Search ongoing for 4 people missing off Sabah

user posted image

A multi-agency search and rescue operation was underway on Wednesday (May 4) for two Spanish tourists, a Chinese national and a Malaysian citizen missing off the coast of Kudat on the northernmost tip of Sabah .

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) spokeswoman Faridah Shuib said preliminary investigations revealed the two Spaniards David Hernandes Gasula, 29, and Marta Miguel, 30, were tourists. They were staying at a chalet belonging to a Chinese national named Tommy Lam in Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, Kudat.

Lam was said to have taken them on a day trip to the island Balambangan on Tuesday before they went missing. MMEA believes the boat is adrift after its engine failed.

As of 1pm Malaysian time on Wednesday, the search area has been expanded from 400 to 750 nautical miles north west of Tanjung Simpang Mengayau.

Lam's family has dispatched three boats to look for the missing four. The Malaysian Navy, the Marine Police and MMEA have all deployed assets, including vessels and a helicopter, for the search.

Philippine militants threaten hostages in new video warning

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

MANILA: Islamic militants in the Philippines issued a fresh warning on Tuesday (May 3) threatening to harm three hostages, just over a week after they beheaded a captive.

The trio - from Canada, Norway and the Philippines - appealed for help from the Philippine and Canadian governments in a video uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday and reported by SITE intelligence group, which monitors jihadist media.

"To the Philippine government: Please stop shooting at us and trying to kill us. These guys are going to do a good job of that," Robert Hall, a Canadian, said in the video. He said the kidnappers had told him to tell his own government "to meet the demand" - though he did not specify what the demand was.

The southern Philippines-based Abu Sayyaf announced last week they had killed a Canadian hostage, retiree John Ridsdel, as an Apr 25 ransom deadline lapsed.

Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad and Marites Flor, Hall's Filipina girlfriend, also pleaded with the two governments. The video showed them sitting on the ground, beneath what appeared to be a coconut plantation, with six gunmen standing behind them.

The Norwegian said that "if the demand is not met we will be executed like our friend John was a few days ago". One of the gunmen then warned Manila to heed the "lesson" of Ridsdel's killing and avoid delays in negotiations.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino has vowed to "neutralise" the gunmen and his government has said it will not negotiate with a group it considers a terrorist organisation.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also said - after announcing Ridsdel's murder - that his government would not negotiate with the kidnappers.

Aquino said the three hostages were being held on the Abu Sayyaf stronghold of Jolo island, more than 1,000 kilometres south of Manila.

Ridsdel and the three were snatched from a resort elsewhere in the southern Philippines in September last year, with the kidnappers demanding millions of dollars in ransom.

On Sunday the gunmen freed 10 Indonesian sailors they had abducted at sea five weeks earlier. But they are also still holding four Malaysian and four other Indonesian sailors, as well as a Dutch birdwatcher abducted in 2012.

8 Bangladeshi men detained under Singapore's ISA for planning terror attacks back home

user posted image

SINGAPORE - Eight Bangladeshi men working in Singapore who were planning to stage terror attacks back home have been detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA), the Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Tuesday (May 3).

The men, aged between 26 and 34, called their group the Islamic State in Bangladesh (ISB) and intended to join terror group ISIS as foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq.

But as it was difficult to travel to the Middle East, they focused on returning to Bangladesh to topple their government through violent means, set up an Islamic State there, and bring it under the self-declared caliphate of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

They were detained last month (April 2016), in the first ISA detentions involving a terror cell of foreign workers.

Late last year, a closed religious study group of 27 radicalised Bangladeshi workers who had a significant amount of extremist material in their possession were arrested under the ISA, and deported. Their deportations were made public in January.

But in the latest case, the ministry said its investigations found that the men had identified possible targets for attack back home at the time of their arrest.

They also had documents on weapons and bombmaking, and raised funds to buy firearms to carry out the attacks[/B in Bangladesh. An undisclosed amount of money has been seized.

