Conclusion summary: Sony is almost back on top form. The Xperia XZ is a solid all-round handset that does a lot of things right — a handset to restore the faith of Sony fans. Its greatest sin is probably looking a little dull — this is no Galaxy Note 7, after all — but once you look path its monolithic exterior there's a lot to like.
Sony bucks the trend of 2K displays and instead goes with a fantastic looking 1080p panel, with power savings as a result. Performance is speedy across the board, and Sony's software is thoughtful and measured. And we're finally seeing a significant leap forward in camera performance in an Xperia phone, with big hardware additions that result in better photos almost every time.
The problem for Sony, like so many other Android manufacturers, is the fact that Samsung's absolutely crushing it this year. Sony's camera is great, but it's not the best. Same deal with its screen, its build quality and its battery life. And U.S. buyers once again get the short end of the stick, as Sony cheaps out on fingerprint security.
As such, the XZ's appeal is likely limited to hardcore Sony fans. And if that's you, then you'll be getting a hell of a phone.
Then why bottom also huge? I think the battery also small. 2016 standard is at least 300mAH
The size of the battery is also influenced by the efficiency of the power management, and also the body. Bigger/thicker the body, more space to fit a larger battery.
Sony's got it right with their front facing speakers, and with an inclusion of a MicroSD slot. The screen seems to be another IPS LCD since they're stating Triluminos in there.
Audiophiles will certainly take kindly to the 24-bit capable sound output, but the battery size at 2900 mAh sounds a little hampering. And if it's one thing when it comes to repairing waterproof phones from them - don't do it.
But reading the price labels when it arrives - well, knowing Sony I'd cringe.
They might shock us with the pricing again, I guess. RM 2799, perhaps?
Not sure if it's worth waiting.
I'm still with my Z and thinking of switching to Huawei, hope they can launch it here this month so I can know whether I should stay with Sony or get outta the bandwagon for a while.

May his intention is to creat the xperia xz specific thread?
The other thread are mainly for previous x series i.e. xpeira x, x performance...
Same thing la, why there are galaxy note 5, note 7, galaxy s5, s6, s7 separate threads.
Why no one ask them to combine all galaxy note series into one thread, all galaxy s into one and so on?
Indeed. Hard to talk specifically about XZ when the tread mix up like that. This one dedicated to Sony flagship XZ only as xperia barely get the attention lately
seem like there is still "painting" like effect on the picture, especially the indoor picture, it is so obvious when u zoom in the picture...sigh, this is not good, that was the main reason why i ditched the z5 premium due to the "painting" effect when taking low light pictures..

technically does not have but if i were to remember, there are 3rd party accessories for Z5 to support it. so that means, 3rd party accessories maker will make one for XZ.
Preview review from GSMArena.. May have a draft idea on this phone.. Sounds quite positive from them but still do have some negative feedback from them.. See how consumer would want to balance it up.
Better photo quality than X Performance and Z5 Premium but still grainy to able to compare to S7 Edge, IPhone 6S, HTC 10, LG G5 and Huawei P9.
You have more control in manual mode. Reduce the ISO in darker situation. Its 23MP sensor you have many way to play with it if you don't really relay on superior auto mode

Well not sure about recent xperia phone. But for my current z1 I found that using manual mode but keep all settings in auto and off the image stabilization actually give overall the best photo quality. That's the best easiest mode I use in my z1.

There's an extra benefit for the full manual controls. For those whom wanted to create light trail effects, with the right equipment, they can make it. Also, it's good to compensate the high ISO with a lower shutter speed, to reduce noise.
EDIT : oh why, Sony. why you make full manual control, but SS only can go up to 1 sec?

Well, not a big downgrade though. From 4GB to 3GB RAM is still acceptable as long it's smooth. For screen, I still prefer LCD over AMOLED. Plus, I love the front facing stereo speakers and software. 2 of my Sony phones have yet to lag on me.
EDIT : I may miss the S Pen as it served me well during work.

you win already but screen is smaller and camera might worse
That's why I'm looking at it as my working phone. Camera, judging by the samples, luckily Sony did improve with the XZ. Might not be the best but still it does a good job.

