I also have the same problem I bought a presario V3128TU with freedos but when tried to install Xp, Xp could not detect my hardisk eventhough the sistem does. Then i boot with Win98 installation cd and manage to format the hardisk and manage to get 80 gig but when i tried again to install xp the installtion could not detect my hardisk again. I called the hp customer care centre and they said to disble to native sata support on the bios. I did and it manage to procedd but when it reboot the xp installation displayed a fatal error saying it cannot copied file to the hardisk.
Then i jump to the internet and seaching for an answer. It happened that XP is having problem is u install it on a sata drive. Have to F6 and load the sata driver manual via a floppy disk...haha..now come the biggest trick..this notebook does not come with a floppy disk..and how the hell im going to install the sata driver..and xp installation only recognize floppy as a medium to load the driver..
i hope this will shed some light and im still trying to find a solution to this.

I cant install my WinXP on my V3218TU, it says "Setup cannot find any hard-drive"

but i was able to boot the FreeDos. However, it says only 5.0GB free space left.

it sounds like the hard-disk is not yet formatted by the manufacturer.

Any ideas ??

i've tried the vista modem driver, can dial and connect - function as it is maybe compaq misplaced the driver (vista <-> xp). just found it weird that there's no driver for windows xp in their driver page.

for the sound, i have to remove the previous driver (amd) and then reinstall the vista ones - works too (although if u run the amd one, it will prompt an upgrade).

the only issues is the driver 'has not passed whql' alert..

try to use the vista driver. it works for me (the audio and modem), although i don't understand why.. (and maybe risky)

just need to disable the SATA in your bios , even u enabling it after u installed XP will caused bluescreen , so just make SATA disabled at the time , that's all
one more thing, for 3218 user , can your laptop go into STANDBY ??? Mine won't wake up , can anyone of you try on your lappy??? THANKS

Try another win xp sp2 disc. My friend also having the same problem but it solved after buy another version of sp2. May be that version cant support or got error. U using xp sp1 or lower? Try to change other version than that n see could help or not.

As for the Sound, i actually uninstalled it & decided to use the driver which is

found in the intel site under Intel 945GM chipset for onboard sound driver.

Btw, do this notebook support BT ? this is one which i miss remembering it.

is it ? later i try vista driver..

for now i have manually installed the XP driver ..it works..but it is hassle to install..

hahahhahaha....just buy used v3164 and upgrade the ram...... 1gb kigston ddr2 667 only 230

thanks for the advice......i was very close on buying a laptop from him but ended buying one HP laptop from Sri Komputers.....

btw, in my case he told me that he works in IMBI.......just PC or something.....yes, i did find a shop name Just PC if im not mistaken the other day.....but i didnt call her(earlier when I called him, he said just meet a Starbuck or something, he really tried to avoid my Q where's his shop until he finally mentioned about Just PC)....i just wanted to survey around......later that day I bought my laptop from sri kom.....