The group's ringleader, Rahman Mizanur, 31, was an S-Pass holder in construction who set up ISB as a clandestine group in March this year.

He recruited the other seven, all Work Permit holders employed in the local construction and marine industries.

They are: Mamun Leakot Ali, 29; Sohag Ibrahim, 27; Miah Rubel, 26; Zzaman Daulat, 34; Islam Shariful, 27; Md Jabath Kysar Haje Norul Islam Sowdagar, 30; and Sohel Hawlader Ismail Hawlader, 29.

"ISB poses a security concern to Singapore because of its support for ISIS and its readiness to resort to the use of violence overseas," the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement on the detentions.

"The detained ISB members are still under investigation for their activities in Singapore. Rahman Mizanur has said he would carry out an attack anywhere if he was instructed by ISIS to do so, though there are no specific indications that Singapore had as yet been selected as a target," the ministry added.

Several of those detained may be liable for prosecution for terrorism financing, it said.

The detentions come at a time of mounting concern that ISIS is winning recruits from Bangladesh, which has recently seen radicals carrying out deadly attacks on minorities.

user posted image

The ministry said a document titled We Need For Jihad Fight was recovered from Rahman Mizanur, which contained a list of Bangladeshi government and military officials who could be targeted. It included "media peoples" and "disbelievers".

He also possessed documents on weapons and bomb making, as well as a significant amount of ISIS and Al-Qaeda radical material which he used to recruit ISB members in Singapore from January 2016.

user posted image

"The ISB members planned to recruit other Bangladeshi nationals working in Singapore to grow the group," the ministry added.

As part of the crackdown on ISB, another five Bangladeshi workers were investigated under the ISA. The ministry said investigations showed that they were not involved in ISB.

But they "possessed and/or proliferated jihadi-related materials, or supported the use of armed violence in pursuit of a religious cause".

[B]All five have been repatriated to Bangladesh.

Found on 8 terror detainees: Kill-list, guide for sniper rifle, and bomb-making manual

The ministry said the Singapore Government takes a very serious view of any form of support for terrorism.

"Any person, foreigner or otherwise, who engages in any activity that is inimical to Singapore's national security and racial and religious harmony will be firmly dealt with under the law. In this connection, foreigners should not import their own domestic political agenda into Singapore and carry out activities here in pursuit of such an agenda," it added.

The ministry said anyone who knows or suspects that a person has been radicalised, or is engaging in terrorist activities or propagating extremist teachings, should promptly inform the Internal Security Department on 1800-2626-473 or the police on 999.

Later on Tuesday, Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong and Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs Amrin Amin said the detentions are a reminder that Singapore has to take terrorist threat seriously.

Mr Wong wrote on Facebook that the issue was not about "foreign workers or Islam".

ISA detentions: ISIS' terrorist ideology still a serious threat, says Muis

"It's about a minority of people who have chosen to distort religion, spread their own extremist ideology, and use terror and violence to achieve their goals," he said.

In a Facebook post, Mr Amin said, "The detainees and their likes pose a security concern to Singapore because of their support for ISIS and their readiness to resort to violence.

Though there are no specific indications that Singapore had been selected as a target, one of the detainees has said he would carry out an attack anywhere if he was so instructed by ISIS.

Thank you to our security agencies for their decisive handling! Stay alert, stay united and stay strong! ‪#‎SGSecure‬," he posted.

Anyway, here's the explanation, from Wiki:
QUOTE
The term technical describing such a vehicle originated in Somalia in the early 1990s. Barred from bringing in private security, non-governmental organizations hired local gunmen to protect their personnel, using money defined as "technical assistance grants". Eventually the term broadened to include any vehicle carrying armed men. Technicals have also been referred to as battlewagons, gunwagons, or gunships.