I had seen some sample online, this time Sony seems finally did it better in camera photo output.
Not much complain on camera output already this time, just the screen size, haizz... if 5.5" will be my main phone already.
S7 or Note7 now got big issue which is I didn't like much - over sharpening.
Even my mom's note4 I noticed that. In some photos the people look so sharpened that it look like the person is cut-and-paste into the pic and looks unnatural.
not saying sony camera is the best. It was never the best in smartphone. But honestly it's still able to take good photos. Not the best but definitely still consider good.

Samsung always got sharpening issue but the sharpening is tone down a lot in Note5 which make the photo much natural. Samsung is fire up the sharpening again in S7 Edge and frank speak from photo seen online, Note7 is way too much sharpening up.
Sony camera wise I never really like it much, all got that badly oil painting issue but the sample I seen from XZ finally reduce a lot, at least it looks nice now.

Note 7 has the worst sharpening actually. S7E still okay.
If camera quality is really a huge factor, why not just get a DSLR? Nowadays you can also directly share your pics through Facebook and social media, plus much more efficiency, instead of complaining phones camera issue, cause for a camera guy, phone camera is definitely not enough.

You know how big and heavy the DSLR right? Most people won't carrying it everyday. Only enthusiast or photographer may do so.
Phone camera can anytime capture special moment as it is with you all time but not the DSLR for most people.
That the reason why phone camera became main subject and main target for people to choose upgrade his/her phone not the heavy DSLR or the near dying normal digital camera.

Not necessarily DSLR, maybe a small, portable digital camera that costs 1k with fast speed. What I'm trying to point out is that we shouldn't expect so much from a phone, which isn't specialize in camera, but if camera is really a priority, getting a digital camera would be more efficient and cheaper.

Yeah, sadly phone camera are usually good in like colors and life environment, but not at details and documents. The lack of true-zoom in smartphones is also another cons and might not be possible because companies are making their phones thinner and thinner, instead of making it thicker and gives more ability to the phone.

Most people want is brilliant output from mobile camera not spend extra to buy those portable digital camera, it is huge burden to carry those portable digital camera also, where you gonna put? inside bag? Not everyone carrying bag, inside pocket? Sorry it still kind of bulky and not comfortable to carry one pocket phone, another pocket portable digital camera.
Portable digital camera is dying, not much people will buying it anymore because phone can do it and did it brilliantly, and camera in phone will keep better and better.
DSLR still will be there and possible forever but portable digital camera? No point buying it at all.
Now camera in phone is priority, most people will check camera in phone than others functions.

I get your point, but I think phone is constantly downgrading their capability by making it thinner, I think camera won't go far in mobile, UNLESS they made a modular parts for it with much bigger sensor and all.

Thinner is last year trend, this year seems nobody talk on slimming down anymore. Hehe
Technology keep update, we won't know what will appear in future. Possible new thing coming out, not matter how I believe camera is main point in mobile at least this few years or maybe forever. Haha.
people are demand too much.. but the theory behind of photography is not breakable.. small sensor in smartphone camera will not achieve any special wow impact..
even the professional also need proper lighting/tripod for photography.. so dont expect any smartphone camera can exceed DSLR/real camera in real life..
smartphone camera are usable for daily life capture.. expect some blur/noise.. other than that, all manufacturers are trying to deliver something to attract some new buyers and feel their products are WOW.. in fact, still under 1/2.3 inch sensor or 1/3.2 inch sensor..

People not expect until that level of DSLR. Just a clear details image, no oil painting effect, no too crazy noise, no side blur issue. That it. (I am criticizing all previous Sony phone issue, haha oops)..
Added features like optical zoom and extreme wide angle or even the pure black and white is welcome.

I dont mind anything that come from Sony as long as they make Z Ultra successor. Make it XZ Ultra with 6.44" please, not 6". Been waiting since then, but Xiaomi did it with Mi Max.

As long as hp camera sensor is small compare to digital camera than hp camera will nvr win in image quality Unless ur pic is for wasap n fb or ig, then it's ok.
But for special moment or event that need to be remembered, digital camera is still better.
For me, i rather buy cheap rm500 hp n 2nd hand camera like rx100mk2 for rm1.5k instead of pay 2.5k for hp only

I use a flagship phone (cmon, its with you for the longest period of time), a compact shared among family, and a DSLR in cast I want to be a professional.

