well if you can bring them to the sc they can do a check for you... but its up to the dealer if they want to allow you to send it in for inspection.....

Mine is 38k (demo car so its pre-reg right) half than the price for a new car, worth it?

2nd hand value for that car is memang around that figure, the dealin itself isnt anything impressive (the resale value of this car is practically nonexistent anyway). the maintenance figures can be very scary but i assume you have done your homework on the car....

QUOTE(DoomCognition @ Mar 12 2017, 12:15 PM)
This car will not be for me, but for my girlfriend.  She is a typical lady with 0 knowledge on cars, so am now looking for a reliable and safe car for her.  I initially wanted to get her a BMW E36 or E46, but decided against it as she will likely want a car just to get from point A to point B, and not care about the ride comfort or handling.  For me, age of the car does not really matter, and more importantly is the reliability.  Like most women drivers, she will likely not care about temperature and will not be sensitive to any anomalies in the cars in everyday usage, which is why I need to get her a reliable car.

I am fairly well acquainted with maintaining an old car, so no problem in getting a 10 year old car as well.  I still have about a year to hunt for the car, so have time to search for a well maintained unit (as long as it is not too rare).

What I have in mind now are the following:

1.  Toyota Altis (Corolla) 2003 to 2007 - around 30K

Read about this car, which is mostly bullet proof and a step above Vios in terms of comfort. Has 4-Star EU NCAP rating.
bulletproof? yes. nicer than vios? yes. parts also more expensive than a vios. nothing much to add here..

2.  Nissan X-Trail 2000 to 2005 - around 35K

Won many awards when it was launched, but was told that maintenance will be higher than Toyota Altis due to it being 4WD.  Also seems to have rust issues around the door (based on a Nissan engineer).
frankly, this car is more expensive than the altis one cause it has 4wd... and two (if you are considering the turbo) its got a turbo..... both also point to a higher fc.
These cars are  for people who want a powerful 4 wheel drive automatic machine.
**if you are looking at the na variant, might i suggest the x-trail or its cousin, the dualist~

3.  Proton Inspira (actually is a Lancer) 2011 to 2012 - slightly above 40K

Seems like a good option to buy a rebadged car since was told first generation is 90% the same as Lancer.
i do like this car but its lacking in some safety features.

Preferably not Proton.  Did consider Myvi but other older options like the ones above seems better as am getting better comfort and safety for a nominally higher maintenance.
1. Brand  -  Preferably not Perodua or Proton, with the exception of rebadged models such as Inspira.
2. Budget - Up to 40K
3. New/Used/Unreg. -  Used / Recon
4. Specs - Doesn't matter
5. Transmission.  - Auto only
6. NA or FI ? -  Does not matter
7. Type. -  Does not really matter for size, but preference towards smallish B o C segment cars.
8. Remarks - Priority in terms of reliability and safety and secondly would be maintenance cost.  I can tolerate higher FC.

Planned to use it as UBer/Grab car part time car.
*
better ask uber/grab about their policies..... cars above a certain age are not allowed to work under them. no point getting a car that is allowed to run under them for only a year

Guys, I am looking for a car own drive. In between VW Polo 1.6 / PG 408 2.0 / Nissan Almera / Mazda 2, which car is better?
Thanks!
*
one needs to define better.... diferent cars are 'better' suited to diferent people.
**the prices of all these cars are all over the place, not sure what you are looking for.
VW Polo 1.6

PG 408 2.0
-zenix mentioned some very good deals
-expect the car's resale value to be abysmal.

Nissan Almera
-simple car, nothing really impressive. sad.gif cant even recall the specs but iirc, kinda outdone by the competition, vios city

Mazda 2
-sitting in the car, it extrudes a sporty vibe
-if you are tall, its terribad

interestingly, where's the vios/city? almera and m2 are there~ hmm.gif

Dear all, currently in dilemma choosing between a new Axia Standard G Auto or used Nissan Latio / Sentra for everyday drive to work.
Budget is 35K max.
The axia is straight to the point coz its fuel saving and gets the job done, nothing more.
In the other hand, used to own a Nissan Sentra super saloon and had first hand experience of how reliable a Nissan can be (despite minor issues here and there due to its age).
Currently more towards a 2010 Latio 1.6 because Axia is abit small in my opinion but its new so I dont have to worry about its maintenance for the next 5 years?
Haven't purchased an used car before so abit scared of being scammed >.<
Your kind inputs are much appreciated.
*
the latio is 7 years old, you will need to spend some money maintaining it. absorbers, bushings, coil packs (a common failure item)and basically wear and tear stuff might need replacing.

