Beijing says Japan targeted its planes with 'decoy flares'

user posted image

BEIJING • China has slammed Tokyo for targeting its military aircraft with "decoy flares" over a waterway near Japan, calling the actions "dangerous and unprofessional".

Two Japanese F-15s fired the projectiles as the Chinese planes passed through the Miyako Strait between Japan's Miyako and Okinawa Islands, the Defence Ministry said in a statement late on Saturday.

The incident took place on Saturday morning as the Chinese planes carried out "routine far seas training", the statement said.

The Chinese side added that its aircraft were in international airspace when the encounter occurred.

The Chinese jets were at that time taking part in long-range exercises over waterways near Taiwan.

"The actions of the Japanese fighters were dangerous and unprofessional and smashed the freedoms of navigation and overflight provided by international law," it said.

When contacted by AFP, neither the Japanese Defence Ministry nor the Prime Minister's Office could confirm the incident.

Taiwan's Defence Ministry said in a statement that China's drills lasted for about four hours and involved more than 10 aircraft, including four electronic surveillance planes.

Beijing, which has in recent years become more assertive in the western Pacific and South China Sea, has carried out similar exercises in the area since September.

Saturday's flights by Chinese jets were the first such flights since a telephone call between Taiwan's leader Tsai Ing-wen and US President-elect Donald Trump irked China.

China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own and has never renounced the use of force to take back what it deems a wayward province. Mr Trump's call with Ms Tsai on Dec 2 was the first between a US president-elect or president and a Taiwan leader since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition to China from Taiwan in 1979.

China lodged a diplomatic protest over the call and blamed Taiwan for what it called a "petty" move.

Separately, the official Xinhua news agency reported that China Coast Guard vessels conducted a routine patrol in the waters of the disputed Diaoyu Islands yesterday.

Japan and China are at loggerheads over a longstanding territorial row in the East China Sea. That dispute relates to uninhabited islets controlled by Japan known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese.

U.S. Army to begin Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle testing

user posted image

WASHINGTON, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army is set to begin testing its first Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle as it continues its M113 replacement program.

The branch expects its first delivery from BAE Systems on Dec. 15. The new vehicle will roll out from the company's plant in York, Penn. BAE Systems has been contracted to provide at least 29 of the next-generation infantry vehicles. Once delivered, the units will undergo 52 months of engineering and manufacturing.

The Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle, or AMPV is part of the U.S. Army's effort to replace its Vietnam War-era M113 family of armored vehicles. Designed to operate alongside M1 Abrams tanks and M2 Bradley fighting vehicles, the AMPV will feature improved protection, mobility and interoperability.

"At the end of the day, a combat vehicle is about a box," program director Maj. Gen. David G. Bassett said in a press release. "[Inside, are the latest] mobility system, lethality system, communications system and some other things. If you can take all those and put them on an existing vehicle, then maybe you don't have to build a whole new vehicle from scratch, along with the ris associated with that kind of development."

The Army also plans to issue an "analysis of alternatives." The report is expected in early 2017.

"We're not willing to go through a lengthy bottom-up design process. We're willing to give you time on your own to get a design ready to compete and then we'll evaluate that fairly rapidly in the engineering, manufacturing, development phase, not unlike what the Marine Corps did," Bassett added.

The world’s largest armies from antiquity to the present

user posted image

Mapmaking graphic artist Martin Vargic’s has made an amazing graphic tracking the size of the world’s largest armies at different points in time.

The graphic gives an understanding of the just how mobilized the human race was during World War II — and shows how the size of the wold’s largest armies has shrunk over time as interstate warfare becomes less common and technology surpasses sheer manpower in military importance.

It also gives us a chance to compare the size of some of the largest armies at different points in history with one another: the US had about as many troops in 1950, for instance, as China’s Ming Dynasty had in 1400.

One loaded choice Vargic made is splitting the world between East and West. The graphic doesn’t depict the world’s single biggest army at any given time, but the biggest armies in two halves of a divided and sometimes antagonistic world.

In his research, Vargic drew from Encyclopedia Britannica, British think tank IISS, and Wikipedia. The first project listed on his website is a humorous map showing the Internet’s biggest traffic drivers as countries drawn to scale.

Another project of his shows what would be left of the world should sea levels rise by 250 to 300 feet, which the Slovakian artist said is realistic should the polar ice caps melt completely.

