camera and the lens you are using. if you are using VR lens, it will consume more power.

That is the approximate based on your memory card size.

I wanna know based on how many shots vs battery time.

I know it's case by case basis, so, I would like to know based on your own shooting styles and modes how many shots on a fully charged d80 can take.

Added on April 29, 2007, 12:45 pmHere are some of my first macro shots with kit lens.

Well, to be honest, not really macro cause i don't have macro lens. But maybe i should put it as "close ups". Just wanna see D80's color output.

I choose to shoot in vivid color mode.

a camera is not meant to be left from harm's way. i would take it anywhere. it's gonna spoil or get outdated one day so might as well just make full use of it.

and a lil sea water wont hurt it at all..

You can upload photos using the [img][/img] tagging.

I normally use http://imageshack.us/ because it automatically makes [img] tags for forum uploading. You don't need to register to use.

You can also use http://photobucket.com/ This site needs you to register to upload.

Example:

You should have a good look at http://www.rideau-info.com/photos/mythdpi.html

read it thoroughly.

QUOTE
The size of a digital photo is measured in pixels (the smallest colour component in a photo). The two photos above are exactly the same size, 300 pixels in width by 225 in height, and both have been saved at 25% JPEG compression. Even though their DPI has been set to radically different values, the photos are identical in quality (the pixels don't change). So, what is DPI and why are so many people hung up about it?

DPI is a measure of how a image is printed to a medium such as paper (or conversely, scanned from paper). Many software programs call DPI a measure of "resolution" which leads to more confusion since it is the resolution of the printed output, not anything to do with the "resolution" of the digital image. In fact the software programs that use this setting are really just doing so because they lack WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) output. If you do use WYSIWYG software such as most word processing, desk top publishing or graphics programs such as Corel Draw, then DPI is really a meaningless figure - the quality of output will be determined by the pixel size of the original image, the paper dimensions you have chosen to print the image (i.e. 4" x 6") and the quality of the printer.

There is no doubt the D80 is a good DSLR.

But at the end of the day, it's whether you can afford it and what is your budget to start DSLR.

Having a DSLR can be an investment or just moneyflies.gif

1.4 is way overbudget.

Would this lens be good for indoors like for family dinner shots and also maybe at small events/gatherings?

The only downside is that there isn't zoom isn't it?

If i want a prime with zoom, it'd cost a bomb right? like the 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR.

70-200 not a prime. And dun get 70-200 f2.8 if u dun need to.

50mm is the godlike lens for portrait.

If u want small events/gathering, family etc..get Tamron 17-50

RM300-400, either 50mm prime or 70-300G only. lol

seems like everyone also interested in 18-200VR. I rather opt for Tamron 18-250.

I invested in a compact tripod but can go up to 40 inches tall. When compact it's 8.25 inches. It's very convenient for traveling because of it's size and weight.

I bought it from here http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/437322 very fast and reliable seller.

I ordered yesterday and it arrived this afternoon. And he is located in Kota Kinabalu.

He sent yesterday afternoon. So fast reach!

RM10 for poslaju. So actually RM70.

Yes. It is very strong and stable.

The brand is TAKARA, and apparently it's Made in Japan but not stated on the box. The box only states OSAKA, JAPAN but probably Made in China product.

Nikon D80 is not made in Japan as far as I know, its from thailand. I ask the dealer in Tokyo when I bought my D80 here, he said only high-end DSLR only produce in Japan.

You bought your D80 in tokyo or here?

MB-D80 very expensive lor..... Rm450+ right?

My cam already damn heavy with sb-600 and body. Can't imagine the weight with the battery grip.

I use auto WB for my shoes.

I bouced my flash up towards the ceiling with my diffuser on it.

Hehe, photography has now become part of healthy lifestyle as it actually keeps us fit!

During my previous event in college, I was the only photographer, I had to run here and there to cover the event.

