Regarding the wormman story, everyone should see things logically. There is always a second opinion required.

I am not too sure about what the wormman involved, but logically, if there is something that is easy to breed, high production, fast to see results... in very short time you can expect to see that there will be same thing happening to the graph - from over demand to over supply.

With all the get-rich-quicker who promised/dreamed about sky high in one step around, you can pretty much kiss all the downstream industries goodbye because all focused on quick cash.

Vermiculture is not some get-rich-quick tools to start with, it has some environmental protection, sustainability and nutrient recycling benefit but people are miss using this excuse to make profit, therefore kill the business real quick.

QUOTE(lokideangelus @ Jan 25 2010, 03:14 PM)
i heard from a friend of mine it is a lucrative business that can be considered. Is it difficult to breed and rare them ?is there market for them in malaysia ?

do you require a large space to breed and cultivate them ?

is there any specific species that is only marketable ?

There is no free lunch in this world, everything has its difficulty.

Has your friend started any leech farm? If so he might know more then me. If he is a hear-say, well, here is my limited understanding of this subject.

Of course you dont need any scale to "start" any leech farm, but were you able to gain any considerable output, that is another question.

Here are the economics I know about.

Factories who might want to buy your leeches: RM60/kg
Medical entities who might want to buy your leeches: 100s /kg

How many kg of leeches you can expect to rear on one particular fibre tank? Of course you need to have some kind of scale to be profitable at RM60 per kg of leeches rite? So now you thinks that the hospitals are willing to pay you RM500 per kg of leeches, remember, if each leeches is at 50g you gonna have 20 huge leeches in 1kg, which is a lot, how many tonnes you expect our local hospitals would consume in one day? Remember, if it is too expensive, and its easy to raise, and the hospital needs lots of them, they can always set up a leech department, since it was mentioned that it can start small above, and hospitals have all the mad labs and equipments.

Then, you would need live keli fish to feed your adult leeches, for their thirst of blood, and for the baby leeches, it is said to prey on small invertebrates like snails. In conclusion, you will always required live bait to feed them. Fresh feed is certainly cost more then processed food, and more hassle too.
(added: I read years ago that commercial leech farm pump fresh cow blood into cow intestine to feed lots of leeches all at once, so you have to think where you can get fresh cow blood and their intestines)

Last but not least, let's say you are able to raise and keep tonnes of them at your backyard, another very pressing issue is how to prevent them from escaping or swarm on you while you are sleeping... (at least earthworms are vegetarian)

Furthermore, another main issue is, as you have asked, what species? Upon each leech training, you will most likely required to purchase breeders from your trainer, at a much higher price then RM60. Hence this is where their income from.

But as I mentioned earlier, if your friend was already leech farming, he might be better informed them I am, hence you should refer to him.

Hello to all agriprenuers,

Im currently growing Australian Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) and have in stocked of around 8mT. About 24% is ranging from 500gm-700gm (marketable plate sized fish) and the rest ranges from 200-490gm. It is growned under a CRAS system and been fed with pallets. Fingerlings are imported direct from australia so i can assure you the best of its quality.

We sell them freshly chilled whole fish, Live, processed (gutted, gilled, scaled,), processed and individually frozen blast, and also packaged (vacuumed packed) under the brand AQ fish. All this with a opening price at RM23-25/Kg.

My question is, will the market accepts this product (in west M'sia/world) at the given price. If not any recommendation of its best selling price, considering the production costs? I know i should have gone into exporting them but where to? any suggestion/contacts/networks?

We have acchieved a production of 7mt/ month before and currently stocking in more and more so we would be achieving at least 8mT/month by next year, its a whole large scale production and its achievable. But i would like to secure buyers before we really set our mind to produce that much. Please any suggestion/help/interested buyers will be really helpful.

Thank you.

hi,

Our company are doing import/export on cows, sheeps but mostly Boer goats for breed and slaughter from Australia. We got several farms in Selangor.

Our company has grown rapidly since 2006. We have the support and cooperation from MARDI. In collaboration with MARDI, we have several times held the course about Boer goats. The purpose of this course is to provide guidance to more clearly so that participants better understand and learn all about goat care.

Anyway if anyone want to buy any do PM me. Besides breeding/slaughter, we also offer Aqiqah & Korban for Muslims

hi rexis & para, stumbled upon this thread. you 2 have started on ur own agriculture/ aquaculture business yet?

i'm interested in both ... however sometimes i doubt myself because i have no agriculture background, i'm automation + IT background.

i'm learning from internet and have a consultant, visit few farms to learn ... confidence level is increasing, but still waiting the right time to tender resignation and put my theory into action.

maybe 2 of u can share some knowledge or advice.

Hey Rexis, Para. Long time no see lar.. How are you guys? I trust your agribusinesses have soared.

Just to update you guys, I'm no longer working as a plant scientist for the plantation business. Instead, I've hung up my labcoat and I'm now working for the government to further develop the biotech industry.

Maybe I could answer happy_gal on the question asked:
Don't take this the wrong way, but I see that your aptitude for business is still green. Any business will take time to mature, and of all businesses, agriculture takes the longest. Compare apple to apple lar... Not those who cheat people to part with their money sort...

Para, correct me if I'm wrong on this. The average ROI for an established ornamental/commercial fish farm is between 15% to 25%; exceptional ones can and do make above 30%, but that's only when demand for specific fish breeds are high, like grouper or snapper. In terms of time to get end result, well that really depends; poorly planned and executed, business can fold within a month or less, but I don't think that's the result you are looking for. Adequately planned, it can take 2-3 years before the business gets sure footing, and begins generating real profits.

Correct me if I'm wrong, happy_gal, but I'm guessing when you refer to ornamental fish, you are refering to breeding arowanas, right? A real hot item these days, but entirely unsustainable. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about breeding and conserving the fish; I just can't justify 250,000 fishes selling at an average of RM3,000 (or RM750million sales) a year having a sustainable pool of buyers. I just hope that the arowana does not end up like the Flowerhorn.

hi.
i'm an IT student in one of local university. this is my last semester of my study.
after finish my degree, i want to go into agriculture and aquaculture.

my plan is to do aquaculture first because my family already have a pond at my hometown. im from sarawak.
for the start, i want to start with raising tilapia fish.

really need a guide on how to start. what should i do first?

this is the layout of the land in sarawak. the land is 5 ekar. the one i mark with red is the pond.
the size of the pond is around 25000 sq feet.
last year we already try to put 1000 tilapia to test. and after 6 month, the average of the fish is 750g ~ 1kg.

please advice.
