While checking the prices out of curiosity, why are these china units so cheap, up to almost 50% cheaper than local units? Can it even work on our shores?

Are you a risk taker? If yes, go for China set. Else pay higher for 3 years local warranty.  nod.gif

Just like other electronic product. Anything can go wrong. Or nothing. Totally depend on your luck. blush.gif

Yes, it can work here. Asus firmware is global. It is cheaper than local units, because local resellers increase the price, and are less problematic and comes with 3 years local warranty.

Less problematic, meaning the product failure rate is lower for local units compared to those from china?

Don't they all come out from the same manufacturing plant?? confused.gif rclxub.gif

That's exactly what I'm not sure about.  sweat.gif
Stability is quite important as I'm not the one that will use it most of the time while away at uni, and "off-site diagnostic" had been a pain thus far. Well, local warranty can't do 1-to-1 exchange on the first year too and it sure will take awhile for local warranty claim. About a tie.
But that's almost 2 china units for 1 local unit. Maybe I should just toss a coin  doh.gif

I just noticed that on both TS post and also user posted photos on TB, there's just a quick start guide instead of the WTFast leaflet. *edit: seems like there's no code on the leaflet too
Anyway, I don't really have time to play any online games so It doesn't bother me too much, thanks for the heads up nod.gif

To buy and use the China unit, here are some of the important thing as your checklist:

1. The current latest hardware version is R1.5. This hardware is not regionally locked and therefore you can use for Malaysia WiFi spectrum. If you get other hardware version, maybe it will work or maybe it will not work properly with WiFi devices in Malaysia.

2. For the power adapter, you just need to plug it in a universal converter, or a universal power socket. No need voltage conversion as it can be used for 240V power line.

3. Change your language to English. Download the official latest firmware from Asus support website, and flash it manually.

4. Once you flashed with the latest international firmware, it is recommended to flash with latest Merlin firmware (current version is 384.6). I found Merlin firmware to be stabler and more configurable for Malaysia environment.

5. Go to Wireless > Professional, set the Region from China to "Asia" (not Singapore). This is very important. You will see the available WiFi bands are slightly different among the regions. If your router does not have this option or unable to change it, then it is a locked hardware version.

6. Set WAN internet detection to "PPP echo". Set both MTU and MRU to 1480 (from default 1496). You will face network problem with 1496.

7. Go to LAN > IPTV, set to Unifi-Home for Unifi (set to Maxis for Maxis).

8. Go to Administration > System, set time zone to Kuala Lumpur.

PPP echo is used to reconnect your Internet in case it is down. If it is not set properly, after your Internet down, it will not auto-reconnect, and you will need to manually reconnect it.

MTU and MRU are Maximum Transmission Unit and Maximum Receive Unit. For most ISP, they will be of the same value.

To get the optimum MTU/MRU, open command prompt in your Windows computer.

Run "ping -f -l 1452 8.8.8.8" (or any external server that you can ping) and you will get 0% loss.

Run "ping -f -l 1453 8.8.8.8" and you will get "packet needs to be fragment" with data loss.

If this is the case, your optimum MTU/MRU is 1452 + 28 = 1480. Because any value after 1452 will not pass the test.

You can set it to smaller value without problem, but then your Internet connection is not optimum because need to send more packets for the same amount of data.

In order to use the default 1492, run the ping test for 1492 - 28 = 1464. If you pass the ping test, then you can leave it as 1492, otherwise you will face Internet speed issue.

Hi May I check with you. You bought it through the same Lazada Taobao collection? How is it? Did you flash it with international firmware once you received it? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

I didn’t bought it, and you do not need to flash with international firmware, as Asus is global firmware.
