Nothing can't be copied If someone put their mind to it. Come on! It's only a bunch of pipes!

Anyway, I am anti-establishment… Brompton has enough business to rip filthily gigantic profit, they don't need my money…

It's everyone's dream to rip obscenely ridiculous huge profit. Dahon and me included...

I believe that Dahon Curl i8 is one of the 43 Eurobike 2017 award winners. They will be announced on 30th August, first day of Eurobike Show.

Then sales of i8 start to fly next year...

The Curl i8 is their limited edition and I think after the 500 units, they will turn back to Curl i3. Else they will disappoint their first 500 buyers. Also I don't know if the rear triangle uses 127 mm or 135 mm hub width. Nexus can be used on both length but the Shimano Alfine and Rohloff can only fit in 135mm. If it is 127 mm , then it's a pity! cry.gif Same as the Brompton.

As good as Bromptons are, or as many riders thinks they are (to me I don't think so) biggrin.gif , nothing is permanent. Just five years ago, folding bikes are not a craze as it is now. During those days, Bromptons are the king and people would pay premium for the pedigree. Now with most if not all major bike brands are into it, more research and funds are allocated to folding bikes. Just google and see all the concept folding ways there are. Bromptons depends on the brand, the classical pedigree and loyal die hards, apart from that nothing else in their products is actually worth the bucks you pay for it. Their patent on the folding has expired and there are no new technology that Bromptons will offer. In fact Brompton has been trying hard to maintain their popularity with new colors, new events, new etc. but their bikes stays the same. That's because of their image of tradition and classic.

Avid riders can differentiate the good and bad of the replicas from China but a new rider can't. To them, the replicas looks the same as the original. Just imagine, if a new rider goes to Kepong or Billyshop here in Taiping, look at the 360s. They fold the same and cost 2.3K then he walks over to Eng Hern and looks at the Brompton. Then he get the shock of his life, the cost almost 7K blink.gif Then he carries it, Wah! it's even heavier than the former one. You can't ride because most shops don't have a test bike, so you can't judge. See the scenario?

Even now, I can see the replicas in FB page on the rides my friends are doing. It's easy to spot actually, the handle post is straight unlike the original 'B' which curves to the front. The tubes are larger in replicas as they are aluminum. The sales are going up! I now know of 3 different brands of these replicas.

Nobody in the heydays will think that Raleigh will become what they are today, just rebadging bikes from other sources. Brands like Carlton, Simplex, Sachs (internal hub dept. first sold to SRAM and now to a Taiwanese firm) are all gone. Even the mighty Santa Cruz bikes is sold to Taiwanese now.

If you are the classical riders, just like Mini Club, Volkswagon Club etc, you will still buy a Brompton but if you are a normal commuter or someone who approves of newer technology , you won't pay the price of the Brompton. The classical clubs will be there in the end but the numbers won't maintain.

Once the Dahon Curl reaches their sales target, the price will come down with cheaper options. They finish targeting the cream of the market, then slowly they will go for the ones who cannot afford the initial offering. After all, all the manufacturing facilities of the Curl is already in place. They need to run it 24/7. They have to market it fast too.

Still Brompton will hold their prestige and classical values but their sales won't.

if the curl rm3k, definitely will buy, otherwise.. wait for it lah..

but i think that is the price range of dahon bikes. the curl i8 is overpriced for me, unless a dahon collector. 3 speed are enough for me. i think later can mod to 2x3 and put fd in front laugh.gif

as for brompton copy,
i do remember 1 brand before, MIT offering with outer gear besides of internal gear and that one looks good and solid.

There are ppl only feed on roti… but there are have tapioca as staple…
Also, there are ppl who insisted their pepper pork soup is bah kut teh…
There are also ppl who only believe kitchen at home is for show case and cooking is for restaurant…

From Japanese site, it mentioned that i8 is using Shimano SG-C6001-8V which is 135 mm hub width and Shimano site mentioned that only 7 spd hub using 127mm hub width.

