Xbox360 users who plug their consoles to their precious LCD monitors (such as myself) through VGA input and feel 'cheated' because of the poor black levels and washed out colors MIGHT not need to worry anymore.

Upon reading this little news update on the AVS forums, there might be solution to our problem. Here is a short snip of the news:

QUOTE
Answering other questions, both Xbox 360 Elite and current Xbox 360 units will have a spring (console) update which adds support for different video levels for VGA output ("7.5 IRE vs 0"). And as someone mentioned, using this setting you should be able to use computer monitors in addition to TVs with resolutions all the way up to 1080p with high fidelity and no issues with HDCP handshaking.

I did a little research on the 7.5 IRE and 0 IRE black levels and came out with this:

QUOTE
The 360 passes a below black pluge, but its default black level is 7.5 IRE with no way of adjusting it to 0 IRE. You'll have to adjust your display accordingly, as black levels will appear elevated. The white level of this player is a tad low at 98 IRE but still within our passing criteria. I wish manufacturers would pay closer attention to their output levels, as a properly calibrated display will have to be re-adjusted for these issues.
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/sho...function=search

QUOTE
My biggest problem with anything 480p on the 360 is the incorrect black level compared to HD signals. It outputs at the NTSC standard of 7.5 IRE and not 0 IRE like almost every other progressive scan DVD player, so everything is grey and washed out. Same applies to backwards compatible games, which rendered at a good black level on the regular XBOX. Actually, come to think of it, Halo 2 played on the 360 is all washed out too, in 720p. I really wish they'd fix that.
http://www.digg.com/gaming_news/Xbox_360_s..._Stunningly_Bad

QUOTE
...since SDTV uses 7.5 IRE for black levels and HDTV uses 0 IRE...
http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=516186&page=5

Okay enough of the lecture, here's the summary for you lazy readers:

1. LCD TV/LCD monitors uses a 0 IRE black level.

2. Xbox360 outputs a 7.5 IRE black level (the black level used in US [NTSC US], instead of 0 IRE [NTSC Japan].

Therefore, due to a mismatch of black level profiles, those who use VGA through LCD TV/Monitors will have 'brighter' black levels and as a result, lead to 'washed' out colours.

As a Dell 24" 2407 A04 user myself, I had to access the Service Menu and manually change the colour levels to produce a 'pure black' black, instead of the 'grey' black.

I hope this little compilation of mine will give other Xbox360-LCD users a sigh of relief.

DISCLAIMER: Please remember, this is not a 100% confirmed fix for our washed out colours problem. I'm merely coming to my own theory and conclusion after some thorough research. If the spring update doesn't fix this problem, too bloody bad.

i wonder if VGA output from the 360 has a "digital vibrance" color setting like most geforce cards?

i'm using a really old model of lcd screen, even normal pc VGA looks "washed out" on it. i up the digital vibrance" by quite a bit on my pc.

Are you referring to the Digital Vibrance thing? If you are, it doesn't really fix anything.
What it does is just over-saturates all the colours and makes it look unnatural.

If you're talking bout the upcoming Spring update which might fix our Xbox360 vga washed out colours, then yeah, i hope the update does some 'color fixing'

oh? so digital vibrance is not related to the IRE stuff? sorry, really no familiar with the technical stuff behing the VGA signal.

i think old model LCD screens do have a problem with colors, contrast and stuff, correct?

p/s: i love to "oversaturate" my old tv when playing ps2 games smile.gif unnatural gamecolors FTW !

Gawd.

Your NVIDIA control panel which is supposed to be used with your NVIDIA graphic card has absolutely nothing to do with the Xbox360 IRE issue i posted about.

Xbox 360 owners using LCD monitors will know what I'm talking about and will benefit from this little piece of news.

o_O now that you mentioned about this, now only i notice that the color problem...

One more thing, hope that you dont mind... i think my xbox is very sensitive to power/em inteference, everytime there is a electicity spike, or turn on/off switches near xbox, or i move a powerful em source (ie transformer) near the vga cable, the screen will go black a while (like turn off a while, 2-3sec) or artifacts will appear... so is it the problem of xbox360 itself or the vga cable (3rd party)?

No problem silencer. Good to see my effort put to good to those who can relate to the problem.

I'd be one happy dude too if I don't need to tinker with my 2407 settings anymore.

edit: You still need to buy an Elite for the HDMI. Just gimme the monster cable so it won't go to waste.

It's the Spring update. If I'm not mistaken, spring in the states is during March, April and May.

Since it's already April, chances are it'll be the end of this month or somewhere in May.

Let's keep our finger crossed that an update will come AND that it fixes our VGA problems.

Xbox 360 Spring 2007 Dashboard Update

XBOX LIVE DASHBOARD SPRING 07' UPDATE VIDEO

By the way, just got the news! It is confirmed by Microsoft themselves through xbox.com . Check it out!

Beginning the week of May 7, users of Windows Live Messenger on Xbox 360 can text chat using the virtual keyboard accessible on Xbox 360, or by connecting a USB keyboard to the console. This summer Microsoft will launch a QWERTY text-input device, a new accessory that will connect directly into the Xbox 360 controller to support text and instant messaging.

