Given that it is widely accepted that even M2 Bradley IFVs destroyed more Iraqi armor than even the M1 Abrams, I wonder how many armored vehicles did the Abrams actually killed in tank-on-tank battles? hmm.gif

The Tawakalna Division put up sufficient resistance that the M1s really proved their worth

Incidentally, the commander of the US armoured company at the famous 73 Easting battle is now Trump's Natl Security Advisor

Thai Army has ordered 34 armored personnel carriers 8x8 ZBL-09 (VN-1) armed with 30mm turret from China’s North Industries Corporation (NORINCO).

Each VN-1 will cost U.S. $1.7 million per vehicle – for a total of $58 million for the full purchase, which will also include 30 mm cannons, 7.62 mm coaxial machine guns and ammunition, Soha News reports.

According to the report, ZBL-09 will be delivered by 2020. The contract also includes delivery of 12,506 rounds of 30 x 165mm guns for the ZBL09 artillery shells.

The VN-1 is the export version of the ZBL-09, which is powered by a 440 hp diesel engine and can travel a range of 800 km. It can carry 7 to 10 persons.

In addition, the Chinese side has signed a deal worth 400 million baht (about $ 11.6 million) to modernize the armored vehicle repair facilities for Thai Army. And have also committed to organize maintenance and repair of Chinese-made armored tanks and tanks - 85 VT4 tanks and ZBL09 armored vehicles ordered by Thailand.

Thailand will also add another 10 VT-4 MBTs to its outstanding order of 28. According to IHS Jane’s report, this batch will cost $58 million. A contract to support the VT-4 acquisition is expected to be signed soon.

The VT-4 is China’s latest export-grade MBT. Weighing 52-tons, the VT-4 draws from the People Liberation Army’s (PLA) ZTZ-99A; it is armed with a 125-mm smoothbore cannon that can fire anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) and is powered by a 1,300 hp diesel engine.

Upgraded Republic of Singapore Air Force RSAF assets shows off new bumps

user posted image

Seen on a training flight over Singapore, this Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) AH-64D Apache attack helicopter is thought to have undergone a capability-enhancing mid-life upgrade.

user posted image

Visible on the portside stub wing is a dome-like protrusion which resembles the one seen on Israeli Longbow Apaches. A similar protrusion is believed to adorn the upper surface of the starboard wing stub on Singapore's upgraded Apache.

The upgraded RSAF Apache is thought to be the rebuilt machine (Redhawk 01-2069) that made an emergency landing in an open field in Woodlands on 30 September 2010. The prang severed the tail rotor though both pilots walked away unhurt.

The RSAF's first Apaches were delivered under the Peace Vanguard programme in 2002.

The AH's are Singapore's third armed helos tasked to support the Singapore Army's manoeuvre forces.

The first generation gunships were Bell UH-1 Hueys armed with the Emerson Electric MAMEE armament subsystem comprising 7.62mm miniguns and rocket pods. These were supplanted by the Eurocopter AS.550A2 Fennec light observation helicopter armed with a Giat 20mm cannon and CRV-7 rockets and the more powerfully-armed AS.550C2 light attack helicopter armed with the Helitow TOW-2A wire-guided anti-tank missiles.

The RSAF is progressively upgrading its stable of rotary-wing machines.

Future capabilities may include the wider fielding of a non-line of sight missile, a specialised munition that certain land forces units are not unfamiliar with.

A CH-47 Chinook featured in a Feb'17 MINDEF advertorial showed off lumps and bumps from an ongoing upgrade that enhances the Chinook's ability to link up with satellites and detect hostile emitters/beams from all quadrants.

Militants flee after foiled Philippine resort kidnap raid: Army rclxms.gif finally pinoys did something worthy

user posted image

MANILA: Militants who landed on a Philippine tourist island triggering deadly clashes with security forces had planned to stage a mass kidnapping, the military said on Wednesday (Apr 12) as it pursued five fighters still on the loose.

The army said the Abu Sayyaf group, notorious for a kidnap-for-ransom spree that has targeted foreigners, had planned to snatch up to a dozen tourists around Easter Sunday when resorts are packed.

The group of 11 gunmen landed by boat on Bohol - one of the country's top tourism spots - sparking a gunbattle with security forces on Tuesday that left six insurgents dead and also killed three soldiers and a policeman.

Five Abu Sayyaf gunmen, along with an unknown number of local collaborators, remain at large after the clashes which took place in a rural district, said military chief of staff General Eduardo Ano.

Ano said the gang, which arrived on three boats, had planned to acclimatise in the area and send scouts into resorts to scope out kidnapping targets. "They are expecting probably to kidnap four or five persons per boat, so at least 10 to 12 kidnap victims was their (overall) plan," he said.

The Abu Sayyaf launched the strike from their remote stronghold on the lawless southern Philippines island of Jolo, which is about 500 kilometres (300 miles) away from Bohol.

The island is just half an hour's boat ride from Cebu, another major tourism draw. The incursion is the first on a major destination in recent years by the group, which pledges allegiance to the Islamic State.

Ano said the Bohol plan was put into motion late last week as millions of local and foreign tourists prepared to hit the country's beaches ahead of the Easter holidays.

Philippine intelligence agencies got wind of the plot last week, and alerted the military and foreign counterpart agencies, though authorities lost track of the gunmen in the open seas.

The US and Australian governments later warned their citizens about possible "terrorist" abductions in Bohol and Cebu.

TOURISM FALLOUT?

Ano said the five remaining fighters fled after an overnight siege near a remote village. "They are all running for their lives," he said.

