lol i am planning for similar configurations (intel optane memory + nvme ssd) to free up ram space used for primocache

i have read something about storemi from amd but it doesn't look good iinm
*
If you use only 1 OS, StoreMi is good. It requires the app installed once you make a StoreMi drive. If you have other OS with no StoreMi app, you cannot see StoreMi drive..... even after removing the tier drive. You are pretty much screwed the target drive once you have StoreMi enabled on it. You have to start over for the disk drive if you dont want the StoreMi mess.

I went Primocache instead. Dont want that cannot see a drive nonsense.

check with the bios. find AHCI keyword.

modern Dramless is not much different vs dram SSD. They use NAND to store the data map address instead of RAM.

the issue with dramless SSD is random read write over large area will take a performance hit. For example large area like writing >20GB of many small files randomly. Cause of this because the controller buffer is used up after large writing, causing it to re-read nand for data mapping.

but if u are replacing HDD for lightweight use, dramless SSD will perform just as fast as dram version.

Again it depends on your usage, if u keep writing like >20GB data, that is going to be an issue.

Normally it is recommended to buy DRAM SSD over dramless version. If you are buying large capacity, the price different isnt much about RM70+ extra only. But those low end capacity can be a different between 120GB vs 240GB. for example, a DRAM 120GB SSD cost as much as a 240GB Dramless SSD. In this case I rather pick the 240GB.
*
Still, DRAMless SSD will wear faster than those with DRAM.

Crucial MX500 prices are hard to ignore.

why u are so concern about SSD wear in 2018?

a 240GB dramless have 80TBW, thats 22GB per day everyday for the next 10years or 44GB per day for 5 yrs. If you actually write that much every day for 10yrs, you are not a casual user already.

MX500 prices are only good for 500GB and above. The 250GB is overpricing, it is real close to dramless 480GB.
*
I like my things last longer.

Advantages with Crucial MX500

5 years warranty
more TBW
A bit more space
DRAM cache = no stutter

I have no issue paying for those advantages.

QUOTE(Boldnut @ Nov 28 2018, 04:14 PM)
valid argument for your personal opinion. I was talking about for people who are replacing HDD for old computer, for them it is a huge upgrade even dramless SSD.

for lasting longer it is pointless for most users, most user probably throw away the drive b4 they reach TBW unless they get lemon unit. If you are comparing TBW & capacity, A dramless SSD at twice the capacity @ same price will win those 2 points you mentioned.
*
Replacing HDD shouldn't even consider DRAMless. Unless you want stuttering when you run as primary OS disk. Already got people complaining about A400.

Secondary? Maybe. Warranty still gives you a piece of mind.

once again it depends on the user usage.
*
Yes, avoid heavy loads. Some DRAMless SSD even stutters with slightly elevated load.

oh you base on Sandisk ssd plus ah, thats is a shitiest tier among dramless SSD. You avoid at all cost, even A400 is significant better laugh.gif Sandisk dont even post TBW rating also, no reason to buy that model as it is not even cheaper.

Yeah, SSD Plus is bad. On the last page, seems like every DRAMless SSD they tested on that review stutters.

I only trust Anandtech for SSD reviews though. They actually hammers the SSDs.

Is kingston A1000 any good or is there better option /value for money? I'm planning to buy NVME SSD for my laptop. Basicaaly I'm a light user with occasional video editing project.
*
Not bad. Performance? Storage space? You get what you pay for.
https://www.anandtech.com/bench/SSD18/2447

If you are going to use your SSD as scratch disk, I suggest increasing budget for MLC based SSD like Samsung 860 Pro or 970 Pro.

All SSDs these days has Terabytes Written limit warranty. Make sure you keep track of it. You can find out how much you can write by looking deeper into the specs.

You mean the write endurance right? From what i can find 960GB version will have 600TB write endurance. I guess that should last me for a good 3 years usage.
*
That's plentiful. You only have to worry when you use it as scratch disk for videos and some other big stuffs. Defragging the SSD also eats a lot of TBW.

Overpowered! I wonder how is the performance when it is filled. SSDs are weaker when it is filled. How weak depends on brand and model.

i will see how to cope with it later hehe (it's a plan for the next upgrade; i still have plenty of time hehe)
not bad smile.gif
if you put op of 25% or more is it still slowing down?
*
Didnt notice. Some SSDs gets trashed when full. Data here says it

it's a common problem for nand flash. to maintain speed, there are some but rare cases we do as far as 40% op (for servers; meaning 1tb drive, 600gb usable lol)

i just use a typical 10 to 15% op at home.
*
I just noticed some brands and models takes more hit when it is filled. Intel Optane is ridiculously overpowered. More performance when filled. lol

this is true. it's more practical to be used for servers, or professional work (those very intensive ones) for my usage, even for work, it's really a waste.
*
Yeah, still avoiding Optane due to pricing issue.

Patriot Burst detailed reviews are non-existant. I don't trust it.

Ignore that trash. Especially for an OS drive. Increasingly more people experiencing stutters.