Other New Features
Beyond Windows Live Messenger, the Spring Update for Xbox 360 includes hundreds of new features and enhancements including:

A richer Achievement notification pop-up will showcase the name of the unlocked Achievement and the gamerscore value without needing to leave the game to check the Achievements list.
Enhanced family settings features for Xbox Live communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.
A new Xbox Live Marketplace blade lets Xbox Live members access the content they seek-whether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States)-from one place on Xbox Live.
Updates to Xbox Live Arcade allow owners to quickly see which Xbox Live Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox Live members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and Achievements directly with all friends on their friends list. Expanded "Tell a Friend" capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.
Expanded "Tell a Friend" capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.
A new option in Auto Downloads provides faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox Live Arcade games.
New progressive download controls provide easy access to optimal viewing options by letting people fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox Live Marketplace.
Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.
The Spring Update is free beginning the week of May 7 and will be easily accessible to every Xbox 360 owner through Xbox Live or on Xbox.com.
You may not even notice all the new features, but they are all designed to enhance your Xbox Live experience. Some of the other features in this upgrade include:

The name of game in tray is now displayed in the dashboard.
When the tray icon is highlighted, a list of achievements, game icon and gamerscore for that game is displayed.
Video trick modes are enabled for content that is being progressively downloaded from Video Marketplace.
Playback progress bar indicates download completion.
Improved skip forward, skip back functionality during video playback.
Switchable aspect ratio now available during video playback (Auto to Letterbox, Zoom, Stretch, Native).
Background downloads can occur after the console has been turned off-the console will automatically power down when background downloads complete (not enabled by default).
Earned Achievement notifications now show Achievement and Gamerscore details over the game without having to bring up the guide or leave the game.
Player and friends lists now quickly show session presence information for quick identification of users that are joinable.
Marketplace has now been raised to its own Dashboard blade to improve navigation.
Added Windows Live ID management functionality to Account Management.
Arcade Improvements

"Friends Playing Now" feature: Quickly find your friends in Arcade, see what they're playing and join in the fun. Friend information is displayed in multiple locations throughout Arcade.
Tell a friend: Send messages to your friends and boast about your latest achievements and earned high scores. Three new messages have been added to help you exalt your accomplishments.
Auto downloads: Have Arcade automatically all free and trial games directly to your collection. Build your collection quickly and easily through background downloads. A simple press of the X button will bring up the queue for review.
Expanded Arcade Leaderboard and Compare Achievements: Scroll through your entire friends leaderboard list (up to 100) and compare achievements.

When gamers sync their gamertag to their Microsoft passport, they will be able to port their Live Messenger friends over to their Xbox Live Friend's List Area. That area has been expanded with the new chat functionality. Players will still have their original 100-person Friend List, but additionally, a 600-person Messenger Buddy List is incorporated into the functionality now. The "Y-button" toggles between the Friend List and the Messenger list.

I like how even though the keyboard is plugged into the earphone jack, there's still a pass through for the earphones as well. That said the interesting fact for gear heads to note is... what does the keyboard connect to? That would mean the earphone jack in the controller is more than just a simple earphone jack, but if it IS just a simple jack with 2 data pins, how can it deliver both the keyboard signals, and the headset signals at the same time?!?!?!?!

Aaaa... brain twist..

Details of the next dash update

While the actual update is about a month away from being released, today we released official details on some of the new features and enhancements the free update will contain. In addition to MSN Messenger integration that you may have heard about, we also announced a new text input device coming this summer. Other features coming next month include:

    * The redesigned Achievement notification pop-up (toast) will show the name of the unlocked Achievement and the gamerscore value. You'll see this information the moment you earn an achievement. No more popping open the guide and interrupting your gameplay. (screenshot)
    * Enhanced family settings features for Xbox LIVE communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.
    * A new Xbox LIVE Marketplace blade lets Xbox LIVE members access the content they seek - whether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States) - from one place.
    * Updates to Xbox LIVE Arcade allow owners to see which Xbox LIVE Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox LIVE members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and Achievements directly with all friends on their friends list. The Tell a Friend capabilities have been expanded as well.
    * A new option in Auto Downloads provides faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox LIVE Arcade games.
    * New progressive download controls provide easy access to optimal viewing options by letting people fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
    * Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.

I know you probably have a bunch of questions about these features, so I'll work on getting a few guests on some of my upcoming shows to answer 'em.

One more thing, the update will also add the ability for the name of the game that is in your tray to show up on the dash. Oh, and it works for Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles smile.gif

That would mean the earphone jack in the controller is more than just a simple earphone jack, but if it IS just a simple jack with 2 data pins, how can it deliver both the keyboard signals, and the headset signals at the same time?!?!?!?!

Aaaa... brain twist..
*
notice the flat inserts (black) beside the jack? IINM there are metal contacts for those inserts on the controller side, i think that's how the keyboard communicate with the controller....
user posted image

however, this brings to another question... the pass through jack at the bottom of the keyboard doesn't look like its gonna accept the connector we have on the headset now (missing flat insert holes?). maybe it's just pre-production concept image... (or a hoax altogether, bwahahah - i'm just kidding). we'll just hv to wait n see...

This time MS quickly release all these info rite after they are leaked to the internet. laugh.gif

Just hope that no console will be 3ROD-ed when they update their box!

it's just another alternative... if playing on my pc i'd always prefer a full sized usb keyboard. but on the couch, the keyboard cable is not long enough to reach the 360 and having a keyboard lying around in the living room doesn't look that nice.

like the play n charge kit, not everybody would find it useful/necessary. i hope it's not too expensive... then i'll consider

it will be definately slower than using a regular keyboard because of the size of the buttons, but once you get used to it it should be okay. I'm for sure getting one when the new dashboard update comes out but then again that is price dependant of course.

But then again, up until now, we havent got any news on having web browsers on the 360, as what they have for PS3 and the Wii. Still a dissapointment for some of us, this update is just a minor-lift on the right track.

Typing with that thing would be easy if you're used to the nokia communicators, or the sidekicks that they have in the US.

One of the reason Microsoft don't want a web browser on Xbox 360 (at least not yet). Web browser on console will make it more vulnerable.

Edit:

This is the article I'm refering to:

QUOTE
And so we're raising the Console Terror Alert Level to intense orange-red, based on very credible, detailed information on a non-specific threat.

A security analyst for Australia's Computer Emergency Response team (who, contrary to the emergency response phrasing, don't get their own vans with flashing lights and sirens) has warned that, due to the online integration of new game consoles, he expects hackers to soon target your Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.

