Dude,

First I would suggest you to call dell to claim warranty.
Second if this fails get the support of the seller to do that for you.
Third, dell quality a bit sucks, if you can utilize the warranty as the second owner get the owner a letter stating that he has sold/or given to you the unit.

Please upgrade the warranty due to you already start facing problem.
I don't see any problem if you able to contact seller and sort things out with him.
If your approach is considerate, I believe the seller is considerate to help you to lessen your woes.

I dunno why why second owner was unable to utilize the warranty, that is just stupid of Dell. I never found that kinda problem with HP. You just come to the service center and send the unit. Simple.

Id sure you have a lot of sifus here trying to help you out, be patient.
Even buying a new one could be problematic if you that kinda bad luck.
Regarding the DVD Drive, please try those Imation DVD/CD and see if works.
Some of the brand of DVD drive are just stupid (especially notebooks drives) and I have encountered a few one that does not work well with few disc.

Wish you all the best, cheers.

Hi,
I facing the same optical drive problem as u. I own a Toshiba Satelite and the DVD drive just can't read 90% of pirated CD/DVD. Later I took it to Shah Alam Service Center and request a replacement of optical drive and they did it for me FOC.

I think u shd also bring u labtop to DELL service center and request a replacement of optical drive.

Good Luck!!!!

Hi there,

Just a little advise regarding Dell. I've been dealing with em for years especially for other users. Experiences with them have been simple. Call them up, give them the required service tag number, name of owner and tell them the issues you're facing.

Explain that you've done whatever diagnostics that they require you to do and tell them you want a replacement. Complete cover means they'll replace anything at anytime no matter what happened. That's why the owner paid an extra RM600 for it (or so I believe)

Most of the time, I tell the customer support to just bring a replacement because if I let them talk, they'll tell me to go through a ton of unnecessary steps, etc. If the drive is faulty, get a replacement drive. Regarding your OS, I doubt they'll even bother. You can just ask em to give you the drive, you can install it yourself. Keypad is a different matter, you can't change it yourself. Actually you can, but you'll void whatever warranty you have. They'll come to you and take 10 minutes to change it.

If the problem is bigger, then you might have to give em your whole notebook for a few days and that's when you'll have problems because your OS doesn't tally with the specs they sold to you. So get home reinstalled (can do this is with an external optical drive).

Hi...my english is teribble so I write in Bahasa Malaysia.

wow. i tried calling dell service centre already, they told me the first thing i need to do is transfer ownership to me, as the original owner of this laptop according to dell is under a company. i'd need to provide them with a proof of purchase issued by that company. but the receipt i was issued was under another company so they dont accept that.

this laptop is still under complete cover, although i dont think there are any service tag stickers under the laptop.

dell even told me that without verifying ownership they wont even come to service the laptop, even if i'm willing to pay for it.

TERRIBLE indeed. if this is not resolved by next week i'll definitely ask for a refund and buy another laptop instead. cos besides the keyboard, everything else is working fine. the dvd drive problem was fixed as once when i started the laptop, BIOS told me that it may be loose so all i did was push the drive deeper into the unit and hey presto! the drive was working again.. keyboard replacement will cost me rm280 at lowyat plaza.. so i might ask for seller to cover this cost if he's not willing to do full refund..

rm280 for a replacement keyboard? that is terrible. even HP keyboards for laptops out of warranty is only rm120(I had mine quoted). i think that shop is expensive....
u should try to get the original receipt from him and get an extended warranty from dell. dell warranties are great. my friend had coffee spilt on it and he had a NEW unit replaced for him, no questions and no hassles!

why are you guys think about stolen la what la. if you guys so picky then take extra cash and buy new and never, never ever do online trading.

dell is like that, if stolen customer will have make report to dell the item is stolen.
so when the notebook reaches dell. dell can hold it and ask the original owner top take it.

if im the buyer i just meet the owner and ask him to sign off the unit.
and call dell, pretending as the owner. get the fix to be done. simple.

you send the item to shop the warranty will be void. now thats is a loss.

Just get it settled as soon as possible, the seller should help the current buyer. Get whatever information done, and get the laptop ready for Dell to fix. Since they want all ownership information done, the seller should help do this.

Why must the current buyer bend over backwards to get this done? Shouldn't this have been done by the seller before he started to sell the laptop?

Transfer of ownership is not practical at all in your case. You probably will lose the extra warranty plan bought by the previous owner by doing it, need to re-purchase again.

Best thing is, call up Dell, upon request, provide them the Service tag and previous owner name. They will proceed with RMA and send a technician to your house. Simple as that.

They won't insist on invoice or receipt, a lot of people would had thrown these away with the box.
They won't have a check on your IC number, don't worry.

Another thing, if u want it to be your name for ownership at the first place, you should pay the extra 1k to 2k+ for a new one instead. Sad to say that, Dell is practicing the same rules as buysell car, this can avoid a lot of RMA warranty request and reduce the RMA cost.

I seldom see people will use the same laptop until the end of it's lifespan.

RMA? what's that? seller asked me to refer to Austin's post just now..
trying out your suggestion, will i be charged? seller promised during time of purchase that everything will be smooth and easy and it wouldnt cost me a single cent. now it has caused me so much trouble and frustration. Seriously this has destroyed any trust i have towards online trading..

RMA

BULL SHIT shakehead.gif shakehead.gif shakehead.gif

u wont loss anything by doing so . losing of extra warranty ? ur warranty still the same even u do ownership transfer .

If u dunno anything bout it , juz remain silent . simple as that . whistling.gif whistling.gif shocking.gif

it is possible man and it is practical

Bcoz it is previously owned by a company , and if u save the hassle not to do ownership transfer , u r same like buying stolen goods as the ownership not yet transfered to u . It is still under other ppl name.

ppl thrown away invoices or receipt ? it is bcoz he/she is the original owner and he/she can prove it in many ways

dell wont ask for IC ? yes , they wont . But if u r look like suspicious , they will ask for any verification.

Is it? I bought a Dell 19" LCD 1yr ago from a Malay, when I called up Dell to ask about transfer of ownership, they told me I would lose the complete cover program bought additionally for this LCD.

So Steven if you are so confident, I suggest you give the thread starter a call and assist him to do all the warranty claim. I have nothing more to say since there is already an expert here to help.