Added on May 30, 2007, 8:09 pmI would like to ask, would I be able to shoot the Japan GT race cars racing using my kit lens?

What is the technique? What settings to use?

I am going for in on the 24th of June, I got grandstand tickets.

yeah bro.. long time didn't meet u huh..

Taking photos for event in our college is difficult if you don't have flash (llike me), but for you now is easier..
next time, try to get another photographer to help you to cover the whole event. It really usefull, you won't miss any moment. thumbup.gif (If you saw me last time, I did that)

Well, they sell cause they don't need it anymore? Or they prefer not to have it? Every individual is different. icon_idea.gif

There are people selling in http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/ftz/index.php?page=1 but kinda pricey.

Where got such thing as bigger grip? laugh.gif For d80 there is only the original nikon grip. Unlike the d70/s there was 3rd party grips.

You will need an exif reader.

I use IrfanView to view my shutter count with the EXIF Plugin.

I have uploaded both files here.

Try using them.

First install Irfanview then later put the exif.dll file into your Irfanview Plugins folder.

Here's a screenshot on how to use the EXIF reader.

Please download (400kb) http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/6954/cl...rd01exifrk6.jpg

1st and 2nd pic compo can improve. 3, 4 (5) are good. You can control the bokeh quite well with just kit lense. Like them.

It's not out of shape, but it may be a lil pixelated if you're using big monitors. Resizing is just a matter of reducing the pixels, but the aspect ration should still be the same.

IMHO, it's up to your preference.

I have been following http://www.flickr.com/groups/d80/discuss/ and I just found out that our D80 tend to overexpose when using Matrix Metering. Users of older D series (50/70/70s) are complaining about this problem. Much of them would use Matrix and tone down their EV or Use center weighted metering.

Buttons on the Professional shade are aligned with your camera, to reduce the wear and tear on delicate parts and components. Color and design matches your camera model.

QUOTE
The Digital SLR Standard is our most popular model, and simply snaps on to the back of the most popular models of Digital SLR camera. Optical clear glass to protect your camera's screen is included, and the hard impact plastic design when the shade is in the closed position leaves less chance of scratching or breaking your display. The simple pop-up design allows for easy opening to block the glare. Color and design matches your camera model.

I am enquiring on the price for bulk.

However, price per item is around RM165 for pro version (protects buttons as well) and RM140 for normal version (just screen)

Anyone interested?

I dont see the point of having the hood for the D80 since there's already the plastic screen protector. The hood is very troublesome if you preview your shots everytime...you have to close the hood, take a pic, open it up to view. If you need to shade the sun, just use your hand or wear a cap out.

I don't think it's is commonly found in M'sia. Cause the original nikon one is fairly cheap.

I have seen it on ebay though.

Well, he sent using Pos Ekspress. He sent on Monday evening. Supposed to get by today.

I check online and call pos malaysia, can't track the item.

I contacted seller, he say wait a few more days. He claims that he also bought a lens from cheras to wangsa maju, took him 6 days to reach by Pos Laju.

I think the longest I waited for a posjalu item was like 3 days.

Should I ask for my box?

Update: Contacted seller. He said no box one.

I don't like the fact that he didn't mention to me.

Oh, I mistakenly thought he got 3 lenses.

But still, I think you've spent a fortune on your new set right? Close to 10k?

That's about RM1213, extremely good buy for SB800!

And only RM45 for the remote!

Wah, Nikon stuff in china so cheap.

Wonder how much lenses would cost.

Today I went to Key Color Mid Valley Megamall and asked for the price for 50mm 1.8D and 18-200mm VR.

Both are RM380 and RM2500(cash) respectively.

use A mode 1st quite easy to master this mode actually for shooting still objects

F = small , blurs out the background

F = big , overall pic is quite sharp

To add on to that,

BIGGER f/stop no. means smaller aperture and less light would go into the sensor.

smaller f/stop no. means BIGGER aperture and MORE light would go into the sensor.