I believe Z Ultra is already permanent history, no more next version.

Phone with you all time not the 2nd hand digital camera.

Rx100 is ur hp size, not bulky as dslr. Only 240gm. If dslr, me also dun wan to bring. At least can get 2 advantage which hp kenot do - high shutter speed for moving subject - high iso for low light
just got notification. but damn, it's an email from Dell newsletter.
side note, i have decided. this time, the Xperia XZ will be the first phone ever in my life, that is not silver/white/platinum. i will go for the most special color, Forest Blue.

Blue is the best and most unique color... Good if u use it naked. My only concern is it may be less casing/cover choice cos not all colors will match the forest blue
black is the most common ones. Easiest to match any casing/cover color... I'm those that like to change casing every few months... Also according to gsmarena the black is like 2 tone color. Different angle or lighting the black will look different shade... Kinda unique too I think.
I'm not so keen on the Platinum now. But still need to get hands on b4 deciding which color to go for

yeah, black is 2 tone, an angle shows black, and the other shows dark brown. the blue is the same as well, the platinum is pretty much like most of the silver colored aluminium built phones out there.
Not exactly about the XZ but just downloaded and installed a 768mb update on my XA. Can't really tell what it is about other than a slightly different.. launcher? Coming from HTC, why doesn't Sony updates tell us whats changed and what not..?
however, the news is pretty vague, on the total amount especially. if someone can leak the total amount sold, it is better. still, however, it's good to see the XZ is doing well in Taiwan. cant wait to get my Forest Blue.

Well, Taiwan have more Sony users and fans actually. Not only that, their service in Taiwan is pretty good, and it's not outsourced to 3rd party companies.
Meanwhile, let's see how good the XZ does in video stabilization.

Referring to BtekT review...the camera still got overheating problem. In my experience with Xperia Z3 and Z5 this is the biggest dissapointment. Almost one time feel like want to throw away the phone to the floor. Lucky its only apps problem and still can used google camera apps for shooting.
Assuming after Tax and GST would be about RM 2999 but will it comes with freebies?

Why sony why
Overheating sometimes as heat as my current Note 4 too.
Under Image Quality section, comment by PhoneArena "Sony seems to have changed that quite a bit with the XZ, which takes pictures that have a very noticeable contrast, saturation and sharpening boost. Despite this quite obvious oversharpening, in areas of uniform color, details appear smudged out and not all that clear. Some artifacts like color fringing are also particularly easy to notice."
"Image quality on the Xperia XZ is fine, but by no means extraordinary or even on par with devices like the Apple iPhone 7 series, Samsung’s Galaxy S7 family, LG’s G5, or the HTC 10."
I agree all..., add-on the side still blur out like Z5. Not really an improvement.

Expected... Been using z1 for 3 years and I seldom use superior auto. I'm no pro in photography but I do notice that superior auto mode tends to boost up the iso and pictures usually end up overexpose and grainy. I've been using manual 8mp and leave all settings in auto. This mode gives better result than superior auto mode.
Why Sony does not have a fingerprint scanner in the US? I cannot brain this enough especially when it comes with an 820.
It's a business decision...
But it's only disabled on the software. The fingerprint sensor is there actually. If they flash other regions' firmware, they'll get the fingerprint sensor working.

There are plenty of rumors out there, one being the most believable is the copyright infringement of pattern to Hewlett Package. HP had the copyright of the fingerprint scanner on power button.
Same as XPerf, Z5, the hardware still there, just didn't gets activated by the software. If one flash a Europe firmware then it can be use.
I see. Then it should be no problem to flash as the phones are unlocked and not tie to the telco. Should be safe as Sony hopefully will close one eye on this.

Only Sony got this issue and it manual mode also not good until where. Never change and I believe forever won't as maybe they have no idea to get a better photo process output.

