i'm not too concerned about the brand (most probably because i'm not too sure which ones are good), as long as the laptop is not made out of cardboard i don't really care i guess.

a friend of mine showed me an @ris laptop with ati9700 which he says retails for about 4.5k. can someone confirm this? Also looking at acer's travelmate 4000 something

i don't recommand anyone to buy local made a notebook. better go for dell, if $$ is a constraint

i have a few question, some expert pls help me:
1) celeron M and Pentium M also consider as centrino?<= NO, only Pentium M with 1MB L2 cache is considered as centrino processor
2) celeron M and Pentium M power consumption is big different? or same? <=Centrino processors consumes less power
3) can i buy from dell but don wan the original OS? <= IMPOSSIBLE!!
4) possible for 3.5k nb to use for 3dmax autocad?(although slow but still can accept right? <= With that price range, even a notebook with IEG2 can run autocad, rational rose (I supposed you are an engine student?)
5) pls recomeded a around 3.5k nb with
-posible-->centrino? pentium M? <= i recommand you to get Dell Inspiron
-long lasting batteries(at least 4hour)
-can use 3d max and autocad
-some gaming(not necesary)
-don too heavy
-must have wireless
-bigger harddisk is better
-screen size is better 14+ since working on 3D
-usb x 3 or more is better

1st of all, centrino is NOT a processor, centrino is just a mobile technology 'package' introduced by Intel, or in another word, marketing and it's quite successful =p

centrino mobile technology consists of:
1. Intel Pentium M processor whether the L2 is 1MB or 2MB, 400MHz or 533MHz,
aka Banias, Dothan & Sonoma
2. Intel PRO/Wireless Network Connection Family: 2100B/2200BG/2915ABG
3. Mobile Intel 915 Express Chipset Family: 915GM/PM/GMS & 910GML Express
or Intel 855 Chipset Family: 855GM/GME/PM Chipset

for more info can refer sniper's FAQ on Centrino (tho not updated yet tongue.gif)
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...dpost&p=2555392

2nd, there's no such thing as local made notebook in malaysia AFAIK, only the Brand name might sound local, but they get/contract their notebooks from the OEMs based in Taiwan. the same case for 'branded' notebook e.g Fujitsu, HP, NEC etc...

cheers. just my spamcents. rolleyes.gif

Looks like a decent deal for those with basic needs and budget. Which one is it - M2000 or V2000? Can you provide more details of the promo? Thanks.

The pdf brochures can be found here:

yeah... i think this nec m540 1800dr is the most worth buy compare with other brands in terms of its processor and video card. I think it is a good choice. If i have $$$ now, for sure i will grab it too...

u can do some survey in this week pc fair and bargain for the best price.

here's the notebook link:

there is another cheaper spec.. in only rm4699
all same but the only difference is.. 256mb ram, 40gb, 64mb video memory, dvd/cd-rw combo, ati mobility radeon 9600 and 802.11b mini pci

any one of these can be upgraded other than the ram and hdd?

i dont think they can be upgraded... the other diff is the proc speed, one is 1.6G another one is 1.8G.... huge price diff between these 2.

if u are searching for notebook which has powerful graphic card, may be u can consider compaq B3819, cheapest price i saw is RM5599. It is equipped with radeon 9700 128mb too.

But, in my opinion, M540 1800DR is more worth buy since it has larger screen, dvd burner, larger hdd (80G, not 60G) and faster proc just for the extra RM400, compared with B3819. The only thing is this model is not that popular in europe/us, may be it is a asia pacific model, which is same with B3819.

I havent see the actual product, so dunno how's the quality. I also dunno whether there is issue/prob with nec notebook too.

so, may be this coming pc fair u can get a good bargain.

ya.. i saw that compaq b3819ap today too.. it's rm5,999
but i dun like its color.. kinda creamy color.. easier to get dirty.. but other than that.. the spec are quite good too but if price-wise.. i'll have to agree to what u said.. nec is worthy to buy compare with compaq..

maybe i'll have a look around at the fair tomorrow.. and it will be my first time getting a notebook.. is there anything i have to pay attention to when buying a notebook?? like what to check or anything?? what kinda precaution/steps (whatever it is) i should take before actually making the payment??

thank thanks!!

btw, if u are not a gamer/designer, u may consider IBM R51 (1830KA3) which it's built quality is superb.... RM5188, with 3 years warranty.

if ask me between B3819 with M540, I will choose M540 which are the same price at RM5799.

Between M540 with Dell Inspiron, the main difference is the graphis card. One with 9700, another one with X300. there is not bench mark to compare mobile graphic. But, i think 9700 is more powerful.

If u consider dell inspiron 6000, may be u have late 1 week already bcoz last week dell got online coupon which give u rm1000 rebate after u configure I6000 over RM6500 which is very worth compare with M540 1800DR.

If u have decide I6000 and not in rush to own a notebook, may be u can wait till end of July, a week b4 pc fair 2. I think they will come out the coupon again.

notebooks with intel pentium m with centrino technology has different stickers on it.. some has the intel pentium m sticker while other has that intel centrino sticker?

i tot centrino is just a concept and every pentium m has that concept in.. so, why different stickerS?
