General Dynamics to christen U.S. Navy's Colorado submarine

user posted image

GROTON, Conn., Dec. 1 (UPI) -- General Dynamics will christen the USS Colorado, the U.S. Navy's newest Virginia-class submarine, during a ceremony on Saturday.

Company officials say the new vessel will be the branch's most advanced submarine to date, featuring some technology from Ohio-class platforms. Colorado will serve as the fifteenth ship of the Virginia-class.

Virginia-class attack submarines are marketed as the most technologically advanced variants employed by the U.S. Navy. The vessels are designed to track down and destroy enemy undersea platforms while also projecting power ashore. They are typically armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, and can also support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

The christening comes 4 years after the ship was formally named in April 2012. The upcoming ceremony will feature U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who will is listed as the principal speaker for the event.

Russia has taunted Europe with nuclear-capable missiles before — but this time is different

user posted image

QUOTE
Through a “crowdsourcing experiment” on Geo4nonpro.com, Lewis and his colleagues have been examining satellite imagery of Kaliningrad. According to Lewis, the results are disturbing.

Instead of a routine deployment with routine drills, Lewis sees the Russians “knocking buildings down like crazy and building new buildings,” in what he considers an attempt to permanently house the nuclear-capable missiles in Europe.

“I think construction at the missile base is consistent with permanent deployment. We found the missile base using Russian social media and found the training area. Every time there are reports that there’s an exercise we go take a look at the missile base,” said Lewis of his methodology.

The military bases in Kaliningrad seem to be undergoing a change to accommodate the missiles and vehicles that accompany them.

These Funky North Korean Guns Are Turning Up Everywhere

Type 73s appear on battlefields from Iraq to Yemen

user posted image

QUOTE
The Type 73 is an intriguing design, virtually unheard of outside North Korea. Little information about the gun’s origins has escape the reclusive communist country.

“Even within the mist of secrecy regarding North Korean firearms, the Type 73 is still clouded in mystery,” Dan Shea and Heebum Hong wrote in Small Arms Defense Journal in 2013. “Refugees who escape North Korea via China sometimes have information, but that information might have some problems.”

From what details and images are available, the approximately 23-pound gun appears to be a hodgepodge of ideas taken from various Soviet and Warsaw Pact designs. The Type 73 blends the basic layout of the Russian PKM with the feeding system from the Czechoslovakian Vz.52.

The arrangement allows gunners to load the weapons with belts of ammunition or large magazines. When fitted, the magazines stick out of the top, giving the firearms a distinctly dated appearance.

Unusual for a machine gun, the Type 73 has a special barrel attachment so soldiers can fire rifle grenades. With this feature, it is not entirely clear what role the North Koreans envisioned for the gun.

Indonesia police aircraft loses contact with Singapore air traffic control

user posted image

SINGAPORE: Search and rescue operations have been activated by the Singapore Rescue Coordination Centre to locate an Indonesian police light aircraft, said the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) on Saturday (Dec 3).

P4201, with 12 people on board, had lost contact with Singapore air traffic control at 11.22am, said CAAS.

user posted image

The aircraft departed Pankal Pinang at 10.24am Singapore time and was expected to arrive in Batam at 11.58am. Its last known radar position was about 40 nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Pinang.

The M28 Skytruck plane lost contact with air traffic control during what was supposed to be a 1.5 hour flight in western Indonesia.

Indonesia news outlet Detik reported that the light aircraft “crashed in the waters" off Kabupaten Lingga, Riau Islands. "The data given is true," said Riau Islands Police chief Brigadier General Sambudi Gusdian.

"Fishermen found clothes, suitcases and air plane seats we fear belong to the plane," national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told AFP.

On Saturday night, Singapore Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said the Republic of Singapore Air Force activated its Super Puma helicopter, Fokker-50 and Chinook, with a C-130 on standby to assist with the search. Wreckage was sighted at about 3pm, Dr Ng said.

"The SAF will continue to work closely with Indonesian authorities to find survivors. Our prayers are with the families of the missing crew," he wrote.

“Two ships are awaiting clearance by the Indonesian authorities to assist in the search and rescue efforts,” sad CAAS.

The CAAS Crisis Management Centre has also been activated.

Indonesia has a poor aviation safety record and has experienced several air disasters recently. Last week, an Indonesian army helicopter crashed on Borneo island leaving three crew dead, while in November a cargo plane crashed in Papua region killing four.

Patrol Begins! New Russian MRAPs Tested in Winter Conditions (VIDEO)

Two new 'Patrol' armored vehicles, designed for the Russian Interior and Defense ministries took part in a series of field tests in the Moscow Region on Thursday, December 1.

'Patrol' is a 12-tonne Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle designed for transporting personnel and equipment across rough terrain and hostile areas. Developed by Asteis, the vehicle is based on the chassis of Kamaz – a brand of Russian trucks known throughout the world for their unparalleled off-road capability, reliability and rugged efficiency.

Air defense missile weapon system (ADS) Antei-2500 (left) and Air defense system (ADS) Buk-M2E presented at the open exhibition at 2016 ARMY Military Forum in exhibition and convention centre of Patriot military-patriotic recreation park of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation

Sergei Ivanov, Asteis’ Test Department Chief, told Ruptly that while many of the vehicle’s technical characteristics remain classified, he can confirm that Patrol will withstand a blast of explosive device with a yield of up to 6 kilograms of TNT. Furthermore, the vehicle can operate in under extreme temperatures ranging from minus 50 to plus 50 degrees Celsius, as well as in high altitude areas of up to 4,000 meters above the sea level.