Turkey scrambles to cut its losses in Syria

user posted image

QUOTE
“The latest developments in Aleppo suggest that some kind of understanding has been reached, with Turkey reportedly mediating on behalf of the rebels and their families for their withdrawal to Idlib. Ankara is in a hurry because of its paranoia over the Syrian Kurdish statelet it sees emerging along its border. It is desperate to stop the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) from physically linking all the cantons under its control. This, in turn, means preventing the YPG from taking the town of al-Bab from the Islamic State and also striking a deal with Russia, and by extension with the Assad regime, presumably at the Syrian Kurds’ expense.”
QUOTE
“Developments in al-Bab are linked to clashes in Aleppo. Turkey is reportedly transferring opposition fighters withdrawn from Damascus, Homs and Aleppo to the al-Bab region to form a paramilitary force under its control. Turkey sees control of al-Bab as a key for its ruling Justice and Development Party to have a say in the future of Syria and to prove the futility of Kurdish aspirations to form and control a corridor along the Turkish border. Both the United States, which supports Turkey, and Russia, which gave Turkey the green light to advance on al-Bab, are suspicious of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his intentions. Russia, which supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, allowed the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) to advance toward al-Bab in between the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) and Assad's troops. This enabled YPG-SDF fighters to create a de facto buffer zone between the Turkish forces and the Syrian army.”
QUOTE
“another problem is Turkey’s inability to impose its rule and achieve stability, thus leaving the people at the mercy of the Islamic militant groups Jabhat Fatah al-Sham and Ahrar al-Sham. As long as the Syrian army needs al-Bab to recapture Aleppo, Turkey won’t be able to take the risk of capturing al-Bab. Syria’s defense industry’s main components and the biggest international airport are just south of al-Bab.”
QUOTE
“There is also talk of Syrian army cooperation with the Kurds regarding al-Bab, Turkey’s primary target in its Operation Euphrates Shield,” Tastekin writes. “Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) want to turn the zone between Manbij and Afrin into a safe zone for the Kurds. The Turkish army is trying to thwart that goal. Some observers interpreted the Syrian army’s shelling of Turkish-supported groups advancing to al-Bab as signaling the regime’s support for the Kurds.”

China ready to launch supersize 10,000-ton destroyer, report says

HONG KONG, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- China may not be far from launching a 10,000-ton Type 055 destroyer and building a semi-submersible ship.

According to Hong Kong news service UDN.com, satellite photos indicate Beijing is nearing completion on a supersize destroyer at Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai.

The warship could be launched before the end of 2016, according to the report published Friday.

Hong Kong-based military commentator Liang Guoliang said the photos show officers from the Zhongchuan Group, and the images indicate construction was reaching its final phase in preparation for a first-time launch.

There appear to be two Type 055 destroyers at the shipyard. At least one ship was equipped with engines, control devices and radar, Liang said.

The destroyer can displace about 12,000 tons and is the largest warship of its class to be manufactured in Asia, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

The UDN report stated the destroyer has 96 vertical launching system grids and a helipad capable of accommodating large military helicopters.

The Type 055 can carry YJ-100 long-range anti-ship cruise missiles, anti-submarine missiles and anti-aircraft missiles.

Other Chinese warships in active service include the Type 051 and 052 destroyers.

China is also making swift progress on the construction of ultra-large semi-submersible ships.

Guangzhou Shipyard International had built a semi-submersible ship at Guangzhou Shipyard on Thursday.

The ship named "Xinguanghua" was delivered to Zhongyuan Shipping the owner, according to the report.

China flies nuclear bomber over South China Sea to 'send message' to Donald Trump

user posted image

QUOTE
China has flown a nuclear-capable bomber outside its borders in a show of force for the first time since US President-elect Donald Trump’s phone call with the president of Taiwan.

The 10-minute telephone call with President Tsai Ing-wen was the first by a US president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979, acknowledging Taiwan as part of ‘One China’. It led to protests from Beijing.

The Xian H-6 bomber flew along the disputed 'nine-dash line' around the South China Sea on Thursday, US officials told Fox News, passing over a number of disputed islands. The officials said it was designed to send a message to the incoming administration.

The Pentagon found out about the flight on Friday and officials said it was the first long-range flight along the demarcation line in more than 18 months – though this sortie extended further than previous ones.

The H-6 is the Chinese version of the Russian Tupolev Tu-16 jet bomber and has been used by China to drop nuclear devices in tests.

Mr Trump has used Twitter to criticise Beijing's policies, including the build-up of “a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea”.