Wow.. thank you very much buddies... you guys are helpful. i will read through the link. but i find out that ..

if i take photo without flash at night(dinner under yellow light).. the photo is more soft and nicer.. but it is not clear due to the hand shake.
if i use flash to take the same photo. the photo seem like lost the reality. and seem like too sharp and de feeling is different. ..
Any solution for this situation? thank you for guilding me..

You will need an external flash and optimize the usage of flash bounce photography to mimic natural lighting.

Which shop offer RM350? Please share. notworthy.gif

Next time, mention the shop when got pricing info.

Don't just say price and never mention place.

Like me, i will say where I ask for the price.

Well, you can always cover wrap your flash with a white piece of paper.

This is to reduce the direct flash on your subject and reduce subject shadow. When you do this, you will need to step up your exposure compensation. With a white piece of 70grams A4, you would need to step up to about +2.0-2.3.

Body should cost roughly about RM3400 and the 18-200mm VR lens costs RM2500.

So total should be around RM5900.

I think the best option for you now, is the kit lens 18mm-125mm.

Other lenses cost a bomb, need above 1K.

Another cheap lens is 70mm-300mm g version.Only RM360++

Nikon lens has several types : (What I mean here is Nikon brand lens, not tamron, sigma, etc)

G type - no aperture ring. it means this lens only can use in digital SLR, while the lens that has aperture ring can be use in manual SLR.

ED - the quality of the lens glasses is higher, so the image that it produced also will be clearer.

the rest, I don't know yet.
i'm sorry..

Those fireworks shots was taken using my old Fujifilm Finepix S7000 digicam.

I used manual mode with Aperture F8 and Shutter speed is 1/1.6seconds.

I also shot in continuous mode and used a tripod.

I haven't tried taking fireworks with my D80 yet.

My friend suggested to use the 50mm 1.8d to shoot fireworks at high megapixels and crop the photo later.

no need to poison
400D is cheaper than D80, if ur budget suits, getting it is never wrong
Same with the alpha

Just that if you really wanna venture into photography, as a tad more serious hobby, better "lifespan". better specs, better awb, better colours (subjective), better handling, then mah get D80 lo

I can say that the CCD for focus aint really accurate.  blush.gif

Poison me with D80 brother.  laugh.gif

I have tried it also.... The IS is a very very good feature, but I really don't like the feel of the cam. Very light, and the shutter sound is OMG...... So erm... "fake". It sounds like a spring only.

In Malaysia you shouldn't use BMW to quote.

It would be better that most of us Admire and adore R34 Skyline GTR , thus only affordable to get a second hand Putra , Wira aeroback so what can do much with that ?  laugh.gif  laugh.gif

Added on June 14, 2007, 11:18 pmAfter much thinking , the D80 body only + 18-200mm VR at 5900 is pretty expensive , yet it seems well worth the price.

Geez , i'm so confuse at D80 , 400D and Aplha 100. sad.gif

But my friend is very happy with his Sony Alpha and he takes good photos too.

I'm very impress by Nikonians here as you guys are so helpful. blush.gif

Anyone got the best price or maybe package for D80w/kit lens ? biggrin.gif
Although the price is pretty much expensive if compare to the 400D . after more consideration , the Nikon seems the most reliable one. biggrin.gif tongue.gif

Perhaps , anyone selling their D80 ? brows.gif

Some time ago, I asked about the battery grip, the price is around RM500++

I would say it would be more comfortable if you are taking a lot of portrait shots. Besides that, it's more stable and steady for portrait shots.

If got $$, buy it. If not, have to master holding your D80 for portrait.

It's a good accessory, many people wants it, but some choose not to have it cause of it's price.