"I haven't seen any malicious code that is specifically designed to run on a PlayStation 3 or an Xbox but I would expect it is not very far away," he said. CVG notes that these predictions come after the Xbox Live account hack fears, though those turned out to be nothing more than some idiotic customer service reps being talked into divulging info over the phone.

Given that Xbox Live titles are tied to the original console and gamertag only, we'd say the possibility of a theft of your games and / or save files very unlikely. Not only that, but the peer-to-peer transfer of files over any of the console's self-contained networks is not possible. (In this sense, the PS3 and Wii are more vulnerable by merit of having a web browser.) There is always a worry over any medium where you have to enter financial or personal information (in this case your credit card), and the Xbox 360's inability to let you erase that card information has been chronicled in the past. However, the likelihood that you will be the victim of a console hack (and not in the traditional sense) without instigating it through your own console modding is, in our estimations, very slim.

The spring update is around end of May and yeah, I do hope that the update will solve the black level issues via the VGA. I connected my expect to my Philips CRT monitor via VGA (sometimes I play games in my room), the colour is a little washed out compared to connecting it via component video to my Bravia. Most of my friends face the same problem. That's a big letdown I guess. They should allow us to tweak the contrast and black levels via the dashboard. Hope the spring update will address this issue and hopefully with added backward compatible titles. Really sad that most of my old XBOX titles can't be played on my XBOX 360....... Sigh ....... and they're originals........ doh.gif

hi all,

i'm having an acer AL1916W. And of course i do have the same pale-looking colors when i play my 360 on it. All i could do for now is to crank up the contrast and brightness each time im on the 360 and readjust when i use my PC. it's troublesome but it helps a lot, considering the "improvement" comes at no cost at all.

But like all of u i do yearn for better colors and details. erm, would changing to a better LCD monitor help at all? It seems that the problem now is with the IRE black levels. are there any monitors out there that have got the same black levels as the 360?

Hear from u guys soon. lotsa thanks.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. has announced the launch of Windows Live Messenger on
Xbox 360, connecting people across Xbox 360 consoles, Microsoft Windows-based PCs and Windows Mobile-powered devices.

With this update to Xbox 360, people can connect and chat directly from their television using Windows Live Messenger, a network of more than 20 billion relationships and more than 260 million active accounts.

Beginning the week of May 7, the Xbox 360 spring update will provide Xbox 360 owners worldwide with access to Windows Live Messenger features, broadening the communication options on the Xbox LIVE social network.

My Dell faced the same problem. All colors looks washed out when I first connect it to the the 360.

However, on the Dell, there's the service menu where you can adjust all the levels manually. After some tweaking, the picture looks awesome.

Maybe you can try and find ways to access the service menu for your monitor?

Hmm... I tried to scavenge some more info regarding the video playback for the spring update. No place better to get it than from Doom9 forums.

It seems that *.avi containers aren't supported after all. sad.gif

Only WMV, ASF and MP4. (Possible MPG, too).

No AC3 support, either cry.gif and it seems that MKV is a low priority for future updates.

I was stupid to get my hopes up.

It's just a matter of time. For now, I guess they just want the number of Xbox 'sold' higher than their competitor. Once they've achieved that, maybe only then, they will start worrying about banning modded consoles.

Either way, just stick to unmodded if you're going Live.

Trust me, if the xbox community all go pirated. It's as good as dead. Although not everyone can buy 100% ori but think of it, we need ori to get the scene alive. Otherwise the gaming scene is all about individuals.
Pc gaming also like that, those warcraft counterstrike world of warcraft...might started off with pirated copy but most of them turn to ori eventually...'coz thats where the fun is.

Support local gaming scene abit la...you not happy mer when buy original? Nothing to worry and you are like supporting something.

Lets get kiasu. Pay more = better laugh.gif

That's right. I totally agree. 1st there is the rule that no originals, its equal to no online play.. but then the rule has been broken and thus, there is no differentiation at all between original and pirated. Why choose a more expensive option when you can get the exact same thing for free?

A rational thinker will never go original if it M$ doesnt do something about this. Just my 2cents, sorry bout off-topic but then if the spring'07 update doesnt do anything about the modded consoles and LIVE... i would dare say that a huge portion of the current original supporters might just skip over to the pirate ship.

Your money, you decide. People is having a better advantage over you, your say.

You can't connect to Xbox Live on your console if you don't have the latest system update. Since you can connect normally, that means you already have the latest Fall 2006 update. The Spring 2007 update will only come out on 7th May.

Silver member can do everything that Gold member can do except playing multiplayer games via Xbox Live. Some download content (for example, C&C3 demo) is available for download earlier to Gold member.

According to Wikipedia, the Fall 2006 update is included on Xbox 360 games released after 9th January 2007. So maybe you already updated your dashboard when you played one of those games?

Go to System "Blade" > Console Settings > System Info and the Dashboard version should be version 2.0.4552.0. If you have this, then you already have the latest Fall 2006 update.

The Fall update will be on 7th May 2007.

Heard that the spring update is going to ban Malaysian IP... again, this is a rumor heard from someone's friend who works in Microsoft blah blah blah, anyone heard of this as well??

Hope this is not true. Perhaps those who are expert in IP banning could shed us some light.

Well, I'm not gonna say where I heard it but it is from another local forum. Actually I know that IP banning can be done at anytime without any update to our console, but rumor is just a rumor so just letting you guys know about it.

Maybe MS finally putting some detection systme in the new update to detect modded console? We never know...

Talk of IP-based restriction has been around ever since Video Marketplace went online. Last time there were talks of restricting marketplace contents, specificially video contents to only IPs that belongs to each country. That did not happen.

