Islamist prisoners kill five Indonesian counter-terrorism police

DEPOK, Indonesia (Reuters) - Islamist militant prisoners have killed five members of an elite Indonesian counter-terrorism force at a high-security jail and were holding one of them hostage on Wednesday, police said.

One convicted terrorist had also been killed in clashes at the jail in Depok, on the outskirts of the capital Jakarta, national police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal told reporters.

Authorities were unsure how many people remained inside the prison complex.

“Five of our colleagues died ... one of our colleagues is still inside and being held hostage,” Iqbal said, adding that the hostage was reported to be safe.

It was the highest death toll suffered by the counter-terrorism police force, known as Detachment, or ‘Densus’, 88, which was set up in 2003 and received training and funding from Australia and the United States.

The squad largely broke up militant cells in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country. But a recent spate of low-level attacks inspired by Islamic State prompted authorities to more than double its force to 1,300 late last year.

Chief security minister Wiranto said the incident was being treated “very carefully because it concerns national security”.

Police spokesman Iqbal said the prison, at the Mobile Police Brigade headquarters, held about 130 convicted terrorists, but it was unclear how many were involved in the clashes, which broke out late on Tuesday.

The prisoners are suspected of having taken weapons from the police who were killed.

Police said four officers were negotiating with the prisoners.

“If they surrender, it will be a non-violent process. But if there is a threat to officers or others, we will take very strong action,” Iqbal said.

In a message carried on its Amaq news agency, Islamic State claimed responsibility and said 10 counter-terrorism officers had been killed.

Iqbal denied that Islamic State was involved. He said a dispute had broken out over checks by prison authorities of prisoners’ food.

But another police spokesman, Setyo Wasisto, said some of the prisoners had recently met Aman Abdurrahman, who is believed to be the ideological leader of IS sympathizers in Indonesia. He is on trial for terrorism and is held at the same prison.

Police maintained tight security around the jail and kept onlookers away.

Islamic State sympathizers have carried out a series of mostly low-level attacks in Indonesia over the past few years.

Last year, an attack by two suicide bombers, using pressure cookers packed with explosives, killed three police and wounded 12 people at a Jakarta bus terminal.

In January 2016, four Islamic State-linked militants mounted a gun-and-bomb attack at an intersection outside a Starbucks cafe in central Jakarta, killing themselves and four others.

Security forces shoot dead 4 men in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU, May 8 (Bernama) -- Security forces based here shot dead four men believed to be members of a kidnap-for-ransom gang off Sahabat near here, about 13.6 nautical miles from Pulau Malamanuk, Philippines, early today.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din said an integrated team comprising the eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom), 69 Commando unit and Marine Police was patrolling the waters when they intercepted around 2 am, a boat with a number of people on board which was suspiciously speeding towards a fishing boat.

"The security team acted promptly and was approaching the boat when all of a sudden shots rang out. The security team fired back in defence," he told a press conference here today, adding, the bodies of two suspects were found on the boat while another two, floating in the water.

He said the suspects were believed to be in their 20s to 40s and did not have any identification document.

A Remington Rand pistol and a grenade launcher were also seized from the boat, he said.

Ramli said 69 Commando and Marine Police personnel dived into the water in an attempt to retrieve firearm believed to have fallen into the sea from the suspects' grasp during the shootout but had not recovered the weapons.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that the security forces early this year succeeded in foiling 33 attempts of cross border crime in the ESSZone.

Israel strikes Iranian targets in Syria in response to rocket fire
1 hour ago

Israel says it has struck almost all of Iran's military infrastructure in Syria following an Iranian rocket attack.

The Israeli military said 20 rockets were fired at its positions in the occupied Golan Heights overnight.

It responded by launching what a spokesman called "one of the broadest aerial operations in recent years".

There was no immediate comment from Iran, whose deployment of troops to Syria to back the government in the country's civil war has alarmed Israel.

Iran has repeatedly called for an end to the existence of the Jewish state.

Israel's military had been anticipating an attack by Iranian forces after reportedly carrying out a number of strikes on their facilities in Syria in recent months. They included one on an airbase in April that killed seven Iranian troops.

What happened in the Golan?
Israel occupied most of the Syrian Golan Heights in the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed it in a move not recognised internationally.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said that early on Thursday morning about 20 rockets had been launched at its forward posts there by the Quds Force, the overseas operations arm of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards force.

IDF spokesman Lt Col Jonathan Conricus said four rockets were intercepted by the Israeli Iron Dome aerial defence system, while the others fell short of their targets. No injuries or damage were reported.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based group that monitors the civil war in Syria, confirmed that "dozens of rockets" were fired from Quneitra province and the south-western Damascus countryside towards the occupied Golan.

It did not identify those responsible, but said the rocket attack came after Israeli forces bombarded Baath, a Syrian-controlled town in the Golan demilitarized zone.

Israeli forces in the occupied Golan Heights were placed on high alert on Tuesday night
A senior source in an Iranian-led regional military alliance that supports Syria's government also told AFP news agency that Israeli forces had fired first.

How did Israel respond to the rocket fire?
An IDF statement said fighter jets had struck "dozens of military targets" belonging to Iran inside Syria. They included:

- Intelligence sites associated with Iran and the "Radical Axis" - a term Israeli officials use to refer to an alliance between Iran, Syria, Lebanon's Hezbollah movement and Palestinian militant groups such as Hamas

- A logistics headquarters belonging to the Quds Force

- A military logistics compound in Kiswah, a town south of Damascus

- An Iranian military compound north of Damascus

- Quds Force munition storage warehouses at Damascus International Airport

- Intelligence systems and posts associated with the Quds Force

- Observation and military posts and munition in the Golan demilitarised zone

- The Iranian launcher from which the rockets were fired overnight

- The IDF said it had also targeted several Syrian military air defence systems after they fired at the Israeli fighter jets despite an Israeli "warning".

Syrian state news agency Sana reported that the army's air defences had shot down scores of missiles but that some missiles had hit a number of air defence battalions, radars and an ammunition depot.

Later, Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman told a conference in the town of Herzliya that the IDF had "hit almost all of the Iranian infrastructure in Syria".

"They must remember that if it rains here [in Israel], it will pour there," he said. "I hope that we have finished this chapter and that everyone got the message."

Russia, which is also supporting the Syrian government in the civil war, said that Israel had fired more than 60 air-to-surface and 10 surface-to-surface missiles during the raid and that air defences shot down more than half of them.

The Syrian Observatory reported that at least 23 people were killed in the strikes, including five Syrian soldiers and 19 other allied fighters.

IDF twitter claims Syrian SA-2, SA-5, SA-17 and SA-22 missile batteries were destroyed.

Russia claims 28 Israeli aircraft were deployed.

Some reports that IDF Patriot batteries joined the Iron Dome launches.

INI RAIFAL AKU TUAN! ADA RAMAI SEPERTINYA, TAPI NI DIA AKU PUNYA!

BLAM!

...oops...

seriously though. this is against, like, every firearms SOP conceivable...! I do not think you look down the barrel from that end unless minimum, the magazine is ejected and the bolt is open, right?

P.S. I just noticed... in that video the magazine really IS ejected, presumably bolt open too. Looks okay after all.

I hope that was the same condition for you isteri when your inspector looked at it!

of course, even in the video there is no mag attached
even before the instructor go down on the weapon a function check is done according to SOP

Never ever look down a weapons barrel of an intact weapon. Even if there is no ammo in chamber a broken or incorrectly installed firing pin can potentially detach from the bolt and come out of the muzzle if the bolt suddenly slams forward.