This online store is selling it for only RM495 http://shashinki.com/shop/nikon-mbd80-batt...dslr-p-365.html

The battery grip is not just for Potrait shots
it would be helpful for events/fashion shoot also
so ur arms wont block other ppl when u r shooting vertically

also with the battery grips
provided if u r using 2 batteries you will not run off of batt easily

Normally salesperson will be reluctant to give you the best price if u ask over the phone only.

Some people prefer not to have BM-7 on because of better clarity. And such screen protectors can reduce glare.

Some users will remove BM-7 and have a Screen Protector on only.

Well, 50mm 1.8d is not a macro lens. Adding a close up filter will make it a cheap alternative to macro lens. There are many types of close up such as +1, +2, +3 and +4. These are commonly used. Depending on what you shoot, you use diff close up filters. I got a +4, but I think it's way too close. I will be looking for a +2 now.

52mm is the size of the ring in the front. 50mm is the fixed focal length not ring size. You can't zoom with 50mm 1.8d lens.

When you talk about lenses, the range 18-200mm, 70-300mm, 24mm, 50mm, 400mm, doesn't mean it's the ring size. It's the focal length of the lens. The range that it can zoom.

does anyone ever try Sigma 24-70mm F2.8? I was thinking of buying it, but I don't know is it good or not.

I wanna sell off my 18-125mm, & get something to cover between 20mm-70mm. (to cover between 10-20mm and 70-300mm)

my choice is sigma 24-70mm F2.8, tamron 28-75mm F2.8 or tokina 28-80mm F2.8. But if I get starting from 28mm then it will be a huge gap between 20mm to 28mm..

hmm.. what you all think?

Just my opinion. Get the Tamron or Sigma 17-50. From the gears u have, u better end up with this. As u said, if u get 24-70, u will have a gap between 20-24, and gap at wide angle is more noticeable than tele end..

With 17-50, yes u will lose the gap between 50-70, but at tele, it really not noticeable, a few more steps in front would be able to compensate it.

Yes, 17-50 clash with ur Sigma 10-20 then, but u have a less chance to swap lens biggrin.gif

fixed aperture give u fixed lighting on the tele end. more suitable for indoor shooting.

i was thinking like you too, 24-70 at 1st,
but then again

1. 24-70 is very very old. i prefer more "latest" lenses
2. f/2.8 - will b used a lot in indoors. gonna need as wide as u can get
3. the reputation of the tamron

Actually I am going down to Foto Miami KL PLaza today to get my MB-D80.

Not sure what price I am gonna get. Hope to see the director there.

UPDATE 1.29p.m.

I finally got my MB-D80, just in time for Japan GT in Sepang tomorrow. Anyone else going?

I got the MB-D80 for RM480 and another EN-EL3e for RM170. I think the battery was a lil more expensive.

During my visit to foto miami kl plaza today.

I bump into a German who bought the NikonD2xs at over 12k, 4GB Sandisk Extreme III CF and SB800.

he paid everything by cash. Damn scary wei, looking at the bundle of RM100 notes he has. Shocking i tell you! Damn jealous, he use money like toilet paper only. Seriously. No need to bargain or anything, just ask how much and pay.

Of course he didn't just walk in, he had to order his D2Xs. Apparently whole malaysia also very hard to get.

That's a great tripod. Many photogs like this tripod.

Very heavy and steady.

Interested in D80 but EOS400D very tempting le. CAN ANYONE CONVINCE me why to buy a Nikon? Canon has this dust cleaning thing, CMOS and is much more cheaper...

Why D80?

Maybe this would help you out.

http://www.dcviews.com/reviews/Canon-Rebel...-D80-review.htm

It's always up to the individual.

Us Nikon D80 users would definitely ask you to get the D80.

But personally I think that the 400d built and D80 built can't be compared. D80 built is so much more versatile. Canon 400d feels "plasticky".

Peformance wise, both also has it's pros and cons.

There is no one perfect camera.

Depending on your budget, just buy one that suits you. Try the cams.

Don't rely on what we say. We're just here to advise not influence you.