ISIS Retakes UNESCO Heritage Site Palmyra—So Where Is Putin’s Army Now?

user posted image

QUOTE
So far, over the course of a 72-hour blitzkrieg, ISIS has retaken the strategic mountain perches of Jabal al Tar and Jabal Antara, overlooking Palmyra, as well as the northeastern and western neighborhoods, all of the oil and gas fields northwest of the city, a military warehouse and another military installation. The terror army entered the city center on Saturday, where it continues to clash with those remaining regime forces. It may have also downed a Syrian MiG-23 fighter jet
QUOTE
an archaeologist from Palmyra who now lives in Turkey but keeps in contact with both opposition and regime sources, estimates that about 50 percent of the city has fallen to ISIS. The Assadists still control Tadmor airport, a military intelligence headquarters and Tadmor Palace
QUOTE
He said that a mere 50 to 60 jihadists were currently besieging Palmyra, which now contains as many civilians but around 1,000 Syrian army personnel and between 1,500 and 2,000 pro-Assad militiamen.
QUOTE
pro-Assad militia built and trained by Iran. "The NDF had over 800 men posted around the straetgic Shaar gas field and the other areas, in addition to around 250 regular soldiers, the source said. "They had maintained defensive positions for the last 6 months. In August, operations had been stopped. When ISIS attacked days ago they retreated and left most of the heavy weapons without a fight. In the panic, over 100 were killed or are still missing. Word is that a senior NDF commander who was stationed around Shaar was bribed by ISIS. It is not the first time this has happened. A decision was made to prevent the city falling at all costs."
QUOTE
Analysts such as Middle East Institute fellow Charles Lister and researchers at the Washington, D.C.-based Syrian Institute estimate that Assad’s only got about 20,000 reliable regular army soldiers nationwide. Over two-thirds of his hodgepodge coalition consists of sectarian militias of various nationalities led by warlords and trained up by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, if not “advised” by Russian commandos. Lebanese, Iraqi, Pakistan and Afghan Shiite jihadists are known to do the heavy lifting on behalf of Damascus.
QUOTE
ISIS appears set on marching on the T4 airbase, Syria’s largest, where the regime keeps two fixed-wing attack squadrons, of Su-24 and of Su-22 fighter jets, as well as a fleet of helicopter gunships.

I'm sure these long SureFire mags can still be useful combat situation. Personnel with these mags can lay down suppressing fire and not as part of the maneuvering team.

Kopaska operators have excellent training, I'm sure they are aware of the drawbacks and benefits of these long mags

thats what i thought also

might be useful for suppressing fire support

Indonesian police arrest three more terror suspects, including second woman planning suicide bombing

user posted image

Jakarta - Indonesian police have arrested three more suspects - including a second woman being prepared as a suicide-bomber - who are linked to the foiled terror attack on the Presidential Palace over last weekend in Jakarta.

"As of today, seven people have been named suspects, including (another) alleged bomb-maker, who was arrested in Ngawi, East Java," said National police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar, who was speaking to The Jakarta Post in Bandung, the capital of West Java province, on Monday (Dec. 12).

user posted image

The latest arrests come hot on the heels of consecutive raids by the Detachment 88 (Densus 88) counter-terrorism unit, across West and Central Java on Saturday, as the police thwarted a suicide bombing by a 27-year-old woman who allegedly planned to strike in the capital last Sunday morning.

A total of four people, including a man who made the 3kg "rice cooker" bomb and the woman who was to carry out the attack during Sunday's changing of guard ceremony at Istana Merdeka, were nabbed by Densus 88 on Saturday.

Inspector General Boy said those arrested in the follow-up operations were a second woman from Solo, Central Java, being prepared for a suicide-bombing mission and a second male bomb-maker.

He also confirmed that the seven suspects are part of a new cell based in Solo and put together by Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian militant who is in the Middle East fighting alongside the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

"This terror cell had direct contact with Bahrun, they operated in several cities (and) they had planned a terror attack, in which Bekasi was just a transit area before they moved to their main target area (in) Jakarta," he added.

Bekasi is a city in West Java, where the first woman suspect with the rice-cooker bomb was arrested. She was not identified by the police but sources had named her as Dian Yuli Novi, from Cirebon, West Java.

The arrest of the second woman supports an earlier theory of the police that Bahrun has been setting up smaller militant cells in Indonesia, tasked with suicide bombings, as well as recruiting jihadists, including women, to mount attacks.

Dian was arrested on Saturday in a rented room at the lodging house located in Bintara Jaya, Bekasi, while the two men who delivered the bomb to her for the attack on the palace, were nabbed 10 miniutes earlier in Kalimalang, in East Jakarta. The maker of the rice-cooker bomb was detained in Karanganyar, Central Java, later in the day.

Investigations into the case are still ongoing, said Inspector General Boy, while Densus 88 officers were still collecting evidence from the home of one of the suspects in Sukoharjo, Central Java.

Sukoharjo police chief Ruminio Ardano told Antara state news media that 42 bottles of chemicals, a laptop, some books, and a rice cooker, were seized from a lodging house in the city.

user posted image

The suspect who stayed in Sukoharjo was arrested in another house in Ngawi, where the police found more than 1kg of triaceton triperoxide (TATP). The same substance was also used to make the rice-cooker bomb seized in Bekasi.

TATP is found in fertilisers but could be easily turned into high explosives when mixed with other chemicals. Traces of the chemical were found in bombs used during the July 2005 London bombings, as well as the attacks in Paris last year.

