Can i add a subwoofer to my a300?

It’s a suprisingly underwhelming experience for me when i got the a300. But i’m used to listening to harbeth’s speaker so don’t think a300 is bad, just not great.

Plan to hook a cheaper sub such as Kef Kube b12, can you confirm/share how do i pair these 2 up?

You can but the only way I know how to involves sacrificing the bluetooth and volume control function of the speaker and it only works with RCA inputs

If you're saying you wanna use KEF Kube b12 then you'll need
- a method to control volume for both speaker and sub (It could be a TV remote volume, PC volume, or an external DAC with volume control)
- two RCA Y-splitter to split your signal to your edifier and your subwoofer

Here's a rough image I found online on how it's connected

That way you set both speaker and subwoofer volume to blend up to your taste, leave the volume setting and use your source as master volume to control both simultaneously.

I would recommend Edifier's own T5 subwoofer instead for a low budget sub since it has an RCA line out included so you can skip the y split and use the subwoofer line out instead as the splitter.
You will still need a way to control volume for both sub and speaker

Hope it helps notworthy.gif

Thanks and it helped immensely as i’m really confused in adding a sub wiring.

My setup currently: a300 is connected to a TV, the audio input source is the TV itself via optical cable.

Does it mean that if i use edifier’s t5 (since it has RCA lineout), i can just plug the subwoofer via RCA directly into my speakers and it would work? (Ie. Sub RCA into Speaker’s RCA?)

My only worry is t5 will not give the desired punch sad.gif It’s for a living room.

It sounds too complicated for me still to pair the a300 & kube b12, as my main volume control with this setup is via the a300 remote control.

KEF connection is limited to RCA in only. If you worry about the impact, with almost similar budget of KEF you can check SVS PB1000. You can do RCA input to SUB and RCA output from SUB to your active.

KEF 12B is a 12 inch sub vs SVS 10 inch but if you check their frequency range.. SVS PB1000 can dip lower and go higher freq (good for movies). If you prefer a seal sub (better for music), you can consider SVS SB1000 also.

vol control still is an issue because we are using RCA line output here.

Me too, from Dynaudio Floorstander to A300, feel less dynamic & not enough bass sad.gif . May be need preamp/receiver from source to A300 & Sub. I had Mirage sub from my HT.

I feel bad for still not really understanding it hah.

Does it mean: i should use my TV rca cable, to plug into svs pb1000 first? And then use another rca cable to connect the sub & a300?

I still don’t get it about the vol control but i think i’ll worry about it later as long as i know it’s not wasting $ to get a sub to pair with a300.

Thanks, very useful infos!

yes if you tv support for RCA out then easy.. u can just connect RCA to subwoofer and rca from sub to a300.
but most modern tv had remove rca out option

vol control u only can control for a300.. u cant control ur sub vol.. it has to be done manually still

Some TV has headphone out also. I think most modern TV already remove RCA but still keeping headphone out as an option.

Just check your tv before planning anything. If it's headphone out then you should be able to control volume with your tv remote.

Sounds quality wise how does A80 stack up against s2000 mk3?
Looking to pull the trigger on 1 of these for my desktop PC. Replacing my 10+years s330d, been with me since college
If both comparable I'll go for A80 due to it's size and aesthetic

If your tv dont have rca out, you can try this

TV > optical cable > DAC with preamp > rca cable > Subwoofer > rca cable > Edifier A300

Some dac have remote control function so you can control the volume of sub and speaker using 1 remote only.

I got my A100 pretty cheap from 11 Nov sale (Less than 1.7k - brand new), so I got the chance to risk/test it. Need another pair of speaker for small living room anyway.

This speakers is producing Balance and Clean sound (It capable to have very tight and wide bass depends type of music source you play), is different from S3000Pro signature, if you interested to know the different .

S3000Pro is exciting for overall use, A100 is a sound separation expert and you can't say the bass is not enough because i can get the similarity rumble low signature from s3000pro (depends how you position the speaker - how near to wall and how wide between the speakers. - I spent few days just to get it right.

A100 sound very clean, good separation and balance (is a good thing for music listening) and particular what hardware and music source you play, this is what I've tested with..

1. Dac (Optical/RCA/Bluetooth input)
2. Direct Bluetooth (iPhone/Samsung Note10+/iMac/Window 10 laptop and PC)
3. USB to USB direct (Nvidia shield Pro - Android)
4. Optical direct (Nvidia shield Pro - Android / Dac)

Result for connection type - This result came out surprisingly huge gap between connection source, kinda sad but it shine when using the right one so I'm glad because I really enjoy every bit of it. The sound is bigger and wider than it looks. I can move it down to bigger hall with it now.

1. USB and Optical - 5/5
- Best and only option to maximise the potential with enjoyable level.

2. Bluetooth - 3/5
- Best go with Android and Window devices. Sound doesn't right with Apple devices.

3. RCA - 1/5
- The fact is I thought it will be straight forward from the Dac(s) source but somehow the speaker did something internally which I don't understand (It has built in Dac and Amp) - it does sound flat, or maybe I done not enough test... who's know.

My final setup for the speakers.

Using Nvidia Shield Pro as a direct streaming media > HDMI > TV
Using Nvidia Shield Pro as a direct streaming media > USB > A100
Using in-apps Tidal (MASTER capable/on board Apps) / Spotify (Shield Direct/Cast/On board Apps) / Plex / Neflix / HBOmax / HULU / Disney+
With this setup I able to cast with any device including Android/Apples/Windows + Google assistance devices for Volume/PlayStop/Next/Back/What song and which apps to play.

Conclusion.
This is a good pair for entry level audiophile pair of speakers for music and not really suitable for movie - If you compare with speaker systems with center piece or sound bar. But it doesn't mean bad, you need to do lots of setup in your media player, for example Nvidia Shield and make sure is purely Stereo output only.

On computer desk use, no problem at all! As long as you don't mind the size.

Cheers.

How do you feel the difference on treble and female voice for both? Since 1 is using planar while another is ribbon.
For bass I assume you mean both sound the same? But A100 need some placement fine tune to get the same bass? If just put same place to S3000pro, how does A100 bass sound like?

Personally i do prefer A100 female vocal voice because it well refine.
S3000pro seems easier for me to position it and the bass definitely bigger and exciting than A100, as for A100 i did place nearer to the wall to get tighter wider bass. First i wish they're same but 5" and 6.5" seems like not logical... hahaha

l actually love both of them and A100 have very clean sound and the design i like.

same A100 owner here been using for months, with add on yamaha 10 inch subwoofer, A100 sound really transparent clean and clear. im using with pc sound card (creative AE-5 sound card) through the RCA connector, if use optical vs rca for my case the rca sound way more better. hmm.gif
yeah the positioning of this speaker really makes a big difference to the sound tho (back wall side wall etc) especially the bass differences.
