QUOTE(five5five @ May 11 2017, 08:16 PM) For mango sticky rice you could stick to Mae Varee, though you can compare to others too, it's located near to Thonglor station. It's more expensive than others, mine 3 colours sticky rice(pandan, original and black glutinous rice) cost about 200baht. The normal one cost about 130baht i think. Also this place has no seating, you can only take away lol. |

Just back from Bangkok from 7th to 10th May 2017 and I must say I am already looking forward to my next visit there already.
Booked flight via AirAsia at RM 580.00 for both ways but had to reschedule my flight to accommodate arrival date of Thai GF at Bangkok and the price went up to RM 1120.00 7th May - Arrived pretty late at DMK due to flight delay (thanks AirAsia) so didn't do much. Took the shuttle bus to closest BTS station and got off at Asok station which was a close distance to the hotel booked. Had dinner nearby and called it a night. 8th May - Got up rather late and went for lunch at Terminal 21 food court. Many thanks to all who recommended this place as it was absolutely spot on. I didn't find any other place where the food was so cheap with sizable portions and delicious to boot! The place seems very popular however, it was really packed during lunch time so maybe an early visit would be recommended. Went to Pratunam district for shopping (can't remember the name of the shopping malls) after lunch and I think with all the selection available, you can't go wrong heading here to grab souvenirs or for general shopping. Since it was really tiring walking for so long, we had a leg massage (250THB/hour; which seems to be the standard pricing in general) before heading to Chinatown via taxi. It seems that most businesses are closed here on Mondays so there was none of the street food everyone was raving about during my visit. As there was nothing to do here, we headed to Asiatique which is a rather nice place to take some photos of the riverside with its cruises and a really big ferris wheel. A ride here will set you back around 300THB which I thought wasn't worth the price given how fast the ride ended. This is also a rather good place to spend the evening with its many stalls for souvenir shopping and eateries. Went back to the hotel via taxi for a little rest and headed out again for some adult entertainment at Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza but I have to say I was rather disappointed with both places and left after just walking around the area. They somehow lacked the flair and vibe which I found so appealing when I visited Walking Street in Pattaya. They are still good places to buy a drink and ogle the scantily dressed ladies though 9th May - Had the Chao Phraya river cruise scheduled for today which was a close walk from the Saphan Taksin BTS station. Took the river cruise tourist boat day pass at 150THB if I remember correctly. We stopped at the Wat Pho and Wat Arun temples which I highly recommend visiting. Guests have to be properly attired though as I saw several ladies stopped at the entrance due to the clothing they wore. There were returnable scarves and sarongs provided though. Also stopped at the Grand Palace but we were unable to go in due to a bereavement ceremony going on for the late Thai king. There were literally thousands of Thais paying homage to the King and only they were allowed in. It sucked not being able to go in as the palace looks absolutely magnificent even when viewed from afar. Guess this will have to wait for my next visit. The last stop took us to Khao San road which is a popular place for backpackers and I found it a great place to laze about just to take in the atmosphere. If you are into books, there is a great store here which sells used books for really cheap prices. The storekeeper was really knowledgeable and super helpful with my inquiries and I left with quite a number of novels which I was unable to get here. Had another leg massage here followed by lunch. I was contemplating dropping by Chinatown again on the ride back (there is a pier along the boat ride that stops near Chinatown) but it was still rather early for a visit so I guess this will be on my itinerary for my next trip. Headed back to the hotel for some rest and drank the night away at Soi Cowboy before calling it a night. 10th May - Last day here so didn't want to do much walking. Headed to Erawan shrine for some spiritual guidance and went to Terminal 21 to catch a movie at the cinema. Did some last minute shopping and headed back to hotel to rest. Took a taxi to the airport only to be greeted by another flight delay(thank you again AirAsia). At least they provided all passengers with a meal voucher for McDonalds which made the wait a little bearable. My spending for the trip was RM 1,120.00 (flight) + 10,928THB (RM 1,392.00 based on exchange rate for all expenses in Bangkok). Total of RM 2,512.00 which was within the budget I allocated for this trip and I think it was well worth it. All in all, I think that Bangkok is an amazing place to get away from it all for a couple of days. It is however, a concrete jungle with most of the good bits accessible with a little adventure and exploration. Having a local guiding me about there was also really helpful as I think I would have been really lost had I been on my own. Can't wait until my next trip there! |