Among irregular armies, often centered on the perceived strength and charisma of warlords, the prestige power of technicals is strong. According to one article, "The Technical is the most significant symbol of power in southern Somalia. It is a small truck with large tripod machine guns mounted on the back. A warlord's power is measured by how many of these vehicles he has." Technicals are not commonly used by well-funded armies that are able to procure purpose-built combat vehicles, because the soft-skinned civilian vehicles that technicals are based on do not offer very good protection to their crew and passengers.
Calling them 'Improvised light fighting vehicle' would also be a good official term.

Tom Clancy Predicted Ship-Killing A-10s

user posted image

QUOTE
In April 2016, the U.S. Air Force deployed four A-10 Warthog attack jets to The Philippines for patrols over the South China Sea
QUOTE
The low- and slow-flying A-10 — the Air Force’s premier tank-killer — might seem like an odd choice for a maritime patrol plane, especially in air space where there’s a good chance of running into supersonic Chinese fighters
QUOTE
But the radar-less A-10 is capable of fighting at sea, provided some other plane does the sensor work. Warthogs gunned enemy patrol boats during the NATO intervention in Libya in 2011. And 27 years earlier in 1984, the late novelist Tom Clancy described A-10s taking on the Soviet navy in his classic technothriller The Hunt for Red October
QUOTE
The Americans intend to send a message — back off. A hundred Air Force fighters fly toward Kirov, seeming to the battlecruiser’s radar operators like an “alpha strike,”
QUOTE
Armed with a full load of depleted-uranium ammunition for their 30-millimeter cannons plus underwing Rockeye cluster bombs, the Warthogs of Linebacker flight fly just 100 feet above the waves in order to stay off Kirov’s radar screens, their part-time pilots observing radio silence to complete their stealthy profiles

World's first air-droppable missile system being developed for Russian Airborne Forces

user posted image

MOSCOW, May 4. /TASS/. The world's first air-droppable air defense missile system is being created for the Russian Airborne Forces on the basis of the BMD-4M combat vehicle, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry told TASS on Wednesday.

"The work is underway on the on the creation of an air-droppable anti-aircraft missile defense system based on the BMD-4M airborne combat vehicle. The experimental design work is codenamed Ptitselov (Fowler)," the source said.

According to him, the system will be parachuted.

The Russian Airborne Forces currently have in service various modifications of the Strela-10 air defense missile system the basic model of which had been made operational in 1976.

The track-mounted Sadovnitsa BMD-4M combat vehicle is a version of the BMD-4 vehicle with a new body, engine, chassis and other units. It is equipped with the Bakhcha-U combat unit, which comprises two guns - one of 100-mm caliber and another - of 30-mm caliber, and a machine gun.

Previously, a Russian Defense Ministry source told TASS that the BMD-4M vehicle, along with the BTR-MDM (Rakushka) armored personnel carrier entered service. According to other previous reports, under the existing contract the Russian Defense Ministry should receive within three years up to 250 of these airborne combat vehicles and armored personnel carriers.

Well, the key word here is 'improvised'. I think we can all agree improvised stuff doesn't often match purpose-built equipment. The better value of them would be availability, reliability and mobility.

As long as the technical is mobile and can carry a working gun, it's still counts as a threat. Furthermore, technical-style warfare is mostly the hit and run light cavalry-style actions where mobility and speed is more valuable than heavy armor.

CHINA PLANS TO DEFEAT AMERICAN LASERS WITH SMOKE

user posted image

QUOTE
According to an article published on China.com, a site that appears to be ultimately owned by the Chinese government, the People’s Liberation Army is looking at using smokescreens to protect against lasers. Smoke on battlefields is usually a tool of concealment, not armor. When it comes to lasers, the simple physics of light means smoke has serious potential as armor.