Yup. But like o said b4, to me it's good enough la... Just wondering why they never get the cybershot team to write the sw for xperia

oh well, i can converse in Mandarin, Canto and Hakka actually.
back on topic : somehow i assume the pricing will be RM3099 for XZ. cant wait for 30 September, and that is the time i got my paycheck.
There's no problem with Z5, and Z3+ never released in MY

Z5 is fine actually, Z3+ is the necessary one. The cooling on Z5 is better than Z3+.
I was impressed with the Z2, and the same for the Z3 which my wife had.
When the Z3+ was out, I picked it up (SG set) but was disappointed with the performance. Same with the Z5 and my wife's Z5 compact, always lagging, slow, battery life appalling.. felt more like a downgrade from the Z2/Z3 (minus the larger internal memory).
It's ok, Xperia XZ is here to hopefully turn the tide with the S820. LOL.
So far any update receive fr Sony after we register for interest? On the 30th can we get the phone at the launching or we can only Pre-order through 11st?

Haven't got the email yet. On 30th September, just only pre order.
but usually MY price won't be direct convert from SG right? it's usually lower than that...
BTW, any idea what bluetooth headphone comes as freebies? does it support those NC and hi res audio stuff?
just saw the Sony center in BTS put up the XZ pre-order poster and comes with the same RM600 freebies. no price mention as well...
Yeah. Not only that, tax/GST those aren't even calculated yet.
The freebie, if you read the poster thoroughly, it comes with SBH80. It doesn't support Hi res and NC but at least it has aptX, a hardware that makes sound quality via bluetooth sound better.
The Xperia XZ is well stocked on connectivity options. Our review unit is the single-SIM version (F8331 model name), but there's also a dual-SIM one (F8332). The slot in that case is of the hybrid variety though - it's either a second SIM or a microSD card - you can't have all three.
meaning dual sim variant don't have memory card slot ?
You still have the memory card slot but it's a hybrid slot, so it's either you choose a SIM card or memory card.
Providing the XZ Dual comes with 64GB internal memory, it's more than enough.
oh, now just get it, it's either second sim or a memory card, 64gb sounds a lot, but the current z2 with 16gb internal and 64gb external is barely enough for me, lol

With future app updates, 16GB is barely enough. The day when 16GB is still enough was 2 years back. So 64GB internal is quite huge for a flagship IMO.

i did. it's my company's phone, Sony Xperia Z. i returned it back after 11 months of use, due to a mysterious crack on top of the screen and top part of the touch capability malfunctioned.

Interesting that shipping date starts 6th October according to that site. Meaning we'll get it earlier than SG, a first as well as they usually get the phones earlier than we do.
should be same or better than X Performance since they using same camera sensor hence the result might or better than s7 / note 7 just wait for dx0mark result, and confirmed pawn iPhone 7
For this, blue is an almost given. So many flag ships out there that's black or white or silver or gold.
Blue proves to be something unique and special.
Also, have to hand it to Sony for breaking their usual tradition of super high pricing, and instead, choosing to launch it at a more competitive pricing.
I noticed 11 street mentioning shipping starting on the 6th October (Thursday). Hope this is true! That means 1 week till we'll get it in our hands?
this phone looks good but have to play on hand only know. still 1080p, note 7 is it 2k?
heard that snapdragon 820 got heating problem is it true?
also im wondering why the finger print sensor put aside...
i like the leaning behaviour like charging ur phone till 90% and stop, then tomorrow morning will help u charge till 100% to avoid for overcharge ur phone. good for ppl that always forgot to turn off the charger when go to sleep

this is the first time Sony did a very competitive pricing in Malaysia, however in other countries, the premium tradition is still there.

You don't need 2k for below 6 inch phones, it would not be noticeable anyway. SD810 was the one that has overheating problem and side fingerprint sensor is the BEST placing, cause front feels unnatural and you need to stretch, back is perfect placing, but cannot unlock while putting it on a table, but side is the best of both world!

Sorry, forgot to mention Malaysia market.
The other thing that Sony surprised me was the speed to the market. Pre-order and details within the month of announcement. All previous series was like 2-3 months wait before coming out.

This.
Just nice because I just sold my N7 (to my sister) & XZ manage to fill the vacuum just in time.
Oct 06 ya shall be it.

Actually I prefer front as when put on table it's easy to do that. I can't imagine how to do it via side. I dun like back placing neither.
Guys who got the phone faster share ur experience.