Yeah Vento is a new one i guess. Actually more keen to this due to its size compare to polo hatchback.

My option would be almera, will be using the car daily for more than 100km per day at least in Klang Valley. So pug is out of the picture.

Thanks for suggesting but wont be looking at Passat, over my budget for sure.
*
if you are able to afford a mazda 2... the city/vios will fit your budget as well...

you need to provide more details, budget, size requirements, used/local cars ok?
still have no idea what your priorities are other than modest fc & low running costs
80k (i assume) budget plus the 2 deduced requirements, you can consider local cars as well...

Any other suggestions?

other than the fact that her budget is around 40k and u guys want a reliable car..... better make sure she has no issues driving about in a large car like the airtrek 1st.

common reliable sedans
-vios/altis - both reliable as heck, not exactly loaded to the brim in the equipment list.
-city (the 2nd latest gen with the 4 speed slushbox) - is also a reliable car
-inspira - i like this thing, its got the power, its got the looks (pray you get a stock unit not some beng kited one). No major issues tho some bits do cost abit. Mitsubishi bits after all. Oh yeah~ its as mentioned b4, not completely loaded with safety features.
-forte (try the 6 speed) - said to be a fairly reliable car, comes with all safety features as well. no known issues and spare parts are about the same as the altis.
-new saga - its new, problems balik to sc je warranty is a huge plus point~. got most safety gear. its abit small and well its a potong...

non-sedans
-airtrek - this is powerful but going to cost you
-xtrail/dualist - (if you want the na airtrek, these 2 deserve to be in the list) reliable large sized machines. running costs also higher than a typical sedan.
-caldina (if you wanted the fi airtrek) this deserves to be in. same with the fi airtrek, this gona cost you
-forrester (sf/sg) - (if you wanted the fi airtrek) this deserves to be in. this gona cost you EVEN MORE!!! but damn the boxer is nice.

random cars
-jazz - if u want a hatch city
-sx4 - similar to the swift just taller.
-rush/nautica - only here since you had some ideas about getting an airtrek.
-iriz - there are some old stock available... brand new cars for a very good deal. cant remember where i read about this
-celica - only sports car here, its old but reliable. manuals are decent, autos not fast but look good. (low end celica's share the same heart as the altis, high end ones sort of work the same as the vtecs, the good vtecs mind you not the crap the new vtecs have)

Honda Family?City, Jazz Civic

but i still like the bemmer options tho  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif

beemers are nice cars (e46 being more refined ofc) but regardless of what owners will tell you, these things will need to be looked after properly.
Owning a car this old, there will be things you have to live with and visits to the mechanic is usually one of them. You will have to pay attention to it otherwise things go really bad really fast.

Good days guys,

My best friend wanna let go his Nissan Teana 2.5 (2011) to me at RM 70k, mileage around 80k, is this a good buy? and what the 2nd hand car interested now?

TQ.
*
price is about avarage, 65-70+k, milage is around average as well, all in all, its a 'just alright' deal... you may or may not find another car for less but if its a friend's car, at least you know its not been tampered with and its history. Am not sure if anyone else is interested in these cars... really depends on you?? blink.gif weird question this is.

QUOTE(ycf71 @ Mar 14 2017, 01:20 AM)
This v6 engine is powerfull and smooth but fuel comsumption high and maintenance not cheap. Suitable for long distance highway drive . My uncle has one and he plans  to trade-in for new camry 2.0. Also spareparts may be issue in future as this V6 engine no longer in production
*
its fc, is actually not as high as you think~ its only on the poor side in town and even so its still not going to be as bad as one might expect. (manage expectations yo, its a huge car.....). The maintanance yes, is on the high side. Spareparts NOT an issue, manufacturers tend to produce parts for a car long pass its days UNLESS you own a limited production model or a car with a super rare engine.