Hi guys,

I've been away from this forum for quite sometime. Just to recap, I started cycling in 2015 thru some family outing in Putrajaya. I saw my sister friend's who riding a java fit and I'm impressed by it's folding mechanism, so I bought a Java Fit. However, my wife started to join me into cycling and I needed another bike and I start to compare Java fit with other brand and Dahon comes into the picture and I started to hunt for a Dahon and with the same budget as java fit, I got myself a Dahon Route with 7 speed. I decided to pass java fit to my wife as it have 18 speed so it will be easier for her to ride. Dahon Route is a sturdy solid bike to ride, less flex on the handle post but I start to realsie the gearing are inadequate as the rear cassette starts from 13 to 28. It unable to go as fast as java fit and unable to climb as easy as Java fit. So I started to research on how to upgrade my Dahon Route into a 9 speed or maybe a 2 X 9. To my dismay, I start to realsie the cost of upgrading a 7 speed into 8 or higher speed. A 7 speed wheelset cannot be use due to its hub are made different. The cost to upgrade will be almost the same price as the bike itself. A new wheel set, cassette and shifter. And due to Dahon Route frame shape. It's unable to hang in a front derailleur. Anyway, one of my kids started to ride so I decided to just pass the bike to him without modification.

That means I need to get myself another bike. Searching high and low and finally I decided to get a Dahon Dash. It's fast, it fold so it should be the best. So I bought a 2nd hand Dahon Dash P18. It's fast no doubt and I really enjoy riding this bike for a while until i need to pack 3 bikes in my car for family ride and my younger kid are starting to learn how to ride and i might need to put in 4 bikes in my car.

So the search for another bike is inevitable.... So after much online research and comparing, I find Tyrell IVE fits the needs I want. A bike that feels solid ( No folding in the frame ) and it wears a 18" tyre. So I sold my Dahon Dash P18 for this Tyrell IVE. It's my first expensive bike which is over RM5K and it really feels different. Been riding it for some time until my younger kid are ready to ride with us. And that I was thinking, should i get just a normal folding bike or go into something smaller and similar to Tyrell IVE .... Thats the time I started taking the plunge in buying a Brompton. And that was 2016 last year. And with four bikes that fit into my car, there's a lot of family ride been going on.

That's all for now. Will continue my story some other time.

Yea, Brompton does fold small. If you need the space, still cheaper than buying a bigger car.
I on the other hand never need to fold my bike… so…

I am doing leather crafting nowadays apart from riding off course. Here's a project I have made for cycling. Anyone interested in getting one can PM me. It's all manually hand stitched and genuine leather with suede lining. No expense is spared. Edges are fully burnished. Cheap too! Made such that it can be mounted on saddle rails or Brooks saddle eyelets and even front handle bar mounting rclxms.gif

I am actually going to start a leather craft store. Just going slow now, designing stuffs while making the different templates before going full fledge.

biggrin.gif I gave up the idea of getting the i8 or i7 already. I am eyeing the Chedech actually. Need to wait for a while first as price is quite steep. Also when I get a bike, I have to get 2, if you understand what I mean. rolleyes.gif

Just few weeks ago, I wanted to make bicycle leather carrying handle from my old leather office bag. My idea got bigger and I wanted to make saddle bag since I have the extra leather. Watched some YouTube. One inspired me that he moved to a smaller town and turned his leather crafting into business. Good luck to you.

BTW, I believe that there are at least 7 persons who preordered i8. I personally know 4 of them.

Ettigge,

Nice leather bag you have there smile.gif It's been some time since we met. What folding bike are you riding now?

Ok ... let me continue with my rant...... Haha.
After I got my first Brompton and that's when I realise a small folding footprint really matters a lot in my life style. I started to ride more and more on the brompton and I realise the gearing at not that bad at all. In fact with it's wide gearing like BWR, you got about 300% gearing ratio. In fact, the standard chainring of 50t, gives you about 100 inches per cycle. That's is as good as a 52t front X 11t on a 451 20" tyre. And with all the accessories you could get for a brompton. It is so much fun playing in it.
After some time, with me riding a brompton and my wife riding a tyrell, size start to creep in and speed are no longer the most important to me. So I bought another brompton for my wife and sold off my tyrell IVE.
So now my wife and I are riding brompton while 2 of my kids are with a java fit and dahon route and there's so much more space to get these 4 bikes in my car. smile.gif