IMO we don't need 2k for below 20" screen my monitor, TV and laptop still 1080p

Put down your phone on a table and put your finger at the side. Done, pretty easy and simple, of course front is the best for front, but sacrifices natural hand positioning that side and back has.
Everyone has their own preferences about the location of fingerprint scanners. While i personally like Sony's side mounted fingerprint scanner, i also like LG and Huawei's back mounted scanners as well. If there's such technology as fingerprint scanner on screen, i think we don't ever need to rant which is ideally the best location to fit a fingerprint scanner.
Side note : I've played with the X Compact and the fingerprint scanner is blazing fast. Just press the power button and it's unlocked, split seconds faster than other competitors.

I think with Sony double tap function, scanner isn't much of a concer anyway.

ahaha..if can..i would like to have a front, rear and site fingerprint scanner....every position is convenient according to different situation =D
it is in Taiwanese Chinese. there are 2 sets of screen protector, one for the screen, lens and sensor part and the other is for the back, top and bottom part.

You test and let us know the outcome. XZ is 2.5D I worry that TG doesn't do well...
Right now I see front only for xz. Sure I'll test since I already order. They say since the glass is 2.5d so this sp only sick on the side. The middle part will not stick to the screen. Anyway I'll see how it is after receiving it
Why dont you po on 11street? you could still getting forest blue colour and free SBH 80 + 64GB OTG + Screen Protector + Case.
Don't really like to do online transaction if not needed. Plus, for me either black or blue is good enough just do not need for the colour to reflect much light like the silver colour.
Also, 17 Oct.

Yeah. I remember he said that he won't carry anymore Sony brand, due to lower sales figure compared to other brands like Apple.

Managed to hold and try the XZ yesterday.. it does look good.. thinking of going for it to replace my Z3... really scared of the pricing of all flagship phone nowdays..
HAve been using Xperia Z1 and then Z3.. thinking of changing brand.. or still sticking with xperia. I was hooked with xperia Z due to the magnetic charging.. but not in the X series it seems..

me too... had been thinking of changing other brand but then other brand design just don't quite do it for me
So hows the camera for those who already test on it?
The camera is quite good, the colours are quite verisimilitude. But, I'm not a fan of camera though. Zooming would have some blurry, but I guess that's quite common for all phones.
Planning to get one, but not sure to get the additional earpiece mdr-wn750n. Anyone using this earpiece?
Using my camera to take a better photo of the Platinum and Forest Blue demo set Xperia XZ. No front photos...
Edit : mineral black photos? Don't bother about it.
Why? Mineral black probably my first choice before seeing the real unit. When z3 launched, i so loved the silver green by photo. When seeing the real phone, it was disappointing me. That's why this time preorder without choosing colour.

Yup. I like the black actually but too feel that it's too mainstrem and nothing unique about it. I may stop by klcc and get more hands on . Who knows I might change my mind later?

my eyes were set dead straight for Forest Blue, and i ordered it at the Sony Center im working at.
what i meant is compared to the competition. Samsung, apple, heck even asus is jumping beyond 5.5" screen size. 5.2 is too small for me... i was using the Honor 7 and was straining my eyes on the 5" screen.

ikr, anyway, im still going to give it a try.. can always sell it off later.
i suppose so...i'll be damn pissed if i who POed get my unit later than those who walk in and buy on 7th Oct...
hey... u should have more insider info right?
Don't worry.. You definitely will get the items. But to reduce the piss off feelings, try to not follow forum. They will be the earliest to got stocks.. Haha.

not really. unlike before, i barely have access to authorities.
Indeed, 1 things Preorder may get a lot of free gifts.. But delivery date and time.all.under t&c.. My case was late delivery plus delayed my free gifts. Although I have it in the end.. But i understand the feeling.

glad that im not a Brazilian. if compared to other markets, MY is one of the cheapest.
yes.. initially i thought taiwan should be cheapest.. 22990TWD, but in the end 2699 in MYR is better consider the exchange rate is 7.5 TWD to 1 MYR recently.. Going to taiwan end of oct so i keep monitoring the exchange rate.

TW selling at 600 tw dollar, convert to myr just 79+, lol 200+% profit
seller cannot blame on malaysian why sony accessories sales are low.. because of their own profit margin and cause low sales..
