QUOTE(horns @ Jan 11 2018, 08:04 PM) oh haha yeah maybe you hit the space bar too hard. that level of rattling is not normal. when they're at stock, the space bars of my gk64s do rattle, but they're not that loud. (the switch was unlubed cherry mx red) aiseh... super blur case me... I thought I was using box black for my space bar and actually I was using box brown. So, I switched it last night and it's slightly better. Or maybe it's just placebo. hahaha... Them sponges in the space bar always keep popping out. A pain to always have to poke them back in. sigh...now i still feel slight rattling when i tap the bar lightly. also, i found that kailh box linear makes relatively louder noise than cherry mx and gateron linear when keys bottom out. edit: ok now i have clipped and lubed stabilizers for space bar installed. it's making relatively less noise compared to unclipped. (now still without sponge) i guess it will be better when i put the sponge in. (now lazy) note that it's still not as good as varmilo's. i started to think about replacing stock stabilizers, because one thing i noticed about them in gk64: the one i installed for the space bar is kind of loosed when they are secured to the top plate. i guess this might be the main cause to rattling effect. I also switched back to Cherry profile PBTs instead of the GMKs ABS. Sounds definitely better now. Not just the space bar, everything sounds better. Generally, I think I like the sound of linears better than tactile/clicky. They sound more solid definitely. So the project for this weekend will be lubing, clipping and also placing some sound dampening material in the case. |

QUOTE(pizzaboyj @ Jan 12 2018, 12:26 PM) hello folks, long time lurker, but not new to the scene i guess, mostly active on r/mk and the fb group hello and welcome. i am also like you in terms of learning stuff about mkbs haha it's been quite a while, but it's really a nice journey.current board is an anne pro w/ gat browns + dsa dolch caps but im slowly buying parts to build my own custom, maybe kbd8x or kbd75 i have an igk61 from the reddit GB on order mostly as a tester board im a linear guy but enjoy the occasional gat yellow also very interested in the new box navies because why not! teach me senpais hopefully one day i have time to build some boards for myself too. (now you have mentioned it i still have some bags of switches untouched, including gat yellow) QUOTE(antaras @ Jan 12 2018, 01:18 PM) aiseh... super blur case me... (with gk64 it's really easier than boards with soldered switches) oh sweet you like the sound of cherry profile thick pbt caps with linear switches also haha (for me the stock caps for gk64 are actually fine, and they're very nice to type on tbh) with mods that you have mentioned, it will be definitely better than the original gk64. to me the only problem now is its space bar and modifiers. i will share what i have found out later haha |

(now you have mentioned it i still have some bags of switches untouched, including gat yellow) the thing for us is that because kustoms are so expensive, its either we get gud at soldering (which parts are exp too!) so that we can do as we like, or we have to resort to tester boards before buying one and keeping it for life lol the market isnt that big enough for kustoms imo |

(with tester boards or other means) the more important part is to make sure outcomes work fine. i have tried few times, and my work was bad, but they worked hehe as for the costs, yes it's relatively high if you are serious about making good boards for yourself. (still, it's really not that high if you compared to some other hobbies) the custom board market is always a niche market. not many are interested in building one because of a number of reasons. costs might be a significant one, especially where there is a learning curve about each component in the board, if you really wanna know most options that you can have in a more practical way. however the recent introduction of affordable CIY boards makes the learning process a relatively painless and time-saving one. actually true sifus here have suggested a number of nice and affordable prebuilts to help build up a good reference for noobs (i.e. what makes a good board, qualities and characteristics of components that we need to pay attention to, etc. not just superficial stuff like price), but it still take a while for them to get it (like me lol) |

QUOTE(horns @ Jan 6 2018, 05:26 PM) afaik, no. i really wanna move from my filco browns to clears now that i do a lot more typing and coding instead of gaming hmm.rare switches are usually not popular, because they are relatively expensive by costs imo. that's why not many, if any, manufacturers build pre-builts with them. (unless they build something that are exclusive, e.g. those found in massdrop) just got some o-rings for my browns though. |

QUOTE(horns @ Jan 12 2018, 06:51 PM) (now you have mentioned it i still have some bags of switches untouched, including gat yellow) Okay. Managed to placed "sound dampening" material (basically it's just those anti-slip you posted previously), lubed the stabilizers and also placed sponge as shown in the video tutorial. I can say the outcome is very good. The difference is very visible (or in this case, audible). haha... Managed to fix the rattling space bar but still some minor rattling like you said. Perhaps it's the stabilizers. I found that it will rattle more if you tap the right side(right above the stabilizer) of the key compared to the left side. It happen to all the keys with stabilizers. Left shift, Backspace, Enter and the space bar. No idea why though. By the way, out of the mods I did, I think the sponge effect is the least effective. Still it did offer some help. Or maybe I didn't manage to get it at the right position. hmmm...ok i was confused why your box black sounded so different from mine haha right it's best to insert sponge during assembly. inserting sponge like previous video work but you will need to do it again when it's off. I read about the band-aid fix/mod as well. Clipping and band-aid will be the next round of mod! |

I read about the band-aid fix/mod as well. Clipping and band-aid will be the next round of mod! hm not sure now, because with clipping, the rattling has been further minimized, and now it's like happening evenly when i tap in the middle of sides of space bar; the same to modifiers. yes i feel the same, sponge effect is somewhat minimal, but every small improvement helps contribute so i will do it anyway haha QUOTE(pizzaboyj @ Jan 13 2018, 10:12 PM) i think when one is getting into the game, you really need to start with either a hotswap board like the gk64/61 if youre serious on switches, or if you just wanna dip your feet in, the regulars (ducky, tecware, cm masterkeys/qfr, etc) are decent options you're right i do think that it's good for beginners to have a CIY board. switches are one of the common basics for mkbs that give significant impacts to typing experience. by experimenting different switches personally, you will get a good grasp of the different switch characteristics offered, with other contributing factors set to the same (using the same CIY board, so everything else is of the same configurations). furthermore you can test different mods very conveniently compared to conventional ways. once you have a good idea about the combos that you wanna have with a board, then you can go on getting all necessary parts and start building the actual custom board that you want.also finding decent soldering station/irons that is hakko compatible and has decent performance at a low price is hard to find i guess, so the bar of entry to making your own custom isnt very low either :< there isnt much options besides aliexpress (or taobao if you can work out its shipping imo to dip the feet in, it's better to get boards that show better qualities as a whole. to me, filco, varmilo, and ikbc represent. (maybe ducky also) for soldering tools, i just use the cheap ones (for very simple tangan-gatal mods only) i'm lucky because i have friends that if i screwed up they still help to fix stuff. (so far so good; the processes are still manageable so i never ask for their helps yet) |
