Hi guys, is Intel I5 3rd generation socket the same as the 7th generation socket? I mean can the latest motherboard still use the 3rd generation processor?

Nope. Only H61, H67, P67, Z68, B75, H77 and Z77 chipset motherboards are compatible.
That is up to you. A320 motherboards are cheaper but you cannot overclock and less connectivity.
I've never overclocked my cpu actually so i doubt i'll be doing that with this also and i'm just a casual gamer i dont expect like ultra settings. as long a minimun of 60fps with low settings will good enough for me.

Like I said, up to you. You can bump the CPU multiplier to (36-37) 3.6-3.7Ghz without needing to pump voltage. That's about free around 15-20% performance.

oh damn 15-20% is so good. Looks like i need to look into overclocking
need help to configure a gaming rig for my son, just rig without monitor & mouse & key board.
Budget: 3k+ Gaming : Stream game ie CSGold, lol, dota, fallout 4... I'm looking at Ryzen 3 1200 (with overclock) or 1300 with GTX1060 but seen may be out of reach due to recent price hike due to cypto mining... is there others alternative?
others question... is ryzen overclock to 3.7-3.8 good for gaming.. i like the extra juice that can squeeze from the ryzen processes + i5 is not value for money....
What is your recommendation for rig that can be used for next 3 years for gaming...