What did happen was they restricted MS Points purchase via credit card based on IP (if I remember correctly). So if you have US account and you're staying in Malaysia/Singapore, and say want to purchase MS Points, the only way to do it is to buy Asian MS Points card. A US points card won't work.

i don't believe there will be IP restriction to connect to LIVE. there are many people from one country but staying at other country. e.g: US soldier stationed at Afghanistan.

haha, i doubt they really care to ban ip coming from unofficially supported countries. they could just have ban credit cards not matching their addresses to be more effective.

maybe some team is starting xboxlive malaysia, and they wanna ask current gamers registered with sgp addresses switch to newly recognized M'sian gamertags? haha, one can dream......

Same like it is here... If they're earning lots of money from it the services are good but if it's something they don't earn money from then they might as well close it down. Like condominiums are being built really quickly but services from TMNUTS and anything that's to do with Immigrants instead of locals are totally messed up(visa, PR, Citizenship).

Microsoft is to clamp down on users who set up foreign Xbox Live accounts on their 360's in order to download content they can't access in their local area. Microsoft said that such territory controls would be strengthened by next week's "Spring Update" which is released on May 7th.

"As a general policy we try to get global rights to content, but in some cases, it's not possible because of legal restrictions," the statement added. "In other instances, we have to get legal rights on a country-by-country basis, which unfortunately results with us having content on the service that has to be filtered based on geographical location."

Does that mean I won't be able to download HD tv series anymore? sad.gif

I'm willing to pay good money for the HD series but if MS doesn't want my money what to do? Back to the free stuff I guess.....

You can try using proxy to bypass the access control. Dunno if can work or not. Have to wait and see after the update.

proxy's ain't going to help, cause they're checking ur box's region now. luckily it seems like this special checking only applies to the media & entertainment items.

it's not that MS doesn't want your money rather the movie and studios have very messed up distribution rights issues about delivering content to other countries.

also if ms doesn't properly control the content distribution they can be held viable for censorship violations in certain countries, imagine what if ppl found out ms is allowing u to easily download uncensored R rated movies here? tongue.gif

They're checking the box's region or location? Say if someone has a PAL box, can they download content from US Marketplace even if they're located here in Malaysia? hmm.gif

Marketplace Border Control Q&A

Evening everyone. Thanks so much for your patience - I know you've got loads of questions about the changes that are coming to Xbox Live accounts, and apologies for not being able to address them sooner.

So... I managed to grab some time with Michael Newey, Group Product Marketing Manager for Xbox Europe, to try and get as many answers for you as possible. I'm aware that not all of the posers you have will be answered here, and I'm continuing to draw up a list of your requests. But hopefully this will go some way to helping. If you have more questions or comments, stick them down below and I'll see what I can do - but no promises! Here we go:

Q: First of all - why is Xbox doing this?

Michael Newey: The issue here is that when we add new gaming and entertainment content to Xbox LIVE we sign a contract with the content provider. In that contract it tells us which country or countries the content is licensed in. It then becomes a legal requirement for us to ensure that the content is only available for to people in the countries in which it is licensed. If we don't do this it makes it really difficult for us to get new content providers to put content on Xbox Live, which in turn means Xbox Live members don't get the content they want.

A good example is the TV and movie content available on Video Marketplace in the US. This content is not available in other countries because it is not licensed for them. However, we know that some Xbox Live members who live outside of the US have been signing up for a US Xbox Live account so they can access this content. When they do, it means Xbox is breaking its contractual agreement with the content provider, so we have to stop this.

Q: Some of these Xbox Live users are just keen to get cool content that is not available in the country where they live. Why are we stopping them from doing that?

Michael Newey: We understand that, but unfortunately we are legally required to ensure that all content on Xbox Live is only available for download in the country in which it is licensed. If we don't we may not be able to continue providing quality content. We're not trying to stop people getting the content they want - we're trying to ensure that we can continue to provide great content on Xbox Live, and bring that content to other countries in the future. I should also point out that licensing agreements like this are standard practice in the entertainment industry.

Q: So when will Xbox Live members in Europe get the chance to download the kind of cool content that is, for example, available to US Xbox Live members on Video Marketplace?

Michael Newey: At the moment we have made no announcements about Xbox Live Video Marketplace for Europe. However, Europe is very important for us, and we will be making announcements in the future. Stay tuned...

Q: We know that some Xbox Live members have been downloading Xbox Live content from countries different from where they live. What will happen to that content?

Michael Newey: If you've downloaded content using an Xbox Live account from outside your own country and that content is stored on your hard drive or a memory unit, you will keep that content. The important point is that you will not be able to download any more content using that account in the future.

Q: What happens if a user tries to re-download content they've purchased in the past using an Xbox Live account outside of their country?

Michael Newey: They will not be able to. From the launch of the Spring Update onwards we have to make sure that users cannot download any content that is not licensed in the country in which the console resides, even if they have downloaded it in the past.

Q: So what happens if I have an Xbox Live account registered in a country other than where I live? Will it get shut down?

Michael Newey: Your account won't get shut down. If you have created an account for a region other than where you and your Xbox Live, the account will still be active. However, you will no longer be able to download Xbox Live content licensed only for that country.

Q: How will Xbox know when an Xbox in a different country is trying to download content that is not licensed in that country?

Michael Newey: We will know from the location of the Xbox. It's important to note that it is the location of the console itself in conjunction with your Xbox Live account that will dictate which content you can download. Therefore if you have a US Xbox Live account and live in the US, but take your console on holiday to Europe, while you are in Europe you will not be able to download content from the US Xbox Live Marketplace. But, conversely, if you have a UK Xbox Live account and take your Xbox to the US, you will not be able to download content from the US Xbox Live.

Q: What if I live in a country like Greece that does not have Xbox Live, but I have an Xbox Live account registered to another country?

Michael Newey: While we do not advise or condone this since a user who does this is technically breaking a contractual agreement, users with this type of account will still be able to use it. However, they will not be able to download content from Xbox Live Marketplace.

Q: What does this have to do with games that are not available on Xbox Live Marketplace in Germany, like DOOM?