The vehicle can be employed in a wide variety of combat situations, including urban warfare. It can transport up to 10 passengers (including driver) or up to 1,500 kilograms of cargo, and can also be fitted with a weapon module to provide limited infantry support.

Russia, the middleman keeping Turkey and Syria from clashing

user posted image

QUOTE
The Turkish military reported on 24 November that an air attack, allegedly by Syrian government forces, killed three of its soldiers and wounded 10 near the northern Syrian city of al-Bab. A few hours later, seven more Turkish soldiers were wounded in a second attack.
QUOTE
The Turkish-backed offensive, a coalition of Syrian rebel groups supported by Turkish troops, was launched on 24 August to take the border town of Jarabulus to target the Islamic State group, and also to hamper the aims of both the Syrian Kurdish forces, which are considered a threat to Turkey because of their affiliation with the outlawed PKK.
QUOTE
Turkey’s offensive was preceded by a rapprochement with Russia after an eight-month rift triggered by Turkey’s downing of a Russian fighter jet in late 2015. The rekindling of ties led to speculation about a secret deal on Syria between Turkey and Russia.
QUOTE
The attack, as was reported, may have been a warning shot to keep Turkey away from al-Bab.
QUOTE
There is also a common assumption among some experts that Russia, despite its approval of the Turkish-led operation, will not permit Turkish-backed groups to capture al-Bab because Russia fears Turkey and its Syrian rebel allies will then be able to threaten the Syrian government's Aleppo operation.
QUOTE
“Assad and Iran, although for different reasons, are not happy with the restored ties between Russia and Turkey,”
QUOTE
Assad fears that such a cooperation may in the long term lead to a political settlement that forces him to share power with opposition groups.
QUOTE
"Iran, also, fears that the two countries [Russia and Turkey] share a common interest in limiting its influence in Syria, and therefore might have colluded with Assad to sabotage these restored relations.”
QUOTE
If Turkey were to succeed in brokering such a deal, it would likely improve its relations with Russia and secure a more active political role in the conflict, which would further empower Russia and sideline the US.
QUOTE
It also indicates that Turkey’s attempt to capture al-Bab is likely to be permitted and guaranteed by Russia.

Taking part were troops due to be deployed early next year to shore up Nato forces in the Baltic states.

Every detail was as close as possible to those British soldiers will experience if Putin goes into Estonia.

'What kind of odds are you comfortable with?’: The North Korean nuclear threat is looming larger

user posted image

QUOTE
WASHINGTON, DC — The only nation to have used nuclear weapons this century will be able to strike Seattle in four years, former CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden said on Wednesday.

“I really do think that it is very likely by the end of Mr. Trump’s first term the North Korean’s will be able to reach Seattle with a nuclear weapon onboard an indigenously produced intercontinental ballistic missile,” Hayden said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

“Now, will it be a high-probability shot, they have technical issues, so probably not. But then again, what kind of odds are you comfortable with when it comes to Pyongyang?” Hayden said.
QUOTE
“After the December 2012 launch, the South Korean navy dredged up off the ocean floor the stages of the North Korean missile, Klingner explained. “South Korean and US officials assessed the missile had a 10,000 km range which covers a large part of the US.”

Fast forward to this year, on February 7, a month after North Korea’s purported hydrogen-bomb test, the rogue regime fired a long-range rocket it claimed was carrying a satellite for its space program.

The launch, which was largely viewed as a front for testing an intercontinental ballistic missile, was not only successful but also showcased the North’s technological advancements.

“After the February 2016 launch, experts assessed it could have a range of 13,000 km, covering the entire US,” Klingner said, which makes the Seattle range estimate “outdated,” he added.

According to Klingner, even the rocket with a range of 10,000 km would compromise approximately 120 million people.

Congress authorizes Trump to arm Syrian rebels with anti-aircraft missiles

QUOTE
The House voted for the first time today to explicitly authorize the incoming Donald Trump administration to arm vetted Syrian rebels with anti-aircraft missiles.
QUOTE
Mattis is well known in military and foreign policy circles for his aggressive determination to take on America’s foes, notably Iran, including in Syria and Iraq. Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee as far back as January 2015, however, he opined that the time for supporting moderate rebel fighters against Assad's forces had "passed."
QUOTE
“If Trump decides not to end American military support for the rebels, providing MANPADs could help the opposition maintain its positions in Idlib, which I suspect is where Russian air power will be concentrated on after Aleppo falls to the regime."

Lithuania buys German M577 armored vehicles

user posted image

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- The government of Lithuania is set to receive M577 armored personnel carriers from the German Armed Forces.

The M577 is a member of the M113 armored vehicle family typically used as a tactical operations center by warfighters on the battlefield. The vehicle can be crewed by up to 5 personnel, and is not normally equipped with any defensive weapons.

German defense officials signed a contract to deliver a total of 168 vehicles to the Lithuanian Armed Forces on Nov. 30 in Vilnius. The order is valued at approximately $1.71 million.

"The Lithuanian Armed Forces is buying command, indirect fire support, medical evacuation and training M577 armored personnel carriers in good technical condition that will fill in the shortages of armored vehicles in the Lithuanian Land Force," Lithuanian Logistics Support Command Lt. Col. Ramūnas Baronas said in a press release.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces already operate M113 vehicles similar to the M577. Deliveries are expected to occur in several phases between 2017 and 2018.

Here's A Short List Of Arms America Sold To Taiwan Last Year

President-elect Donald Trump’s decision to speak with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, making him the first U.S. leader to do so in four decades, is much bigger than a phone chat. We’re literally arming China’s enemy.
