easy guys
what u guys can do to make sure all the hardwares comply or not is by running Ubuntu or any distros using LiveCD.
If all ok then u can proceed for installation

ASUS X42J (a.k.a ASUS K24JR)
Intel Core i7 740QM @ 1.73GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 1GB
HDD 500GB

Running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

The rest are pretty standard stuff

Notes for owners of this laptop!

1. What works - Everything except for touchpad disabling/enabling, maybe I forgot to manually activate something

2. What doesn't
*Display - ATI drivers will have to use ATI's driver, not from repo, and do NOT use newer kernel other than the one Ubuntu came with else the driver won't work.
*Sound - speaker works but for redirecting audio to headphones, upgrade ALSA to 1.0.23 manually via a script that can be acquired HERE. Follow instructions and reboot, voila you're done thumbup.gif

-- UPDATE: I don't know but somehow 2.6.37 kernels solved my problem. Same with sound, so everything's good as done o_o;;

The free laptop provided by streamyx, HP Mini 110. Installed with opensuse 11.3 gnome, everything just fine and working except for it's broadcom wireless can't detect any wireless, however downloading the correct firmware from packman resolved the wireless issue. Speed wise, you won't want to use the win 7 starter anymore!

I just tried using ubuntu 10.10 desktop version on my old acer laptop.

spec:
Acer travelmate 4102WLMi
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 740 (1.73GHz, 2MB Cache, 533MHz FSB)
Intel® 915PM Express chipset
15.4" WXGA colour LCD, supporting 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and dual display via Acer GridVista
ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X700 with 64MB of external DDR video RAM support DirectX 9.0
60GB HDD
1GB DDR2 RAM (upgraded)
Integrated 56Kbps modem & 10/100 Mbps LAN
Integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
Acer SignalUp wireless technology support
DVD-Dual double layer drive
Integrated Bluetooth

so far, I haven't seen any hardware compatibility issue, the sound, wifi, touchpad, bluetooth, even some of the functions keys are working fine.

Installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Asus K40IN. All is well, all is well. The only problem I face is the ugly resolution of plymouth screen right after I install propriety driver and reboot. But it is solved now.

Depending on what the specs are, but first you'll have to make sure you can boot the LiveCD or the LiveUSB. Else it's going to be a tough time trying to install.

But if you can get a live session running from either two then I suggest you do a test drive and test what works and what doesn't.

Desktop: Windows 7 / Debian Sid (dual boot). I mainly use Windows 7 for gaming.

Netbook (Toshiba NB205): Crunchbang linux/Windows 7 (dual boot). Mainly use #! because it's lightweight in term of resource usage.

MSI U100Plus + 2GB RAM + Ubuntu 10.10 on latest kernel 2.6.35-28-generic after update.

Everything runs great out of the box, with WIFI, Bluetooth and all Fn keys includes my TURBO switch for this model when on AC power.

And just as a side note for people update to the very last update, which might cause problems to SKYPE fail in loading, just delete the following 2 files and load skype again and it should work.

~/.Skype/shared.lck
~/.Skype/shared.xml