Michael Newey: Nothing. The German government has restrictions which regulate the distribution of certain content in Germany. We take these regulations very seriously indeed, and therefore certain content will not be available for download in Germany.

Thanks for your time Michael!

Right, hope that's a little bit clearer. Again, I can't promise anything, but I'll try to answer any other questions you may have. Stick 'em in the comments below.
not sure if its just tv shows & movies or other gaming DLC also included rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

hmm..from what i read..it's still the same thing that was mentioned b4: we'll only have problems with downloading stuff that has the digital entertainment rights thingy a.k.a hd tv shows and movies from the U.S.

i dunno if like, a certain demo is to be released only in the U.S/Europe, and we can still download that..that i'm not so sure..we'll have to wait for the spring update then!

P.S: wow, this spring update sounds pretty huge..i mean there's a whole lot of stuff updated ere. ohmy.gif

From my understanding, using proxy programs just might work. Just spoof up a US IP address and trick the access control mechanism into thinking that our box is residing in that region. rclxms.gif

But if this thing really can't be bypassed, just think of how pissed the soldier boys in Iraq will be tongue.gif

They can unblock their IP range. Not really a huge issue.

Damn, from what he's saying, there's no more marketplace content for us anymore in the future?

Spoofing the IP should work, but I guess we'll have to see how they implement. Let's just hope we don't wake up to a an empty Live Marketplace this Monday.

hehe guys..chill la..i doubt that they will block us from downloading anything other than stuff from the video marketplace.

the main reason they're checking IPs is to avoid people outside the U.S to download those region copyrighted stuff. AFAIK, demos, game DLCs, etc are free from these laws.

Yeah...looks like WE all have to wait and see..

Lord_Ashe...i agree with you...i dont download that much stuff but once in a while good stuff comes around like the GOW mappacks for instance...if that stuff gets taken away some of us will be handicapped in the multiplayer sessions meaning that we can be kicked out for not having the maps..

It'll hit May 7th in the US, but we might not necessarily get it tomorrow because of the time difference between Malaysia and US. Depending on what time they release it in the US, we will either get it tomorrow or Tuesday.

Ok! Latest update on those modded console regarding the upcming dashboard update. For those who modded their consoles, it may be your last night to go on LIVE before the dashboard update comes on LIVE.

The Xtreme firmware crew just release a new version of their firmware version with a new patch regarding the dashboard update. So for those Samsung dvd drives, you guys are in good luck because there is a new update on the firmware but then if your dvd drive is a Hitachi, be prepared for the worst, there is no news on an updated firmware on the Maximus firmware for Hitachi...

So be prepared for anything ranging from BRICK-ed console to BAN of your precious GOLD account!

Good luck to all those who modded their console. thumbup.gif

According to what I've read, the spring update will make the console refuse to boot the pirated games, not brick the console.

Um, they still can go to Xbox Live, and they still can play Original games. From what I read, the update will make the console give "Dirty Disc Error" when it detected pirated games and refuse to boot.

We'll know for sure tomorrow. smile.gif

Modders Beat Microsoft to the Punch: Xtreme v5.3 WIP

QUOTE
I spoke with Commodore4Eva who is coding the updates for the Xtreme firmwares and he did a quick Q&A with me

* Gameswank: With a current working firmware, why is there a need for a new version of the Xtreme Fw?
* Commodore4Eva: It was let known to me that MS received a report on how to detect backup games sometime ago and were working on it for the dash update, so I thought it timely to release this firmware this weekend

* Gameswank: You say that you had some inside info that the spring update would have the ability to detect and possibly ban 360 modded users from their console and or XBOX Live?
* Commodore4Eva: The method won't detect modded drives but can detect a backup disk and make it not boot, banning someone for a copied disk would be harsh and damaging to MS themselves both in revenue and popularity

* Gameswank: Thanks for your time; I better let you go so you can make some gamers happy! Oh by the way when can expect the new Xtreme V5.3 Patch to be released?
* Commodore4Eva: Saturday night at midnight before Microsoft gets a chance to release theirs

Currently Version 5.3 of the Xtreme Firmware will only support the Samsung series of Xbox360 DVD drives. Though I am told other versions are currently underway, also beta testers have been testing this new version for a week now, and Im told they have a system where they test it and report any bugs before general distribution. So come release everything should be fine.

We also managed to get a little info on a few of the new features of the Xtreme firmware V5.3:
* Support added for DVD drive to Report as Hitachi 79
* Disc-Jitter added for Challenge Types 5/7 to avoid possible replay detection.

Which part do you want to know? The Spring Update will add support for Live Messenger, and since Live Messenger on PC supports messaging with Yahoo Messenger's contact, I assume that Live Messenger on Xbox 360 will do the same.

What's the rush? Not really looking forward to the new update actually...
I dun see much improvements to the GAMING experience, just makes things more difficult for us.

Most the new stuff is more for other purposes, Live Messenger? Better to do it on the PC/Notebook while gaming ler... Its still 1 on 1 chat only... Would be super if we can have mutli-chat in a single channel.

For sure when the PC is on, it won't be for just IM. But for communication purposes, nothing beats having a PC these days. I just cant do the 'gamepad typing thing' or having the extra keyboard around.

Plus sometimes it just screws ur box up whenever u press the guide button just to check/reply messages.

Unless they find a way to smoothen things out... there's still the Fall Update to 'FALL' back on tongue.gif

Dun think if MS wanna brick ur box and ban your ACC so soon. You are still paying for LIVE to play online games. And the box was SOLD thru the proper channels before its was TRANSMOGRIFIED anyway.

Prolly later when they feel they have snuffed SONY's PS3 out of the competition.

Just 0.20 from me.

Last time on Xbox 1 they ban the console, not the account. You can still use the account on other unmoded console.

It's not published on the website yet. Still showing the January update.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemus...wareupdates.htm

It's around 6 megs. With my current connection to Live now, I guess it's safer to download it from the website.

