PlayStation VR: Launching October for $399

With the annual Game Developers Conference in full swing, I’m pleased to give you an exciting update on PlayStation VR. Today, we are announcing that the PlayStation VR headset will launch in October of this year for a suggested retail price of USD $399 / CAD $549.
I got myself a 3D TV and by the time I got my hand on PS4, Sony drop the support for 3D gaming after PS3 doh.gif . Unless one is truly wealthy, better stay clear of all these new gimmicky "new exciting gadgets" until 2nd/3rd generation if it ever survive the 1 generation......

Way too many failure before............. kinect 1 & 2 (Xbox 360 and Xbone), PS Eye & PS Move, 3D gaming (PS3)...... money down the drain.

The irony with virtual reality is that people used to shy away from 3D TV because they have to put on a spectacles (active or passive), but now they doesn't seem to mind about putting a "goggle" that is hundreds time heavier and goofy than a feather weight 3D spectacles.... not to mention the numerous cables connected to the VR goggles..... doh.gif I like new tech, I hope VR can really break away from earlier "new tech gadget" failures curse, finger crossed.

Owh, i called them last year when the blocked it and they said only CC they allowed purchases for gaming sites as they feared some scamming or something like that. I guess they fed me bullshit LOL.

Well, for some people whom periodically upgrade their smartphone to catch up with the latest trend like Samsung flagship or Apple iPhone which costs over RM2,000 nowadays, this USD399 pricing could be quite "affordable" to some brows.gif
The possibility of a truly immersive virtual world is very tempting.....

VR feels kinda lonely to me. And sometime goofy also...

Will it become a thing or not... Dunno yet, but for the entrance price of it sure become a barrier from preventing it becoming mainstream and if it does not becomes mainstream developers will drop the support or development for games of VR pretty fast.

I think VR will definitely survive on the PC, even if not successful it will continue on as a niche gadget.
But on console, since console life cycle is pretty short, an investment on such pricey gadget doesn't seem worth it. That's my logical side of thinking, but deep down inside I want VR!!!! biggrin.gif

Those VR "pawn" will never run on ps, only on the PC. So don't buy the ps VR thinking you can do that. DOA5 is kinda dissapointing, just a upscaled HD version of previous generation graphic, no improvement to the skin texture to make the ladies looks more life like. cool2.gif

I was refering to R3 psn store, but I believe there's a similar sales in R1 store. Not sure if prices is lower in R1 store or not. The sales is for EA games.

That is a bit later than the timeframe we previously stated, and I want to thank everyone for their patience and continued support. PlayStation VR represents a transformative experience in gaming, and we wanted to take the time needed to launch with a broad variety of content and a sufficient supply of hardware. We are beyond excited to deliver to consumers the amazing experience that PS VR offers.

I’m also pleased to reveal the final consumer version of PS VR, including all of the contents that will come in the package.

user posted image

Today more than 230 developers are building content for PlayStation VR, from smaller independent teams to larger studios at the industry’s top publishers. We expect to have more than 50 games available from launch in October 2016 until the end of the year. Of course, the full promise of PlayStation VR will continue to grow over time as talented developers create new experiences and new genres that wouldn’t be possible outside of VR. The future looks bright indeed.

Additionally, The Playroom VR, from our very own Japan Studio, will be available as a free download from PlayStation Store for all PS VR owners at launch. The Playroom VR will include six games that can be enjoyed with friends and family, demonstrating why we believe VR can also be an impactful experience when it’s shared.

With PlayStation VR, the future of gaming is almost here. We’re excited to share more with you as we head into launch later this year.

As written in the blog, for USD$399, you only get the HMD. You will have to purchase two essentials separately:
a. PS4
b. PS Camera