The police said on Monday that its bomb disposal unit will destroy the explosive substances on site in Ngawi as the chemicals are too unstable to be transported.

New Wireless Sights Show U.S. Soldiers Exactly Where Their Machine Gun Fire Will Hit

New tech will let soldiers shoot machine guns via helmet mounted displays.

user posted image

user posted image

The U.S. Army will begin production on a new generation of weapon sights designed to allow soldiers to engage the enemy while staying under cover. The Family of Weapon Sights—Crew Served (FWS-CS) program links troops to heavy weapons with wireless technology.

FWS-CS is a long-wave infrared night vision scope that is installed on a M2 .50 caliber machine gun, Mk. 19 grenade machine gun, or M240 machine gun. The scope is boresighted to the weapon, meaning aligned with the weapon's barrel. The Army has been installing night vision scopes on guns for a long time, so that part isn't a big deal.

The big deal is that the scope has a 12-micro thermal and high-definition day camera wirelessly linked to a helmet-mounted display worn by the gunner. The display projects onto the wearer's field of vision showing where the bullets—or grenades—will impact.

The result is that soldiers can acquire and engage targets much more quickly. Instead of looking down the sights of the gun and adjusting, they can get a good grip on the weapon, use the reticle to zero in on the enemy, and open fire. The sight also has a zoom capability, which will aid in identifying a target at long ranges.

Projectiles such as bullets and grenades gradually lose velocity at longer ranges, as gravity inevitably takes over. At 1,200 yards, for example, a .50 caliber bullet drops 86 inches due to gravity. At shorter ranges—say, 500 yards—the difference in elevation between the barrel of the gun and the sight means the bullets will strike about too 86 inches too high. You can see where the problem lies. Both distances are greater than the height of the average person, so it's entirely possible to miss your target if you're not careful.

FWS-CS, on the other hand, uses a laser rangefinder to instantly calculate the distance to the target and whether or not to adjust the shooter's aim up or down. Thanks to the infrared sight, it is equally accurate in day or night conditions.

Yet another advantage: the wireless aspect means the soldier doesn't have to position himself directly behind the gun to fire. After all, if the gun can shoot at the enemy, the enemy can shoot at the gun—and the shooter behind it. It is entirely possible that, so long as he or she has a good grip on the weapon, the shooter can actually duck down behind cover or inside an armored vehicle and pull the trigger, relying on the helmet mounted display to aim.

FWS-CS was scheduled to be in the Engineering and Manufacturing Phase between January and March of this year, and should enter the Production and Deployment Phase—where it actually reaches the troops—very soon.

RMAF awaits delivery of last, most advanced, Airbus A400M

By BALQIS JAZIMAH ZAHARI - 11 December 2016 @ 4:42 PM

IPOH: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will receive its fourth and last Airbus A400M aircraft before the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2017 (LIMA '17) to be held in March, said RMAF Chief General Tan Sri Roslan Saad.

He said receipt of the aircraft, initially planned for last month, was rescheduled, as the airplane is being further updated and fitted with the latest software.

"Upon arrival, it will be (equipped) with the latest technology and will be (more advanced than) the three A400Ms we had received.

"The other A400Ms (which arrived between last year and June this year) will also be updated in future," he told a press conference after attending a graduation ceremony for Air Force cadets at the Air Force Training Institute here today.

Military Situation In Syria After Liberation Of Aleppo (Maps)

QUOTE
Militants that ingored a proposal to withdraw from the southeastern part of Aleppo city last night, retreated to an area north of Ramouseh.

It’s metter of hours when they will be purged by government forces.
QUOTE
Before launching new full-scale operations, the Syrian military and its allies will need to regroup, resupply and rotate their forces and to improve security of the Aleppo countryside.

Then, government forces will have next goals and priorities:

* to take back Palmyra;

* to seize miltiant-held pockets near Homs and Damascus;

* to advance on Idlib;

The advance in the direction of al-Bab also looks not likely because this could lead to full-scale military confrontation with the Turkish Armed Forces. However, the Syrian government can decide to provide some assistance to Kurdish YPG forces clashing with pro-Turkey militant groups in the area.

Germany receives first tactical A400M transport from Airbus

user posted image

QUOTE
The German Air Force has received its first upgraded A400M Atlas military transport aircraft from Airbus Defense and Space.

According to Airbus, the tactical upgrades include improvements in airdrops, paratrooping, and self-defense. The planes can also fly as low as 150 feet above the ground, and operate as a tanker for other aircraft.

"There is no other aircraft in the market with the A400M´s combination of tactical and strategic capabilities and it is going to transform Germany's air mobility force," Rossner added.

The company markets the A400M as the world's most versatile airlifter, capable of carrying payloads weighing up to 37 tons. Alternately, the plane can carry up to 116 troops.