It should work fine on Asian set. I've downloaded backward compatibility updates from that site few times before and it work fine on my Asian console.

WRT to the Dash update...we don't have final date this week, but I am hoping to get more solid information tomorrow.

So, he don't have any idea when the update is going to be released, but he seemed certain that it'll come out sometime this week, and he'll have more information about it today.

More on Xbox LIVE Marketplace Content
QUOTE

Just reading through the comments on the last post, and I want to say that we appreciate the feedback.  We're all taking a look at the comments here, and in other places online.

I really wish there was an easy answer (i.e., exactly when new content is coming to your country), but in the end, we're doing this so we have the ability to do even more digital distribution of content worldwide in the future.  Bottom line is that if we can't honor our commitments to content publishers, they won't release any content to us.

Graeme Boyd, from the UK Xbox Team, says this in a blog post he put up earlier:

I understand that there's often great content that you, me and my cats want on the US Marketplace that isn't on any of the European Marketplaces - but if people are able to download content in countries that it's not licensed for, people get upset, content gets pulled, cool new content doesn't get uploaded to Marketplace, and everyone ends up unhappy. [...]
One important thing to note - if you have in the past downloaded content from an Xbox Live Marketplace in a country different to that in which you live, that content WILL remain on your hard drive. It's yours for keeps. But you will not be able to download any more.

And another important point: If you do have an Xbox Live account registered in a country other to that in which you live, that account will not be closed down. It will continue to exist and work and you will need to keep paying any pending subscription fees. The only difference is that you will no longer be able to download licensed content from that country's Xbox Live Marketplace.

In addition, Graeme interviews Michael Newey, Group Product Marketing Manager for Xbox Europe, in a blog post he put up today.  Worth a read:

The more i read, the more i think it's just restricting US TV show & Movies... hmm.gif

it's because of US tv show & movie. but now games content also got dragged down the censorship board. thats mean this games content won't be available to you because we haven't (or lazy to) make an agreement with with your country or bla bla bla.... cry.gif

Rumor: Dash update coming tomorrow

QUOTE
Monday's sun is setting and we still have yet to hear from Microsoft about the Spring dashboard update. But talk is a flutter over on the Xbox.com forums from Xbox Live members who've contacted customer support and are hearing that the update will roll out tomorrow, May 8th. Some even heard from CS managers a 3:00AM pacific time frame for when the dash update will be released. We of course can't confirm such talk, but we aren't expecting the update to be released today anymore, so tomorrow is the next best thing. Any fanboys talk to Xbox CS and hear something different?

So the update is supposed to come May 8, at 3am PST? That's roughly May 8, 6pm in Malaysia. smile.gif

Edit:

May '07 Update News

I just heard from the Dashboard team that we'll have to wait at least another day for the Dashboard update to be released. The update is not being released in the next 24-hours. That is all I know at this time, but I'll get more information tomorrow afternoon (PT) and I will update this post as needed. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Thats good news if its coming today. We cant wait no longer.

Probably, the main reason why they're not releasing the update on time is because of the Xtreme crew has released a new version for the samsung drives. So, they're acting on it.

While waiting for the update, why not take this as a last opportunity to download the following FREE media contents:

South Park Season 8 Episode 1,
Skyland Season 1 Episode 1,
Pacman episode in TV Shows and
Los Angeles is Burning by Bad Religion under Music Videos. rclxms.gif

Better be quick we only have hours left tongue.gif .

The features that I'm excited about are:

- Low-power mode when downloading
- Auto-shutdown when download complete
- Black level IRE fix (if it's included)
- Live Messenger

Well, that being said, having a notebook/PC will definitely be more convenient. Dun think u can use wireless keyboards with the 360 to minimize on unsightly cables.

Esp if u do u gaming in the living room.

Seems, as long as your KB is HID compliant(non bluetooth), 360 can use all wired/wireless keyboards.

Rumor: Dash update coming tomorrow
So the update is supposed to come May 8, at 3am PST? That's roughly May 8, 6pm in Malaysia.  smile.gif

Edit:

May '07 Update News

I just heard from the Dashboard team that we'll have to wait at least another day for the Dashboard update to be released. The update is not being released in the next 24-hours. That is all I know at this time, but I'll get more information tomorrow afternoon (PT) and I will update this post as needed. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ May 8 2007, 02:19 PM)
Thats good news if its coming today. We cant wait no longer.

Probably, the main reason why they're not releasing the update on time is because of the Xtreme crew has released a new version for the samsung drives. So, they're acting on it.
*
what i'm scared of they are rushing in to put some changes at the last minutes. and god know what will happen if there's a mistake along the line... maybe some bricked console...

MS will never rush a quick patch without testing it first, so the delay most likely has nothing to do with the chip modders.

Anyway for the wireless keyboard front, let's put it this way, if your keyboard works in windows without needing any drivers, it'd most likely work on the 360 without any problems.

You don't have to buy a new controller. It's attachable to the bottom of current controller.

Spring07 Update Tuesday 8/15th?, Disc-Jitter Check?, Leaked Notes
>> We got several hints (including from people calling support) that the Xbox360 Spring 2007 Update will be released Tuesday May 8th, but some other sources told us it's coming next Tuesday (May 15th). One month ago Microsoft said they would release it "in the week of May 7th" ... and history shows they like to release dashboard updates on Tuesdays. May 8th, 15th or somewhere in between ... anyway it shouldn't be too far away anymore.
The list of new features in the Spring 2007 Update didn't change since the official announcement last month.

XBL Spring Dash Update at Least 24 Hours Off
A little longer to wait for chatting with MSN buddies.
By Dan Dormer, 05/08/2007

To ease gamer anxiety, Major Nelson announced late last night that the spring dashboard update is "not being released in the next 24-hours." This update adds chat functionality, a new "marketplace" blade, tweaked background downloading, a specific achievement unlocked display and establishes regional content locks for Video Marketplace goods. The official press release stated the update would be available "the week of May 7," so Microsoft still has time before gamers grow completely restless. While 360 owners wait, they can check out 2 new videos on XBL showing the ins-and-outs of the new features.

