You need to turn on XMP for the RAM. Ryzen 7 1700 base clock is 3Ghz, 3.7Ghz turbo.

Both readings are normal.

RAM you load XMP then check on CPU-Z again, some BIOS doesn't load it properly so you have to manually set.

I think Threadripper launches next month. It won't come cheap though.

I'm amazed at the Ryzen 3 benchmarks. However, I have a burning question there, how does it fare with productivity apps like GCC and Matlab? I'm a heavy user of GCC, Eclipse and Netbeans, and it is working very sluggish on my Celeron (1150) PC equipped with 8GB and an SSD. Will the Ryzen 3 or 5 actually cut down the waiting time into half, or even quarter?

I do not have any computers with Ryzen to borrow just to see the actual performance, sadly.

ryzen 3 is still a quad core proc. wont do magic. wel lbetter then your dual core intel..

more cores will make the work lighter. if you have the money the ryzen 5 1400 is a good price for performance since it is a quad core 8 thread proc. if you really are on a tight budget then the ryzen 3 1300 should be better then the celeron.

unless these programs are favoring single core raw performance then nothing much ryzen can do to help.

I've seen that the GCC works well with multi-core and multi-thread systems. The Ryzen 5 1400 is a pretty good deal, and I'm scouting for the further GCC and Matlab benchmarks further before I try to purchase the system.

From my experience. Matlab cannot make use of SMT. Bigger L3 cache yes. Therefore if you see an i5 vs i7 on same clockspeed, performance little slower on i5 because less L3 cache not because of hyper thread.
Got money, then you buy as many core you can afford. Matlab is compute intensive and heavy workload, it needs real physical cores, not logical cores. SMT only benefit lighter workloads.
SMT causes two processes to share the same CPU core, with fast context switching between the two processes. No additional computation resources are made available in this mode, so if both processes want access to the CPU then the two are going to compete for access, and on long term average probably each get a little under 1/2 of the work done that they would have gotten with dedicated CPUs

The motherboard I believe will be even more expensive than X299 for Skylake X . Look at the gigantic CPU socket. From the picture, it is as long as a typical DIMM slot.
Best selling point of Threadripper is the massive 60 usable PCI-E lanes to me. Imagine if I can do RAID-0 on 8 sticks of Samsung 960 Pro M.2 SSD. That kind of Storage speed is awesome .
And I still got enough PCI-E lanes for a high end GPU.

Never seen 1.5 . Maybe that's power saving feature.

Tomorrow last day of July. Still no sign of the Asrock ITX board. Looks like another false launch.

I found on eBay tho; RM780 for Asrock AB350 and RM1.1k for X370 ITX. Ships from UK.

Asrock Malaysia responded to my inquiry; they said the boards are stuck with Customs and will be at retail next week. Hope they will be available soon. I've got all my build parts ready, just need the ITX mobo and cannibalize a GTX970 from my Intel rig.

Ryzen here I come ! thumbup.gif rclxm9.gif
