Two terror suspects shot dead in Sumatra

user posted image

JAKARTA • Indonesian police shot dead two men suspected of burning down a police station complex in Sumatra on Sunday in a militant-inspired attack, officials said yesterday.

The duo had used bows and arrows to attack the police, who said a terrorist message was found scrawled on a piece of paper on one of the suspects. The message was written by a man identifying himself as Abu Azzam Al Arkhobiliy, reported The Jakarta Post.

"We are investigating links between the fire and the two terrorists who were killed," said national police spokesman Rikwanto.

He added that firefighters had found two men near the razed complex in Dharmasraya regency in West Sumatra and reported them to the police.

All the main buildings at the police headquarters were burned to the ground but there were no casualties.

Antara news agency reported that following the fire, nine prisoners were evacuated to a safe location. The police are also increasing security measures in the area.

The police and police buildings have been the primary targets for militants in Indonesia for many years because of a sustained crackdown by the anti-terrorism force on home-grown radicals.

Detachment 88 - known locally as Densus 88 - has managed to stamp out or weaken many radical Islamist networks.

But the world's largest Muslim-majority nation has seen a recent resurgence in radicalism, inspired largely by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

A series of small-scale attacks since early last year have been linked to ISIS, which is believed to have thousands of sympathisers in Indonesia.

Zimbabwe in turmoil as possible coup develops: Gunshots and explosions heard in Harare as military takes over state TV channel

Fears of a coup sent shockwaves around Zimbabwe as the military seized its national state TV broadcaster after at least three explosions were heard in Harare.
Armed soldiers were also seen assaulting passers-by in the capital and loading ammunition near a group of four military vehicles in an unprecedented challenge to Robert Mugabe.

The Zimbabwean President's house, where gunfire and explosions was heard this morning, was also surrounded by soldiers, but speculation suggested it was for his own protection amid suggestions his 37-year reign was coming to an end.

Tanks had been making their way to the city centre throughout the day yesterday as tensions reached boiling point.

General Constantino Chiwenga (right) warning of a military takeover during a press conference on Monday

Zimbabwe's head of the military, General Constantino Chiwenga said he could 'step in' to end President Mugabe's 'purge' of opponents on Monday. This prompted the ruling ZANU-PF party to say it would never succumb to military pressure and described the statement by the armed forces chief as 'treasonable conduct'.

Mugabe plunged the country into crisis last week by sacking vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, widely seen as a power move to make way for his wife Grace to succeed him.

n Harare in the early hours of this morning, aggressive soldiers told passing cars to keep moving through the darkness. 'Don't try anything funny. Just go,' one barked at a reporter on Harare Drive.

Two hours later, soldiers overran the headquarters of the ZBC, Zimbabwe's state broadcaster and a principal Mugabe mouthpiece, and ordered staff to leave. The military has since released a live broadcast: A man in military fatigues said the army wanted to deal with people who "were committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country".

"As soon as we have accomplished our mission, we expect that the situation will return to normalcy."

The US embassy in Harare tweeted that it would be closed on Wednesday "due to ongoing uncertainty". It also advised US citizens in Zimbabwe to "shelter in place" until further notice.

Robert Mugabe placed under house arrest as his wife flees to Namibia; Army insists it is merely 'restoring democracy'.

Zimbabwe is under the control of the country's military after troops, who are holding President Robert Mugabe under house arrest, seized the state broadcaster.

In what appeared to be a coup against the 93-year-old Mugabe - the world's oldest head of state - the military was at pains to emphasise it had not staged a military takeover, but was instead starting a process to restore Zimbabwe's democracy.

The military appears to have brought an end to Mugabe's long, 37-year reign in what the army's supporters praised as a 'bloodless correction'.

Grace, his wife, is said to have fled to Namibia according to an opposition MP, though there has been no official confirmation of her whereabouts.

In his first contact with the outside world since the takeover, Mugabe spoke by telephone to the president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, and told him he was confined to his home but fine, the South African presidency said in a statement.

Mugabe is now likely to be forced to hand power to his sacked vice president in a few weeks to make today's coup appear legal, experts have claimed.

Deposed vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, 75, a veteran of Zimbabwe's 1970s liberation wars who was sacked by Mugabe earlier this month, is believed to have returned from exile.

The dismissal of Mnangagwa, nicknamed the Crocodile, had left Grace Mugabe, 52, in prime position to succeed her husband as the next president - a succession strongly opposed by senior ranks in the military.