over 10? would look at ;
-the body/chassis for major damage, dings dents, well its a car usually parked in public and driven around, minor things are alright... (pull trim off and look underneath please, you see nothing without doing so)
-if you are for some reason looking at those more high tech/complex 10 yo machines, make sure electronics work... CHECK EVERYTHING
-bushings
-in general stains on the carpeting, pillars, belts... yada yada can be a sign of leaks (10 years old, sort of unlikely) or worst still, flooding

hey sifu sifu, i need some recommendation. currently im looking at honda jazz hybrid and toyota prius C. which one is better while both is around the same price? my budget is around 50-60k, looking for a car that save fuel, cheap maintenance and reliable. is there any other car that you guys would recommend? thank you!
*
Don't hear of issues with them and they have looong warranties. Given the resale of hybrids in malaysia both actually pretty cheap, but long term? nobody knows.
if something like the batteries fail, its alright, small sum just a few k... now what happens if the electric motor goes... good luck (fyi not a small sum... not small at all, tho its not a common occurrence) whistling.gif.
the prius with its more 'trueish' hybrid system does drink less fuel just so you know.

save fuel, cheap, reliable.... hmm.gif
bezza, axia.... < fulfill all 3 criterias easily and come with warranty just saying. innocent.gif

ChiaW3n been asking me about mini's so here is the less TLDR version

Mark1 (R50/53) from 2000 to 2006 uses the Tritec engine. Relatively bullet proof engine however the gearbox and clutch do let it down but generally cheaper way to keep it going is to just keep changing clutch plates when it wears off to save from repairing the gearbox, and of course keeping the gearbox fluids as fresh as possible. The Tritec engine isn't very refined so don't mistaken it's coarseness as a sign of trouble, maintaining here in Malaysia might be a challenge as this isn't a common engine plus it is pretty much beyond 10 years old so even if you don't get a lemon realistically anyone buying one of these now would be looking at, at least RM5000 for touch up here and there especially things like mountings and absorbers which are pass it's sell by date by now. Unless you've got a trusty mechanic that don't charge you an arm and a leg to maintain better keep away. So what's he price like? Well, the youngest R53 would be sub RM60k year 2006 car so loaning one would be an issue either loan reject or limited 3-4 years loan. Not ideal.

Mark2 (R56) from 2006 to 2014 uses the Prince engine. Prince engine is a joint venture of PSA group with BMW. PSA is Peugeot and Citroen at the moment with a few other marques joining soon. Anyway the prince engine is the basis for BMW's twin power turbo engines such as the N-series but have been improved on alot by BMW. Both the turbo and non-turbo had issues, e.g. timing chain issues, power loss, death rattle, etc. were all problems facing Prince and BMW N-series owners. Prince engine has it's issues but it is a very common engine in Malaysia as Peugeot 308, 408, 508 and RCZ along with Citroen DS5 all uses this engine or a variation of it so parts wouldn't be an issue but to get it to be as reliable as you possibly can you need someone whom really knows how to handle this engine which not many workshops/mechanics can. The R56's would be starting from RM60k onwards, some 2008 models can be had for about RM68k not really a problem to loan and even bargain for cheaper as he prince engine gives it a bad reputation but you have to be seriously aware of it's flaws.

Mark3 F55/56) from 2014 onwards uses the BMW B38 engine. Things got so bad from the previous engine BMW made sure their new engines were exceptionally good and also marketing wise made sure their dealers let customers know the new engine is a much improved 1500cc turbo by BMW not a 1600cc turbo from the previous JV. So far from 2014 until now the B38's have been quite reliable. However, the prices for this model starts at over RM100k even for a used one made in 2014 so not much of a value buy  doh.gif

so for anyone thinking of getting one under RM80k it is either the R53 or R56, basically both have issues it depends on which issues you rather deal with and able to handle.

as a high mileage daily drive, it maybe still possible but of course you can't be stingy on maintenance after buying and doing some betterment for it.
*
friend home has a mark 2 and a 308t..... according to him maintanance for both are rather similar, so far. He has only owned the mini for about 1 year now and the 308 for 2 so... dont know what they are like long term.
his only advice, DONT SKIMP on the maintenance!

I was thinking of getting this exact model, how's the maintenance like? Would it be too expensive even though milage is quite low?
*
define what is 'too expensive'.... to some, 1k or so per service is considered alright.... to others thats an abysmal amount. multiply that figure by 2 if its a service where 'things' need to come off and multiply by several times if its a major job.