If you're having trouble finding them, here's a road map: demos and game videos --> game trailers --> gaming community --> behind the scenes --> game trailers --> voila!

For all those just joining us and worried that our slow internet connection might brick ur box during the update.

Don't worry.

The update is done in 2 phase
- Downloading
- Updating

First phase it'll say "Update is being downloading, don't turn off bla bla bla.."
If something bad happens at this point of time.. you'll be ok.

2nd phase it'll say "Applying update, don't turn off bla bla bla" at this point of time if anything bad happens YOU ARE F********

So try not to do it in the middle of a rainstorm! wink.gif

Aiya , no need so worry about the internet connection while you can update it by downloading through your pc , and then burn it into a cd for the 360 to read.

It's still not available for download on Xbox.com sad.gif

Don't wanna update via Xbox Live, using campus' connection right now, very unstable and might disconnect at any time.

But just be careful, just a word of warning to those with modded consoles. Banning after updates happened before on the xbox1.

Damn.... I'm not sure whether my eyes playing trick on me, but I can say that the colors are a bit more vibrant now.

Under Display options, there's a new menu called Reference Levels. You can change it to Standard, Intermediate and Expanded. What do they mean anyways?

As for resolution options, sad to announce that 16:10 resolutions are not in place.

As for content restriction, it seems like it's still not in place yet. Tried downloading some trailers via my US account, everything seems to be working still.

The online marketplace looks so much better now, with more information on screen and better organization.

I have also tried the background downloading, and it works as advertised. I turned the Xbox off (no fan, no sound) and it's still downloading. The middle power light on the Xbox kept on blinking to indicate that it's still doing something.

Oh, one more thing, AVI's still not supported. Sigh...

Downloading via Live's pretty safe. It will only update once the download has been completed.

It's not like I'm worried about bricked console due to unsuccessful download, but rather the matter of convenience. The connection here is pretty bad that I got "couldn't download update" error every few seconds, resulting me have to re-sign in to get the update prompt again, and continue downloading the update.

If I download the update on my PC, at least I can use download manager.

The download from the website is around 6 megs. I guess it's around that size from Live too.

Took me like 5 minutes to complete the whole thing.... when will it be available on the website anyways?

//

From my TV, reference level seems to affect the darkness and contrast. Maybe it's just me.

Check on page 15 (I post something about those with modded consoles)

And one more thing, even though u can update for now, delayed banning happened before on the xbox1.

It works like a time-bomb. They set the time, for instance 10th of May and BOOM!

Updated!

I can confirm that the color is so much better on my LCD now. The colors are deeper and black is blacker!

Too bad... it seems that Ms is still ignoring the fact that the 1680x1050 resolution is getting popular.

PS: the low power download mode is not still not exactly low power at all. The fan is still on.

IINM, you have to "turn off" your console to access the low power mode. The power light will blink to indicate that the machine is still running.

QUOTE
- Console can be set to turn off after downloads to save energy.

I want to say something about the last bullet point. What this means is that you can queue up your downloads and turn your console 'off.' When you turn it off during a download, you are actually switching your Xbox 360 into low power mode and the power light will blink very slowly as it continues downloading. After all the downloads are complete, the blinking light will stop and the console will automatically turn itself completely off. Downloads done.

OK... confirmed, content previosuly streamed via ORB and TVersity ain't working no more, I wonder if it's a codec issue or some sort of protocol changes, in any case.. NOT GOOD at all!

In any case.. the 360 now plays MP4 container, MPEG4 Video Stream AAC audio stream files

Reports from the net indicate that the modded box still runs fine with the update but that doesn't mean that Microsoft is doing nothing. With Xbox 1, they did not straight way ban the modded console when they connect to Xbox Live, banning happens after a few days or weeks.

So if you're willing to take the risk, go ahead and update.

As much as I like to say that I have 2 working balls, I'd rather stuff my manliness and kneel to the RM1700 price tag.

I'm not taking any risks. I'll wait a week before deciding whether it's safe to update or not. Might flash my fw by then. Till then, it's Gamerscore gathering session for me. See you guys sometime later!

OK... confirmed, content previosuly streamed via ORB and TVersity ain't working no more, I wonder if it's a codec issue or some sort of protocol changes, in any case.. NOT GOOD at all!

In any case.. the 360 now plays MP4 container, MPEG4 Video Stream AAC audio stream files
*
Yesterday tried streaming from Nero Media Home and it worked, though problems with audio sync. After this update, it doesnt work anymore.

ok.. would like to share that modded console is fine with this update.
was holding to my left..*cough* ..err KEKACANG when downloading just now.. no problemo at all.. (at least for me)

the marketplace blades is nice.. but there're too many redundant views.. can see/view the same menu from all over the place.. not only from marketplace blades. i guess they havent overhauled the whole menu button placements in this ver yet.

the bad side is majority of the readily *cough* available divx/h.264 encoded files doesnt work.

Seems you'd need to download the Optional Media Update for playback of AAC audio and MPEG4 video. Downloading as we speak, will update after i test with my copy of Bikini Destinations in 720p MP4 video later. whistling.gif

update: Yeah! Works perfectly, no need to encode to different formats for playback on PS3 and Xbox360 anymore since they both playbacks MP4 now. rclxm9.gif

Man...i luv this update....now my sharp G7 can accept 1080p resolution through analog connection on dvi-i input, heaven on earth when u can enjoy 1080p for both xbox 360's games and hd-dvd movies (which was limited to 1080i for hD-DVD before through component input).