Helicopter gunships were used to bomb the militants, who fought back with high-end sniper rifles while holed up in a concrete house, according to officials.

Ano said that among the dead was a key Abu Sayyaf leader known by his alias Abu Rahmi. The claim could not be independently confirmed. He said Abu Rahmi was behind a 2015 raid on the southern island resort of Samal in which four tourists - two Canadians, a Norwegian and a Filipina - were snatched.

The two Canadian men were beheaded last year while the Norwegian man and the Filipina were freed unharmed.

Ano said Abu Rahmi's group also attacked a German couple on a yacht at sea last year, murdering the woman on board and taking the man hostage. He was later killed.

Authorities in Cebu, an island of nearly five million people, warned their citizens about potential kidnapping raids following the Bohol attack.

"It is unlikely that they have the operational capability to do further damage now. However, other elements may exist," Cebu city Mayor Tomas Osmena said on his Facebook page.

As the government moved to contain the fallout on the lucrative tourism industry, the military said it would repel similar incursions.

Authorities said some 100 residents had fled the fighting. Hoteliers and visitors told AFP the incident had not affected tourist traffic on the island, though there was increased police security.

Over the past year the Abu Sayyaf has been expanding its activities from its main Jolo base in the south where the military launched an offensive last year.

Its boat-riding gunmen have been boarding commercial and fishing vessels and abducting dozens of foreign crew members.

Zachary Abuza, a Southeast Asian security expert at the National War College in the United States, told AFP the Abu Sayyaf had been regularly staging long-range kidnapping raids, including in Malaysia.

"They clearly benefit from the woefully inadequate maritime capabilities of the Philippine navy and coast guard," Abuza said. "The amount of territory is very large, and these guys are moving on very small fast craft that blend in."

Chicken Out: Philippines' Duterte cancels visit to disputed South China Sea island

user posted image

MANILA: Philippines' President Rodrigo Duterte has cancelled a planned visit to an island the Philippines claims in the disputed South China Sea, after Beijing warned him against the visit.

The brash Philippine leader last week announced his plan to raise the Philippine flag in the island of Thitu and fortify it with barracks, setting off alarm bells.

rolleyes.gif "Because of our friendship with China and because we value your friendship I will not go there to raise the Philippine flag," Duterte said in a speech before the Filipino community in Riyadh late Wednesday.

"They said, do not go there in the meantime, just do not go there please. I will correct myself because we value our friendship with China," he said, adding that he might just send his son to the island.

China claims most of the South China Sea through which about US$5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes annually. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims. (http://tmsnrt.rs/1GHW1LC)

Duterte said Beijing warned him that "there will likely be trouble" if every head of state of contending parties will go to the disputed islands and plant flags.

The popular president is on a week-long state visit in the Middle East to facilitate trade and investments, and meet with Filipinos overseas. The Middle East is the second largest source of remittances, with more than one million Filipino workers sending home US$7.6 billion in last year, government data showed.

Duterte, who led the warming of ties with China, had blamed the United States for the current maritime tensions for not intervening to stop China building and arming artificial islands in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone.

The Philippines will reinforce, but not militarise, areas in the South China Sea controlled by Manila to maintain the geopolitical balance, Duterte said on Monday.

Exercise Panzer Strike 17

Latest Vid: https://www.facebook.com/oursingaporearmy/v...55060612176063/

Singapore Soldiers and the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) recently concluded Exercise Panzer Strike, a bilateral Armour live-firing exercise at the Oberlausitz Military Training Area (OMTA), Germany.

Tankees from the 1st Company, 48th Battalion Singapore Armoured Regiment (48 SAR) and their German Army counterparts from the Gebirgspanzerbataillon 8 worked together towards a successful exercise despite the language barrier. During the exercise, Chief of Army, MG Melvyn Ong, and Sergeant Major of the Army, CWO Teo See Keong, also visited troops in action. The opportunity to train in Germany with the German counterparts has allowed soldiers to apply what they have learnt in Singapore. They were also appreciative of the vast and open land which has allowed them to hone their skills and enhance their operationally capability. Rapid Dominance! #ArmyReadySoldierStrong

Key Points

• Indonesia has added the Type 214 class to a list of submarine platforms it is now considering
• Talks are in line with the Indonesian Navy's strategy of diversifying the mix of its future submarine fleet

The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Laut, or TNI-AL) has received an offer from Golcük Shipyard to supply a variant of the Reis (Type 214)-class diesel-electric submarine (SSK).

Multiple TNI-AL sources have confirmed with Jane's that meetings and presentations on the Type 214 class were conducted from early 2017 by a team of Golcük Shipyard and TKMS officials at the TNI-AL headquarters in Cilangkap near Jakarta.

The meetings will be followed by a visit of TNI-AL officials to Golcük Shipyard's facilities near Istanbul, where they will observe construction work on the Turkish Navy's first Type 214 boat, Pirireis (S 330). This visit is currently scheduled to take place from 7 to 12 May 2017, in parallel to the IDEF 2017 exhibition.

The Turkish Navy is anticipating the delivery of six Type 214 submarines from Golcük Shipyard. The first of-class is slated for launch in 2019, and all six boats are expected to be commissioned by 2025.

According to Jane's Fighting Ships , the Reis-class SSK features an overall length of 67.6 m, an overall beam of 6.3 m, and a hull draught of 6.0 m. The platform, which can accommodate a crew of 27 including five officers, has a top speed of 20 kt when dived, and 12 kt when surfaced.

The boat is equipped with bow, flank and towed array sonars, and eight tubes that can launch 533 mm torpedoes including the Raytheon Mk 48 Mod 6, and the Atlas Elektronik DM2A4.