This is one of the first beemers to be really loaded up with electronics and sensors. More stuff means more things which can potentially go wrong (sensors have a life expectancy and will fail as they age). The earlier batches from what i hear suffered some issues with the gearbox (never dug in detail if it was a really expensive fix or just an expensive fix)

make sure that odometer isn't tampered with otherwise you will be in for a damned nasty surprise.

I need some advices regarding used car.
Recently I purchase an used car however i found out there was some major problem on the car after i collected it. I found out the problem at the same day and then i returned it to the car dealer who in turn saying that will fix it.

Few days later I received a call from the dealer who claimed that no problem was found on the car, which is impossible due to it is a serious problem occurred.

May I know if i found out the problem still exist, can I refinance my loan to another car? Any police report should i filed beforehand?
*
Can I refinance my loan to another car?
-First, this is a really big question. What makes you think the dealer would take the car back from you? If you were to seel it back to him at a loss, maybe but for the full value after the deal is done? Its very unlikely they would even entertain you.

I refinance my loan to another car?
-dont think this is possible, basically before you can do any name changing of any sort, you must pay off all your loans for the vehicle.

Any police report should i filed beforehand?
-am not sure what you would write in the report. Might i ask whats wrong with the car in the 1st place.

**ahh just stalked your activities....

1)rusted top mounts, fine no issue whatsoever, its a used car, expect some wear and tear.long as the chassis isnt rusting, all good.
2)this overheating issue.... now this is something more major. you can do some troubleshooting yourself if the dealer won't help you. First step fluids.... always fluids, you can tell alot from the fluids (condition, level, color, temperature) alone....... then fans....
3)its not casket, its GASKET. the head gasket to be specific... if thats kaput, you're in for a overhaul. on the plus side, its just a myvi, not really that expensive (compare to some other cars out there)

2) bring it to radiator specialist, most likely plastic top cover leaking.

3) gaskets cheap but labor to replace them aren't.

All in all under 1000 to fix or 500 if you got hole

hahaha 2nd posible if coolant level is going down. workmanship.... oklah myvi, compared to more expensive cars, its almost as cheap as it gets. I diy checked my plugs on saturday.... never again do i want to attempt it. Better i pay someone to do it. laugh.gif

But i dont know how to check the condition of the engine, and what price i need to spend when i bought the car later. As for spare part, is it way cheaper than owning a BMW 320i? Can give example of any spare part for comparison? for maintenance, around RM800 for every 10k right? thanks

for these cars, general check, fluids look alright, smooth + diagnostics.... diagnostics will tell you most things. Its generally known to be a cheaper car to jaga than the beemerlah.... exact figs, best ask in an owners group... they can give you the most accurate answers. (if youre lucky, they might recognise the car)

Any of these cars worth considering? Or not worth looking at all? This will be my 2nd car, and main usage will be for city driving / short distance driving only, and most importantly, have best fc.

Thanks!

looking at that list, i ask these.
1)what do you feel about service centres (i enjoy my visits, neutral, waste of time and leaves, i would rather spend a day chewing grass) whistling.gif
2)what do you feel when you pay service centres (rage? happy? nothing? dissatisfied? etc)
3)short driving, why care about fc at all~ (actually not a relevant question, just curious)
4)i see you are looking at smaller hatchs + an almera for some reason, what do you think about a local badge?

Prefer good power/ handling.
Low road tax.
Occasionally travel.

I am looking either the coming soon 1.6T Elantra Sedan or 2014 used Q3 2.0T.
Any idea which one should I choose?
Currently, Im using a small hatchback car.

you do know how much maintaining a german car would cost you? you must know, that that car isnt a car anyone in general can deal with, it needs to be sent to specialists and its not going to be cheap. Heck its not going to be very affordable. Secondly, its 10 years old, you are going to have to deal with quite abit of wear and tear mega_shok.gif

since xemoboyx has already answered this, i agree with basically everything he has mentioned, the swift is quite a solid car. But i want to add, all in all, its not very loaded with equipment (cbu units im not sure)

the iriz also as mentioned, is a newer car. comes with more equiptment, more safety features and all that. maintanance is not really all that high, but where in the swift you have the option of 1/2 cut items, being a newer car, 1/2 cut items are less easy to find. Fiesta skip, noneed to get into that and the picanto, personally dont like the car. The rio is really loaded but read up about it, u might be less inclined to get one (tho friend has one, he loves it)

alternative options.... jazz, latio, azia (if you want a few years of headache freeness)
