Indonesian police vow crackdown on Islamic vigilantes
![]() JAKARTA: Indonesia's police chief vowed on Monday (Dec 19) to crack down on any vigilantes trying to enforce Islamic rulings before Christmas, saying religious edicts do not amount to law in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation. His remarks came as religious hardliners attempted to stop retail workers from wearing Santa hats inside malls, saying the festive garb is un-Islamic. Indonesia's highest Islamic council issued a fatwa - or religious edict - making it sinful for businesses to force their Muslim staff to wear Christmas attire. The ruling inspired dozens of hardliners to rally outside malls in Indonesia's second-largest city Surabaya at the weekend, earning a sharp rebuke from police chief Tito Karnavian. "I have ordered my officers to arrest those doing sweeps in an anarchic fashion, because it is a violation of the law," he told reporters. He also reprimanded two police units caught passing on the ruling to their officers, telling them fatwas "are not a reference for positive law". The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), the prominent hardline group behind the weekend's action, defended its conduct. ![]() "We Muslims were just spreading the fatwa, because as Muslims it is an obligation to support our clerics," Mohamad Mahdi al-Habsyi, the head of Surabaya's FPI chapter, told AFP. The FPI has urged followers on social media to report any cases of Muslims being forced to wear Christmas attire. Most of Indonesia's 255 million inhabitants practise a moderate form of Islam, often infused with influences from local ethnic groups. However critics say an unwillingness by authorities to take action has emboldened fringe radical groups and fuelled intolerance. - AFP/ec |

QUOTE U.S. State Dept. approves M1A2 tank recapitalization for Kuwait By Ryan Maass | Dec. 13, 2016 at 11:55 AM ![]() The U.S. State Dept. has approved a proposed $1.7 billion sale to Kuwait for the recapitalization of M1A2 tanks and related equipment. Kuwait will use the new equipment to modernize its fleet of M1A2 tanks. Photo by Sgt. Marcus Fichtl/U.S. Army WASHINGTON, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department has approved the possible recapitalization of 218 M1A2 tanks for the government of Kuwait. The pending sale includes 240 M2A1 machine guns, 480 7.62 M240 machine guns, 240 AN/VRC-92E SINCGARS radios, 1,085 night vision goggles, technical support, and training services. The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agencywhich manages the Foreign Military Sales program, says the sale is estimated to cost $1.7 billion. If approved by Congress, the government of Kuwait will use the equipment to modernize its fleet of M1A2 tanks. The U.S. government contends that the proposed sale will benefit foreign policy interests by promoting peace and economic stability in the Middle East, and will not alter the balance of power in the region. Principal contractors involved in the program include General Dynamics Land Systems, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and various other companies. The M1A2 Abrams tank is a follow-up to the M1A1, featuring an independent thermal viewer and improved fire control system. The vehicle is manufactured by General Dynamics. http://www.upi.com/Business_News/Security-.../6011481645514/ This post has been edited by azriel: Dec 20 2016, 02:28 PM |

QUOTE 20/12/16 INDONESIAN AW101 HELICOPTER MAKES MAIDEN FLIGHT Maiden flight of the unannunced Indonesian AW101 helicopter at Yeovil (UK) ![]() Indonesian AW101 At the beginning of this year there were rumors about a strong interest of Indonesia for the AW101 helicopter. Indonesia was interested in a combat search and rescue variant of the three-engined rotorcraft, with a similar configuration to the Italian air force's new HH-101 Caesar model. In November 2015 the Indonesian air force indicated a willingness to buy three AW101s for VVIP transport missions. However, the following month president Joko Widodo axed the deal on cost grounds. According to the maiden flight of the Indonesian AW101, without any statement about, it’s likely to think that the program is proceeding according to the initial intention. U.S. Navy test fires Raytheon SM-6 missile at sea ![]() PACIFIC MISSILE FIRING RANGE, Hawaii, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy fired two Raytheon-built Standard Missile-6 missiles to intercept incoming medium-range ballistic missile targets during a recent flight test. The Standard Missile-6, or SM-6, is designed to intercept short-range and medium-range attacks at sea, and replaced the SM-2 Block IV missile. Raytheon officials say the test was conducted to demonstrate the weapon's versatility. "This test showcased the flexibility of SM-6 by providing both anti-air warfare and ballistic missile defense from sea," Raytheon Missile Systems president Dr. Taylor W. Lawrence said in a press release. "Combined with its anti-surface warfare capabilities, the SM-6 will play a significant role in protecting U.S. and Allied forces at sea and ashore." The test was part of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency's Sea-Based Terminal Program, which aims to bolster ballistic missile protection using maritime platforms. The SM-6 missiles used in the test were integrated into the Aegis missile guidance system. In addition to incoming ballistic missile threats, the SM-6 is also designed to engage rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as surface targets. The Dual I variant used in the test achieved initial operating capability in 2016 following a successful flight test in August 2015. UPI |

