Yup... seems like MAlaysians don't really like to buy projector. They'd rather buy LCD or plasma as they can watch their lovely Astro Valai toi... or Vanavil chanel. Kekeke... I've been telling u guys... until today, its my best investment I've done with my hard earn money so far...

I am up to my eyeballs in work and yet still have to find time to get de wiring/cables/powerpoints up - adding a shelf (in my case) to de back wall to place de Projector and last but not least to get de screen done and put up (I am customising own screen cos no money to get de branded ones)... In retrospect, if just go get Flat Panels can just buy / take home / plug in and enjoy liao...hehehe Now if they can only market a 100 inch one for RM5k... Dirtrun

Hi,
Just thought I'd do a short write up on my experiences wif de epson tw700 and my oppo 981 :
Time was approx 1Oam in de morning.
Contractor came to fix de shelf - measured wif de Pj as I did sum air vent customising so need to check whether my measurements were spot on - it was. They took about 45 mins to fix it up exactly where I wanted (tat is lens dead ctr of screen) but ended up about 2-3inches off, as apparently there were cables(in de wall) underneath de holes dat de mounts were supposed to be. Oh well ... we can only plan, right...
Venue : place was not de most ideal as my living room, even though is not bright( tinted glasses and also extended eves/roof so no direct sunlight ever penetrates) but is not dark enuff .
Plugged in de epson , punched in pattern - for de blue test pattern. Did de neccesarry focussing and moving of image(they call it lense shift - an optical thingy) to de desired position / got de size dat I wanted (96X54) focussed again and first impressions were - hey its not too bad, not as bright as de crt it replaced but still passable. Oh surprisingly I didnt need to configure de adjustable feet as de pics were spot on level - lucky I guess
Next hooked up both my old Pioneer 380 by component and Oppo 981 by hdmi to de epson and popped in LOTR-ROTK EE in de oppo. Hit de hdmi button on de oppo remote and got it up to 720p (my pj is 720p only) and played around wif de scan function to get de usual face scenes (gandalf in particular actually) and it looked pretty natural to me( of cos I am no expert and I could be wrong) - Times up - had to go pick up my kid in music class liao - so shut everything down(reluctantly...hehehe)
Enter time of 1030pm - popped Bridget Jones Diary - Edge of reason (wifeys choice) and watched de whole movie. I noticed de outdoor snow resort scenes to be most memorable cos I guess of its size (maklumlah all de time just watch on 2ft across space onlee - yup tats de fig for a 34inch diagonal screen) End of movie and wifey went to bed ... I popped my demo discs on - Chicken Run - Scene is inside de pie making machine which happens to be DTS es disc 6.1 encoded and wow for once I have de pics to accomodate my swollen audio section( I was on audio quest until lately mah)... there was other demo scenes lke spidey2's where Doc Ock first got hooked up (man, de surr worked overtime on tat) .... Flight of de Phoenix - crash landing scene(super bass tis one - but unfortunately it was abt 3am then so had to tone it down...hehehe) Oh ya, I also checked de diff between outputting at 480 from my 380 via components and de oppo's 720p and there is some diff - mind you, not nite and day diff but a finer smoother pic - I guess de only way to really tell is side by side comparison but dat is not possible for obvious reason in this case. I am also using de Theater Black(there are 5 or 6 diff settings for a bright to a totally dark environment) setting at de moment cos I am into economising and I read dat at tis setting I am running half brightness - so hopefully de bulb will last a little longer(wat to do, hard up joe dat I am...) Oh ya I forgot to mention all this is still being projected to a blank peach coloured wall as screen is still not up yet - still in construction as we speak...
Wifeys comments was, wah so big ah de picture - I guess it is kind of a shock to experience from - 24in horizontal to de current 8ft. It takes sum getting used , it does...
So for you guys who are fence sitters on dis subject , dont wait anymore cos really in this case, Size Does Matter...
Now I cant wait for de weekend again...hehehehe Dirtrun

Great write up dirtrun. Unlike Timothyy, I don't need pics.... coz we are EpsonTW700 braders oledi. So I know what you see . BW how far do you sit from thw screen and is the pixel structure visible. If it is visible does it bother you? Unfortunately, the projector is not a simple plug and play thingamajik like the LCD/Plasma/CRT set top boxes. I think you have to either build or convert your living room into a HT room to realise its full benefits. As such aside from the initial RM6k+ outlay, still have to think about the renovation, screen, and the list goes on. I watched Ultraviolet this afternoon, the colours are nice. Action sequence is really good and the fact that Milla has a nice bod is just bonus.... she did all the action sequence herself. Story is so so onilah. Actually I watch before on my 29inch, just wanted to watch it again on de big skrin again. Then just to give the audio section a further workout, I put on Eagles Hell Freezes over.

Thanks for all the sharing of experiences in this thread. I'm also thinking of going the projector route in future so the info here is very useful, a few questions:
1. Is there anyone who can provide calibration service in Malaysia? I understand this is needed to get optimal PQ.
2. To control the acoustics in the HT room, do you think I should carpet the floor? What else needs to be done?

jchong, it aint ez to do the acoustics treatment. Carpeting is 1 way to go. Try to look for Davis. He might be able to help u on this.
Musical Image and a few others cld do the calibration.
The problem with ppl not opting projector is that ppl perception of its 'blurry' image and a darkened room not to mention its short bulb life span compared to LCD TV or plasma. One man's meat is another man's poison.

For 1) Almost all AV shops who sell projectors or LCD/Plasma will have calibration services. Another way is self calibration... 2) Carpet is only 1 small part if you are talking about acoustic. If self made, you can try egg tray. Its one of the best acoustic material available other than the commercial type. If not, you might want to buy the foam type. If you want to do wall lining with rockwool and such, I know industrial guy. Kekekeke... Can make your door acoustic fireproof door also.