The colour reproduction for HD-DVD is so natural, with no red push at all at default setting, if compared to the previous setting on component input,...now...what pissed me off is the review by engadget that claims that tehre is no justifiable different between hdmi input on elite and the component input on normal xbox 360 for either xbox 360 games and HD-DVD movies, its either that person is drunk or blind while doing the PQ testing....dudes...ive been enjoying the 1080i resolution for HD-DVD movies for several months, and the truth is..there is a justifiable difference between 1080i and 1080p fro HD-DVD, and i blame most of the fault is on the component input connection with too much red push, that requires a calibration for high backlight setting...reviewers nowadays is hard to be trusted...peace

With the reference thingamajig, the contrast and black levels on my Philips LCD just took on a huge jump. Couldn't believe my eyes till I loaded GOW.

Huge bump and update!!!

As promised, now with the Spring Update 2007, we now have 3 pre-determined black level setups for us to play with.

"Standard" appears to be the default setting we've been using.

"Intermediate" doesn't seem to have a huge difference.

"Expanded" is EXACTLY what I've been wanting and looking for. Natural deep black levels and VERY VERY VIVID colours.

Finally, the age long woe for LCD monitor users is now put to rest.

Those of you who are able to, please post some personal screenshot comparisons of your own as well as your personal opinion and experiences.

Microsoft has sorta fixed the VGA problem, I'm using the Expanded settings and it works well with my Philips 19' CRT monitor, the colours come alive and black levels are impressive. Besides this, even the compatibility list has been updated as well, I can play DOA 2 Ultimate on my XBOX 360 in widescreen in 720p. Yay. drool.gif

For those interested, IMO, the "Intermediate" setting is pointless.

There are two and ONLY two standards of IRE black levels: 7.5 (Standard) and 0 (Expanded).

Intermediate is sorta like '3.75' IRE level which is sorta like a custom unnatural setting and imo, pointless.

Yeap, no more tweaking the 'secret' menu in my 2407 A04 to get natural blacks and colours.

I'm so glad to be able to restore all the default values within the secret menu. I really hated to use it because any wrong values can permanently skew the monitor's colour and brightness.

Now all i need to do is to reduce brightness to 43 and I'm able to achieve PURE black.
Previously you had to down it all the way to 23-25.

Not too worried about TV and Movie content.

The Expanded setting really gives you that Blacker than Black feeling on LCDs smile.gif

EDIT: The setting really impacts VGA output of the 360 to LCDs. On component even on my LCD TV I've always been happy with the blacks.

Technically won't affect modded consoles but dunno whether can play online or not aje because from what I know, MS can do checks whether your disc is original or not at random via XBOX Live so that's your luck, if kena caught, you'll be kicked out from XBOX Live. If you're into online games, it's best to get ori games to be on the safe side.

Major Nelson listed the keyboard shortcuts to IM usage on the console on his blog.

What I like about the update so far:

(1) i like the little white arrow that appears besides gamertags on my Friends list that shows which games are joinable .... makes u just want to jump right in and play with them! tongue.gif

(2) i like that the disc tray now denotes what game title is currently inserted in the tray

(3) i like the achievement window / gamerscore summary that appears when u select the disc tray

(4) luuuv the low-power download thingy - first to benefit from this was the GRAW2 map pack

(5) Live Arcade has its own Friends list showing what Arcade games they're playing

Got the update yesterday. Haven't had the chance to mess around with the new IRE settings yet (time to recalibrate again....*groan*), but one thing I notice immediately is the downloads are much much much faster now.

Downloaded the GRAW2 map pack then played C&C3. By the time I finished about 3 missions the download is complete.

It will come in due time...I believe current update was never meant to ban modded console. (false alarm to the sparrow community, i believe some old-firmware 360 can vouch for that or so. Not sure.)

Anyhow...i still strongly believe the banhammer will come when Halo 3 is out. It's just part of the Microsoft culture. (releasing Halo every november/christmas, banning modded console late)
In Xbox 1, modders can't figure out how Microsoft work out their plan in banning - when where & how. So what makes people think Microsoft won't be able to ban in the future? Xb360 only 1 year 5 months old....

So till then, lets just enjoy the game no matter what the outcome is. icon_rolleyes.gif

I realized that the downloads are much faster as well...rmemeber the three videos detailing the SPring update?? i dowloaded those to check if content is still downloadable and hoe long it would take..altogether it was 300MB or so..quite large..all in high def..

Started out at 10 and left it as a background download and when i cam back at 10:45 i thought my 360 turned off by itself without fininshing the download..i checked it out and all the vids are there!!

I thought to myself..."Damn that was fast" Now im looking to the GOW map packs!!

Wouldn't work, each container has it's own way of storing data and the 360 doesn't understand how to decode those containers.

Spring Dashboard Update finally live [Update]
QUOTE
Unfortunately the Spring Update also locks out the ability to download content from foreign Marketplaces, which we reported on earlier. We initially discussed what this meant for countries with heavy censorship-laws such as Germany, however we've found out that some countries are being locked out from downloading content completely. Countries such as Greece and Brazil, who currently don't have a local Xbox Live Marketplace, are being completely locked out from downloading anything. Apparently they can still participate in online gaming but that's where the fun stops. We hope this encourages Microsoft to launch a Marketplace in those areas soon.
lucky us that Malaysia user base was too small that MS don't even bother to lock the marketplace, unlike what is happening to Greece and Brazil.

Its under the console setting..when u choose the resolution for your lcd TV, expanded option is highly recommended for most of the users.....luc this update so much for the vga connection.... thumbup.gif

Phew, luckily Malaysia isn't affected by this lockout. Guess we're too small for MS to care about. A blessing in disguise.
Downloaded an Idolm@ster theme, lol.
Now to decide if I should spend my MS Points on Catan or Pinball FX.

Well if there's enough in the LYN community who buy Catan then I think the potential for the human factor should be there. I'm thinking of making it my first purchase from the marketplace.
