the subscriber without HD service will loss many ch if that really happen. i guess they will stay simulcast the SD channel for sattlelite but they will force subscriber to upgrade byond. Maybe all SD channel will be only availble in Mpeg4 in the future.
Astro can only fully migrate to MPEG4 for SD channels once they really plan to discontinue use of legacy Astro boxes, so all customers that still using legacy Astro boxes must get their STB replaced to at least a B.yond HD box if they wish to continue watching Astro. Bear in mind that upgrading STB to B.yond HD box
does not mean you must pay extra every month by subscribing to HD. Of course, the customer service will try their best to convince you to subscribe HD (because if you agree to do so, they will get commission) by saying all sort of stuff such as "why upgrade to B.yond box but don't want HD?". So if you subscribe to HD, Astro will ultimately earn more money.
So basically, you don't need to think/feel that replacing your legacy Astro box to new B.yond box is a bad thing, UNLESS:
i) You plan to cancel Astro soon because upon upgraded to B.yond HD box, you will get 12 mths contract. Or 24 mths for PVR box.
ii) Not willing to pay for installation fee, range from RM50 to RM150, depending on promotions and your subscription. Sometimes can be free too.
iii) You plan to do something "not so legal" such as card sharing or take your Astro smart card and insert to someone else's Astro box because you subscribe more channels than him/her.
iv) You prefer to use old technology stuff.
I believe that one day it will happen where HD service will be included as part of Astro subscription (in other words, free/no additional charges). It is just a matter of when.
Most of pay TVs around the world already included HD service (customer no need to pay extra for it). Same goes to Hypp TV and also the ABNxcess (no longer in service).
Astro still put HD service as if it is a premium service that customers would need to pay extra for it. Why? Well... Astro has no competitors, they can do anything they like to make sure they keep gain profit, APRU keep rising, etc.
