QUOTE(mztang52 @ Jul 22 2016, 09:55 PM) LAN? For short distances, you don't use LAN. I think you are brain washed by someone, if not why do you always think of LAN? It's time to wake up bro! LAN is used when the WiFi is congested/too far away from the WiFi. When you don't have problems with that, you can easily receive the max speed. what's wrong with using Lan for short distances? WiFi congested? This post has been edited by ad2000: Jul 22 2016, 10:51 PM |

QUOTE(SilentForever @ Jul 22 2016, 09:13 PM) More appropriate term is Ethernet cable (or Unshielded Twisted Pair [UTP] cable). Your Wi-Fi is actually a type of LAN too, we call it Wireless LAN or WLAN.And I agree with you. Staying in a highrise condo, I gave up on getting optimum speeds on WLAN (in particular 2.4GHz). 5GHz works quite well provided I am close to the wireless router/AP but when moving further away or in another room, of course understanding how 5GHz works, the signal weakens. I now only use Ethernet cable to connect my laptops & devices with Ethernet ports whenever possible, such as in my living hall. However, at other rooms, I use HomePlug to bridge them. And Wi-Fi is only used to connect devices such as smartphones or devices that do not have Ethernet ports. |

QUOTE(ad2000 @ Jul 22 2016, 10:49 PM) what's wrong with using Lan for short distances? WiFi congested? Good choice! In fact, even if I am seated right next to the wireless router, I will still connect an Ethernet cable to it to my laptop! One useful info about wireless. Sometimes, I do drop by cafes and enjoy a cup of latte and connecting my laptop to the Wi-Fi hotspot to do some work. When the cafe is not crowded, the connection is stable & fast (I am talking about cafe with UniFi connection here). But at times when the cafe is crowded with at least 10 or more people inside, the connection became unstable! This explains another weakness of Wi-Fi. You may be in an area that is not crowded with neighboring APs such as in a highrise condo. But having 10 or more people connecting to an AP is enough to cause issues to you. |

Aiyo even my room is super small, my laptop is not even 30cm from the router, I still use WiFi. I don't like messy cables, self-preference.