Last summer, Subrata Ghoshroy of MIT’s Science, Technology and Global Security Working Group wrote in the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists:

Any weapon that relies upon light traveling through the atmosphere runs into the problems of dust, humidity, and fog—features which absorb and scatter the laser energy. In addition, atmospheric distortions such as turbulence can deflect a beam of light. And at the same time that the photons in a laser’s beam must overcome all of these obstacles, they must also stay focused in a tight column and keep advancing forward without diminishing in power. Meanwhile, the user of the laser weapon must account for the movement of the target, the movement of the firing platform, and any decoys, dummies, or multiple war warheads that the enemy throws up.

Lasers as we know them only work in certain weather. This is a problem that can be overcome; before bullet casings became standard, rain could ruin gunpowder and leave riflemen holding strange, ineffective sticks. The bullet casing solution took centuries, and while it’s likely lasers will outwit smoke in less time than that, putting up a smokescreen is a cheap, effective answer to weapons right now. So China’s army is looking into quick ways to put smoke up where they need it. From Popular Mechanics:

The PLA is experimenting with creating smoke in two ways: creating sulfur trioxide smoke through burning materials (spraying oil on a hot diesel engine is one way to do it) or creating an oily fog. The PLA Chemical Corps plans to use a new multiple canister launcher (pictured) to rapidly lay down protective smoke screens for nearby friendly forces.

If smoke beats lasers, and for a few years it certainly might, there’s an even older force that can completely undermine smoke: wind. As futuristic as modern war is, weather still gets a say.

Watch South Korea's First Homemade Tank Strut Its Stuff

QUOTE
A new drone-captured video on YouTube shows off the South Korea's new main battle tank, offering spectacular aerial views of the K-2 "Black Panther" in the field, complete with firing smoke dischargers and wading a river
QUOTE
Although development was completed in 2007, problems with the transmission and engine delayed production. The problem was temporarily solved by sourcing German power packs for the first 100 vehicles, to be replaced with a Korean-made power pack for subsequent production models
QUOTE
The first K-2s entered service in 2014 Roughly four hundred tanks will be built, replacing South Korea's obsolete M48 Patton tanks
QUOTE
The K-2 is roughly comparable to the French LeClerc and the American M1 Abrams. It has the same German-designed 120-millimeter main gun as the Abrams, but with a longer barrel to boost projectile velocity
QUOTE
It reportedly can feed the gun one round every three seconds. The K-2 has a radar autotracker, allowing the main gun to lock onto and follow a moving enemy tank or low-flying aircraft
QUOTE
Another standout capability of the K-2 lies in the Korean Standoff Top Attack Munition (KSTAM) munition. KSTAM is fired from the main gun at long range and, like artillery, can attack targets beyond the line of sight. After it's shot into a target area, KSTAM deploys a parachute and turns on its sensor package, including a millimetric wave radar and infra-red sensor
QUOTE
Once it detects a target, it fires an explosively forged penetrator into the enemy's thin top armor. A weapon system like KSTAM is particularly useful in South Korea's mountainous terrain
QUOTE
The K-2 is smaller than many tanks, weighing a trim 55 tons. It has a peppy horsepower to weight (ton) ratio of 27.2, approximately 20 percent better than a late model Abrams tank

this is what I'm looking for:

LCS = Gowind, progress ada sampai 1/year also I happy mad.gif hopefully faster but sighhhh doh.gif

SGPV = SGPV/LCS is Gowind; it says NGPV aka Kedah class on the chart, if it means adding the Exocets and some kind of SAM like VL MICA that'd be good

Submarine ada tambah? 2 biji like... not enough... 1 in port 1 at sea means essentially 1 available only

LMV = I don't know what this means, hoping for more FAC (M), minesweepers and a survey ship. Patrol boat role I think pushed off to MMEA with their OPV program

MRSS = True MRSS or oversized LPD? I dunno. Hopefully something like a 2-spot heli carrier with few LCMs and significant OOTW equipment rather than a glorified Ro/Ro with 1 helipad

Note it says green water navy, so 5kt ships and underway replen probably still a distant fantasy...