![]() QUOTE TUESDAY, 20 DECEMBER, 2016 | 20:32 WIB Gov't Mulls Plan to Buys Submarines from Sweden TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Defense Ministry and the Swedish Defense Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the primary weapons defense system sector. Both countries have considered tightening relationship through submarine procurement. "[Sweden] offers submarines in addition to fighter jets," Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said after the MoU signing at his office in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 20, 2016. Earlier, the Defense Industry Policy Committee (KKIP) said that there are seven priority programs included in the national defense industry roadmap. The seven programs are productions of propellant, missiles, medium tanks, radars, fighter jets, and submarines. Sweden-made submarines have been claimed to be the best in the world. One of the submarines, HMS Gotland, tested in the United States in 2005, was able to defeat US submarines and even penetrated dangerous zones. Ryamizard admitted that no decisions yet have been made in relation to the submarine procurement. Ryamizard revealed that he was invited by the Swedish Defense Ministry to observe their submarine technology. "If we decide to by, there will be counter-trade and offset," Ryamizard said. Singapore steps up security for festive period
![]() Expect tighter security and more bag checks in Singapore this festive season, with Monday's attack in Berlin serving as the latest reminder of the global terror threat. Security companies are reporting a rising demand for their services from shopping malls, event organisers and local attractions. On Monday, the police said there will be greater police presence and increased checks on bags during the festive period. Police and security officers will also be deployed for year-end festivities such as the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown, which will see two major roads in the Civic District - St Andrew's Road and Connaught Drive - closed to vehicles. Entertainment spaces such as the Esplanade, which houses a mall, are also taking more security measures. ![]() "These include increasing security patrols and maintaining a greater visibility for our security personnel so that members of the public can approach them where necessary," said Mr Ravi Sivalingam, its head of hospitality and services. Resorts World Sentosa - which has attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore and shopping outlets - will also be stepping up security protocols to tackle the threat of terrorism. Its spokesman said: "We have stepped up our security measures at all our attractions by deploying more security personnel across the integrated resort to monitor for any unusual activities." Front-line staff are also being trained to identify suspicious people and items, and respond appropriately during a terrorist attack. Security firms are also beefing up their numbers to cope with countdown parties and celebrations. With extended hours for shopping malls and public transport operations, a Certis Cisco spokesman said that the firm usually hires part- time officers to complement its existing pool of 7,000 staff. Another firm, Soverus, said that it typically hires at least 600 ad hoc guards for countdown events, in addition to its force of 750. ![]() Singapore has kept its guard up following reports that the terror threat is greater this festive season. Pico Guards, which deploys 480 security officers across 60 locations, said that since the middle of last month, almost all its clients had asked for more security patrols. Last year, only half of them made requests for greater security. "Increasing patrols and security presence in the malls means deterring potential terrorist attacks," said Pico's deputy managing director Pierce Ang. "So our guards have to work extra hard to do more rounds with increased vigilance." He added that guards also attend refresher training courses to learn about counter-terrorism measures, and work with cleaning and retail staff to spot suspicious activity. Mr Ang said: "Given the heightened security risks worldwide and the recent terror events, such attacks can happen any time. The threat must be taken seriously." http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/spor...?xtor=EREC-16-1[ST_Newsletter_AM]-20161221-[Singapore+steps+up+security+for+festive+period]&xts=538291 |

QUOTE(TechSuper @ Dec 20 2016, 04:39 PM) Haha where got....heavy mortars max range only around 7-8 km yo. The mortar bombs themelves are already pretty heavy. Even small pack 105mm howitzer usual range is around 10-15km already.Unlike normal arty rounds where the propellant charge is pretty large, mortar rounds don't have that kind of provision. You can add only so much propelling charge 'donuts' onto a mortar bomb. Each 'donut' on average gives a 1km boost in addition to the main propellant inside the bomb itself, depending on elevation. At most you can add 5-6 'donuts' to a mortar round. ![]() Also, pls don't think mortars are 1:1 replacement with artillery. Their roles are very different. Mortars are infantry support weapons used in tactical situations. Artillery is a more strategic weapon where you want some shit in a particular grid box destroyed. |
