South Korea picks GE to supply engines for homegrown fighter jets

South Korea has picked General Electric Co (GE.N) to supply engines for its homegrown KF-X fighter jet project, preferring the U.S. giant over a European consortium in a deal that could be worth an estimated $3.5 billion.

The decision, announced on Thursday by the country's arms procurement agency marks the latest step in Seoul's multi-billion dollar plans to develop its own fighter jets to reduce its heavy reliance on the U.S. military for air defense.

The move gives GE preferred bidder status, with a contract expected to be finalised and signed in June. Financial details weren't disclosed, but South Korean media have estimated the deal could be worth about 4.08 trillion won.

Last year, South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration picked Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd (KAI) (047810.KS), which partners with Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N), to develop the 8.7 trillion won ($7.4 billion) KF-X jet project.

North and South Korea, in a technical state of war since their 1950-1953 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, are separated by the world's most heavily militarized border.

KAI plans to develop and produce 170 twin-engined jets initially, with 50 destined for export to Indonesia, a person with knowledge of the matter told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity because the situation was confidential.

More engines are expected to be sold if KAI successfully exports the KF-X to other countries seeking a relatively cheaper replacement for their U.S.-supplied jets.

To power the aircraft, KAI has opted for F414-GE-400 engines, produced by GE Aviation, over a rival bid to supply Eurojet EJ200 engines, made by a consortium that includes Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (RR.L) and MTU Aero Engines AG (MTXGn.DE).

GE Aviation scored better results than Eurojet in all four main criteria for the contract, the DAPA said in a statement: technology, costs, localization and management.

South Korea plans to localize production of parts of the KF-X engines by 2022, according to the DAPA.

Haha it bugs me when I mention police force deployed at Lahad Datu incident, some people imagine that beat cops in blue, armed with revolvers, (like those patrolling their neighborhood), went to fight the Sulu intruders back then.

At least one person was genuinely surprised when I said the PGA are fully trained and armed paramilitary troopers. When I explained that PGA was sort of like soldiers belonging to the PDRM, the only reaction I got was "Got such thing meh?". laugh.gif

Considering only 2 troopers were KIA, I'd say the PGA did a good job. Note that the Army also lost 2 soldiers, although one of them died in a traffic accident.

People who always cited that the PDRM lost a lot of men conveniently forgot that out of the 10 total casualties including the above, 6 were plainclothes Special Branch officers who were ambushed by heavily armed gunmen in Semporna water village.

They were investigating a tip off. Most probably thought it was just hearsay. Walked into a bunch of heavily armed intruders.

U.S. Troops 18 Miles From ISIS Capital

QUOTE
FATISAH, Syria — Ever since U.S. President Barack Obama decided to send 250 more Special Forces to the Syrian battlefield against the so-called Islamic State, they’ve been easy to spot on the front lines in Hasakah, Tisreen Dam, and near Raqqa, the capital of the “caliphate” that’s also called ISIS, ISIL, and Daesh
QUOTE
“However, U.S. Special Operations Forces and their counterparts typically swap unit patches as a method to build trust. This small act builds rapport and serves as a sign of cooperation, which we traditionally employed in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Jordan.”
QUOTE
Privately, U.S. officials concede the policy is evolving as it happens. The current plan is for Kurdish forces, who now are about 30 miles north of Raqqa, will only go another 10 miles south. After that, the newly trained Arab forces, known as the Syrian Arab Coalition, will lead the fight into Raqqa
QUOTE
“They are focused on capturing northern Raqqa, not Raqqa city itself,” Salih Muslim, the leader YPG-allied Democratic Union Party (PYD), told The Daily Beast in his house. “For liberating Raqqa city, we need many other steps like preparing for the next administration of Raqqa,” he said. The Kurds did set up a city council for the city of Manbij, but so far they haven’t for the city of Raqqa, despite requests from Arabs in Tal Abyad whose families are under ISIS control in Raqqa
QUOTE
British special forces from the SAS were at the small base we were visiting. He did not want to talk on the record, however. In the background, airstrikes could be seen hitting ISIS targets
QUOTE
“British, Americans, French Special Forces are involved,” he added. “When we see foreign fighters and foreign volunteers help us to fight terrorists, this raises is our morale,”

Watch the Navy's LOCUST Launcher Fire Off a Swarm of Autonomous Drones

Last year, the Navy announced the Low-Cost UAV Swarming Technology (LOCUST) program, a plane to build a launcher that could first dozens of drones out of a tube to create a vicious swarm designed to "autonomously overwhelm an adversary."

A recent video posted to YouTube by U.S. Navy Research shows the latest demo from last month, in which the launchers just effortlessly throw a swarm of nine into the air with a serious of thwunks. It's both understated and impressive.

While the U.S. military has been utilizing large, single drones for years now, its future sights seem to be set on the potential for swarms of small, inexpensive, and expendable drones. The LOCUST system here is clearly meant for deployment from the ground or a ship, but both the Air Force and the Navy have been investigating the idea of air-launched drones and, by extension, the future motherships that might carry these little fliers as one of their primary weapons.

How these swarms actually fight, and how they will be armed, is still unknown, but it seems every more likely that little fliers like these are the future of warfare.

The thing is they were ambushed at Semporna, far enough from Lahad Datu that probably the SB unit thought they were just checking out a usual case. Probably the last place they would expect to confront such heavily armed pinoys. The fact that they managed to kill 7 pinoy gunmen in the engagement is simply amazing.

2 policemen did survive though, they hid and fought off pinoy gunmen all night until their backup arrived the next morning.
