Spontaneous escape is quite useless for Malaysian with 30% discount only as we need to buy KUL-SIN separately. Unless you're flying super long haul from SIN then you might still save a bit of miles

Anyone dumping some of their Amex expenses into Grab wallet/Boost this week? Thinking of dumping 1k into Boost and 1k into Grab...
*
QUOTE(fruitie @ Jul 1 2019, 03:17 PM)
Me. Already dumped 1.5k into Boost last night. Will try to max out 4.5k before 7th July.
As for Grab, I still have M2Cards AmEx which I will dump 1k there for RM 50 cash back and probably another RM 500 from AR since that's the maximum value a wallet can load.
*
Wah so aggressive ah 1k....I was thinking like RM 300-500 only

Will dump max 1.5k into Boost, 1.5k into Grab, 5k into TNG, 10k into BP. Plus I have 2 times of each account. Money can all be withdrawn / used for payments anyway, so for me, better to load max first

You win already haha....

2 mil airmiles = 10 mil TP (by today's conversion), did I get it right? sweat.gif

QUOTE(limeuu @ Jul 4 2019, 04:59 PM)
The only people redeeming 2mil miles are those paying for business expenses.....after cutting off gov, utilities, and e-wallets, not many people left with that kind of spend.....so it's over-correction by Maybank....

Just like ambank clamping down on lounge access....but over correct by removing all domestic accessible lounges.....

Times are bad, they're combating both "value" and "volume".
E-wallet despite low value, but volume is there

Their objective is obvious, they want to offer the best card to acquire customers.
Desired customers are normal people, who redeem some miles, some cash back, some other redemption, who owe some interest, etc, on average, Maybank make profit from these group of people.

Undesirable character - those abuser of e-wallet
Super rich - they don't want to subsidise these super rich with millions of miles

I don't think so. Someone checked before and shared a list of what MBB considers e-wallets. Not a long list only 5+ names. All the big names like Boost, BigPay, Grab, etc. Don't think I saw Lazada Wallet or other small ones like PrestoPay on the list.

We don't know yet

Don't we know the list? Unless we don't trust the person that posted that list. He said that he called MBB CS, they went to check with management, and they reverted with the list of merchants that are deemed as e-wallets. It wasn't a long list, though they "reserve the right to amend the list at anytime"

*
Not that I don't trust the person who checked, I don't trust Maybank CS providing the list verbally

But they earn merchant fees from top up.it is a good idea say they implement max amount  in order to to earn some points or cash back.exceed such amount , nothing will be rewarded.fair fair situation
*
MDR might not be able to cover their cost of cash back/ air miles, with e-wallet, it's too easy for us to "time" the spending, hence maximising card benefits

As the bank, if you're giving a promo you've calculated and already taken into account the cost. You have to make sure it covers the cost, all things considered. If I buy a 700 million painting on the same day MU wins I can also "time" my spending. Or on a smaller scale, say a Rolex watch that's 10s of thousands (which if I use MUVI, the bank gets a lower MDR rate than using Amex)
That's why a cap would have been a good compromise. But the boat has sailed, don't think MBB will revise their e-wallet policy
*
Of course they've calculated, but having said that, they still were very aggressive, when you see no other banks comes near to matching their miles, no where near.

But when they started with this card, they didn't foresee:-

- large volume of "abusers" using e-wallet to maximise the benefit
- large spending, maybe top 1% earning huge miles

With the above, they implemented control now, ie no TP for e-wallet, and cap of 2m miles for high net worth individual.

I'm still thankful they didn't take a more drastic steps of downgrading the earning, which affect all customers.

I use the word ‘buying’ because in this scenario, if I dont use the credit card in oversea, I would have change the forex cash at money changer (with lower rate) but earn no miles then use cash during the trip. If I were to swipe the credit card, it earn me air miles but pay higher rates due to bank charges. The diff rates I paid if using credit card (instead of cash) I deem it as the money I pay extra to buy the miles. Not sure if it is make sense  to look from this perspective.
*
Your assumption is logical, this is relevant costing, so yes, it can be considered as "buying" miles

unless you can very good rate from money changer, i don't think the rate has much difference whether using cash or card

Nowadays many competitive money changer out there which provide much better conversion vs credit card

From what I gather you plan to charge entire expense abroad into this card? FYI, it's going to be expensive accumulation of Miles. Say RM 80,000 FCY spending to be able to waive AF. That's RM1800 (2.25%) fee paid for 80,000 KF Miles. Not worth leh
*
IMO it's worth it, if you redeem business or better still, first class. Unless he can get an overseas card which offer some reasonable miles then that's different story

Anyone applied for the Emirates card and can confirm that e-wallet is included in the spending?
I've e-mail HL bank, no reply, called them, they cannot answer my question.
It's too risky to apply for this card and pay the annual fee if e-wallet is excluded

This promo rather useless, as you need separate booking from KUL-SIN and SIN-NRT, so if you add up it doesn't save that much, unless you book a very long haul flight, but then most of the promo doesn't include long haul.

This promo mostly only benefit those departing from SIN

For 2cards premier, I'll strongly suggest to use it instead of BP. Not only you earn miles for a small cost, I'm always more confident in card protection during fraud compared to BP.
