Hahah... popular myth is that RC bites but it is due to bad genes and also bad breeding.... now breeding tame RC. So far I hear good feedback... only once a while they nip coz moody but then no blood or wounds.

Hahaha.... not RC bear like Syrian Bear.... the name of the RC was Bear.... Now I got 1 baby that looks like Bear heheheh....

Kembara, that is mottled dove? Your avatar looks like Mottled agouti....

Dove is like Carenys55's Plue. Hehehe.... Caren really love RCs now, bought 3 from me. Big thanks to her for giving them a good home.

hi friend,

I just back from Pet safari and PLC(sunway).

They now have alot of supreme Harry Hamster(RM17.60) and Prestige(RM17.30).

1 more thing, PLC selling WW at RM 13.00 for 1.

This is very cheat.

I saw a so call dominat RC(explain by the keeper) know how to throw him body back(overturn) and repeat this action couple of time. All ppl over that keep looking at him.
This is my 1st to see so cute action.
*
PLC is having a promotion, that is why cheap.... but some of their WW are underage.

Erm, that flipping action is caused by a genetic disorder.... it is through inbreeding. When choosing a hamster, avoid hamsters that do that. Looks cute and amazing but actually the hamster cacat a bit in the head.

In a way, it can be called gila ghahahh.... it is a genetic disorder. Pitiful that people use it to draw attention from the crowd and exploit them.

QUOTE
Behavioral Disorders
There are a number of genetic "disorders" which affect some hamsters in the US.  I do not have research on them nor can I confirm the method of transmission of the disorders.  I do know from my experience and the experience of others that they run in family lines.  They are not confined to certain color or pattern genes.  Above all, I know that they are not desirable traits and should not be perpetuated.  (I would love to have any research on these if people are able to find any.)  They also seem to be involuntary.  The hamster cannot stop the behavior.  Thus, hamsters that exhibit any of these traits should be retired as breeders.  Their parents and siblings should also be retired.  Additionally, anyone who has purchased from these lines with the intention to breed should be notified of the problem.  Unless the traits are extreme, the hamsters would not have to be put down but can live out their life as pampered pets.

The first is "back-flipping." This is common in the Campbells.  The hamster starts on his feet, does a complete flip backwards, and again lands on his feet.  Sometimes they add a bit of a twist and land facing a different direction than they started from.  (This is different than a hamster who falls on his back and may roll or "swim" around the cage on his back.)  Back flipping does not usually show up until they are at least 5 weeks of age - sometimes later.  With some, it gets extreme.  They back flip during all waking hours.  For these extreme cases, it is best to have a vet put them down.

The second is "pacing." Again, around here, this is a common Campbells disorder.  These hamsters run back and forth across one side of the cage.  Often, they only run back and forth across a few inch path.  They will often beat down the shavings in that area with their incessant pacing.  Again, this trait is undesirable, and these animals (and their relatives) should not be bred.

The third is "lap running." These hamsters run circles around the perimeter of the cage.  They too will beat a path into the shavings.  They and their relatives should be retired from breeding.

The fourth is "waltzing" hamsters.  This can appear in dwarves or Syrians.  Personally I have only seen it once, and it was in a dwarf which someone brought to a show.  This young hamster ran tight circles.  It could not walk a straight line.  Since these symptoms can also be caused by curable problems (like ear problems), these problems should be checked out by a vet.  If the vet does diagnose this condition, it is probably best to put down any animals with an extreme case.  Again, the parents, siblings, etc. should be taken out of breeding and all buyers of animals from this line must be notified.

The fifth is deviant behaviors.  In particular, a number of people have reported that their females have chewed the ears off of their pups and their cagemates.  This generally happens when the female is nursing a litter and can happen when the pups are very young.  We know that the missing ears are not a genetic defect both since the male's ears also tend to disappear at the same approximate time and we have sometimes seen the pups' ears before they disappear.  It is not a common problem, but I have seen it here on two occasions and heard of it from other breeders.  We separate the pair so that the female does not have further litters and do not breed further from the line.  The females seem to do fine once the litter is weaned, so this may be a stress associated with raising litters.  Another deviant behavior which may be similar in nature is parents chewing of the limbs of their pups.  We're not sure the cause, but this does happen occasionally.  In any case, these are undesireable behaviors which you would never want to perpetuate.

The smell is from the herbs. All brands that are good have a strong smell.... so just tolerate and don't complain coz that is already one of the best foods to feed in the market. Be thankful that you can get that for your robos.

Sigh, I came back from Pet Family....

Panda Hamster indeed.... rubbish name. They are not even black and white. They are just mottled Russian Campbells... not even black and white also. Either Agouti or Argente or black.... The name is just a name to attract customers only. The colour is not even what a panda hamster should look like too.

This is why, better don't buy from petshops.... they sell them in wrong colours and sometimes wrong species also.

my hamster will sometimes walk on his hind legs, then when cant support anymore, will fall on his back. its normal right?
*
It depends on what it is doing.... if it is looking up coz you are near the tank, quite normal coz it wants to see what is above.... but if it does it without anyone near the tank, just go on and on doing it continuously for some time, means got problem.

may be not biasa with new owner,so little bit scare, who know??
bcoz some of my hamster did that...tame with me..but sometime with other not tame
i think its related to our hand smell
may be they recognized their owner smell only la
*
Yups, this is true. This is why we normally advice people to not touch the hamster on its first day and first night. Let it get used to new surroundings first, then only intro handfeeding, then proceed to handling. This is so the animal is not stressed. Tame or not tame, it is the same when bringing home a new animal.

QUOTE(silencio87 @ May 26 2007, 12:44 AM)
hmm..i need to know this..I just got myself a kitten. And ive been making sure that my hammies are far far away from my kitten. My kitten isn feeling that well yet due to new environment. I was told that hamsters are not very protected (health) compared to cats/dogs. They dont need injections or watsoever unlike cats/dogs. Is this true??I was also told not to get to attached to hamsters ,i mean putting them close to our face ,because they maybe healthy but they are still a rat species...so,i guess i cant really let my hamsters run free now..because i dont want them to spread sickness to my new kitten...or i still can?
I need to know whether hamsters can cause sickness to us??
*
Actually, captive bred hamsters rarely have infectious diseases that can pass through human.... what is dangerous to our health is old poo.... if the poo is left for a very long time without cleaning, it can cause bacteria and mold to grow, which can go into our air and cause a bad smell and also allergy reactions to some people. Erm, hamsters can't spread disease to cats lah... especially captive bred.

Your kitten can catch diseases from catching and eating wild rats.

Erm, you are proud of your hamster that killed a cockroach? Do you know that a cockroach carries lots of bacteria, is a very dirty insect that can pass on germs to the hamster? Or worst case, the cockroach may have some pesticide residue on it and the hamster eats it and gets sick from the pesticide.... I won't be proud, I'd be worried and monitor him for any changes.

Hamster competition? You mean hamster show is it? Firstly, there is a need for an official club. Next, the place to hold such competitions... then later a judge that judges by the standard of each hamster species.... eh, not something simple to do now when there is no organization.....
