Got my laptop last Thursday. I bought an Asus A8FM.

Tried to install FC6 but it crashed during installation twice. Then I decided to try Ubuntu 6.10 and I'm happy that I did that. Glad that I did.

Everything that I needed just worked out of the box like graphics, sound control hot keys, wireless hot keys etc. except for the soundcard (AD1986A) and the scrolling on the synaptics mousepad (not detected).

The mousepad was easy to fix but the ALSA drivers for the soundcard still has some problems supporting the internal mic and the audio output is still not working. However, external mic is working and internal speakers are also ok. Looking forward to the next ALSA drivers.

Beryl is looking great and overall, everything that I want to have is here except for wireless which I haven't tested yet.

Specs of my laptop:
T5500 C2D
1.5GB RAM
120GB SATA HDD
DVD-RAM
Intel GMA 950 Gfx
AD1986A soundcard chipset

tried fc6 too on my inspiron 6400,
it installed well, but cant seem to get the ethernet and the wireless working..
even though it has detected it if checked using lspci..

other than that, well, its the ati x1400 card, which cant seem to work as well, has to resort to vga generic driver which means no widescreen support and not being able to use beryl... sighhh

rite now, i'm using back ubuntu 6.06, every device works except for the ati card. maybe i should try ubuntu 6.10 later

me too. but i didnt have much time to play with the wireless setting. the ethernet worked fine here. as for graphics, im using the intel 945GM chipset and need to do some tweakings to get full perfect resolution.

btw, if you are running core duo or c2d machine,fc6 came with a wrong kernel. it wont detect the cpu info/speed correctly. check out the below links for more info :-

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=211941
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=212091

in other word, just upgrade the kernel to the latest version. anyway, ubuntu isnt that bad afterall. good luck.

Some updates on my Asus A8Fm.

The wireless button works out of the box and pressing it on and off turned on and off the wireless modem as well. To get the wireless drivers for the IPW3945abg chipset, you need to download and install "linux-restricted-modules-generic" from the Ubuntu repository. After that, it worked without any problems.

The brightness up and down keys (Fn + F5/F6) did not work. The events for Fn+F5 were captured but no event handlers were found in /etc/acpi/events. The events for Fn+F6 were not captured at all.

I tried Fn+F4 and it was captured and it's supposed to be the Internet hotkey but it didn't work out of the box. Anyway, I won't be using it as I don't think I need it.

So, I changed Fn+F4 to reduce the brightness and Fn+F5 to increase the brightness by writing my own event handlers.

Works like a charm now.

Other ACPI functions worked out of the box like hibernation, suspend, reduce brightness automatically when battery is used & automatically turning off backlight when the lid is closed.

Built-in camera needed the SPCA (I think) drivers and worked after that.

Sound still has some problems and I'm waiting for the next Alsa upgrade.

All-in-all, I'm very pleased with the Asus + Ubuntu 6.10. Exceeded my expectations. I was prepared for lots of debugging and kernel recompilations.

I haven't been in the Linux loop for sometime but how come the newer distro's don't work on low spec machines anymore.

I got this old P1 machine and I don't know what to do with it, its still in pretty okay condition just that Windows 98 was corrupted beyond repair and I'm looking for a replacement OS now.

Anywhere to find older distro's which flies when run on 286/386/486? The ones with minimal GUI?
I'm just going to convert it to a messanging/skype/internet browser kioks.
